Witch Hunters WIP (Sisters of Battle)

Recommended Posts

So...Do you ever wake up one morning and feel some burning passion in your heart? Like you know where you should be and what you should be doing? That you've finally got that one unique idea that's going to set you apart from the rest of the pack? That's how I felt a week ago, and so today, I decided I would bring the good word to the people.

So I joined this website, which I've often heard of (I've been on TheWaaaaagh and Talkbloodbowl for many years) and I was just through screwing up that math problem, and having to retype those letters a bunch of times, when I got to this section of the forums....Top post "My Own Multipart Sisters Kit, WiP." Looking though said post I found that they were pretty damn cool. But I felt like somehow the Idea I woke up with "Make a multipart Sister of Battle Army, hurt Ultramarines." Was now half way done with half of itself, by someone else... I feel less driven by passion, but no less sure of what I am going to do for my next 40k army.

I would like to say Hello to everyone out there I will be interacting with over this long and painful road. And I would also like to say that I am sorry for bitting some of Metal Apostle's thunder. His sisters are looking totally cool. And I will try my best to help him if he doesn't kick my face off. And, just to be clear: I will be making my SOBs from all putty, although I really like the approach Metal Apostle had to using the eldar gaurdians, I think when I first conceived my grand scheme I thought that if I was going to start with a GW model for a base, I would use them.

My Project Goals are:

1- Make Slimer, more "Ladyish" sisters. (Try hard not to give them stalkings and cleevage)

2- Use whatever means nessecary to make the basic models I make into multiple models

3- Have a 2,000 pts. army completed with these models, but with additional HQ models and other units

4-DON'T TAKE REPENTIA

5-DON'T TAKE PENITENT ENGINES

6-DON'T TAKE REPENTIA!!

7-Have fun, learn something about sculpting, and why repentia suck

8- Hurt Ultramarines

With that said, I would now like to get the first part of the army. CONCEPTUAL ARTWORK! And Comics about Inquisitors... You know, you can't have enough of either.

http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs50/i/2009/316/e/f/Adepta_Sorotitas_Concept_Art_by_GinoCoolowski.jpg

Here are some basic drawings of the battle sisters that I did, I plan to have full squads of 10, made from the 4 basic "Poses" which will be defined by the orientation of their tabards. So:

Regular (Just over the groin and butt),

Half Tuck (Over one leg and half the butt),

None (No tabard...BUTT!),

Full (Tabard covers most of the sisters torsoe, flap over groin and BUTT!).

Now that you see what I'm thinking of, and that I have a 5th graders mentality about "ladyparts" I would like to note the hairstyles. I fully feel that any sister model that GW makes right now, that isn't wearing a helmet has an aweful hair cut and a horse face. With that being said, I am working on different dos for the girls to have. I like the buzzcut a lot.

Since every army needs a backstory, and I didn't choose one who's backstory is written in a book for you (Like ultramarines) I will be trying to relay some of the details of the story in crudely drawn comics....But see, unlike most 40k personal army backgrounds that are boring and center around sacred groves and whatever. My comics will be funny (ok I will say they are at least). Like this one, depicting the army's inquisitor lord:

http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs51/i/2009/310/2/8/Inquisitorial_Responsibility_by_GinoCoolowski.jpg

Yes, there will be more sardonic opinions I have about the use of MANY things in 40k as time goes on. And by the end of the week I will have pictures of the models in progress!

I hope you don't kill me! :D

Will be watching with interest, good luck!

The cartoon made me smile ;)

It's such a shame Repentia are so weak in the Codex; I was lucky enough to be given a pile of White Dwarf and Citadel back issues, and one of them had the original article where Repentias were first defined; the sketches showed a Tank-Girl lookalike; Scout-style armour, badges and insignia ripped off, hair shaved (badly); armed with a big gun and CCW, operating as an independent character, her stats and special rules were that of a shamed samurai-type, fearless and determined to prove her worth and to earn her re-admission. The short story in the article had a squad of Guard, pinned and hopeless, when this nutty chick jumped over them, all they heard was gunfire and screams of dying xenos, then silence...

Awesome, I hope that if they ever do a new Codex for Sisters/Hunters, they turn the Reps back into these 'nothing-to-lose' psychos!

Hey there Kid Famous,

Welcome to the board!

Don't worry, no killing plans have been made as far as i'm aware :P. I'm glad you like my work and i hope it drives your project further. Have a look also at Terrible Trygon's sisters, he's the one who put the idea into my head. Hopefully the three of us can throw ideas back and forth and each come up with our own unique solutions to getting some great SoB armies happening.

The sketches are great, will be keen to see how this plays out.

Show us some models soon!

ps. hit me up for some discussion if you want to think through some design issues, i'd be very interested in hearing other ideas on custom sisters ;)

I really think that it is about time that GW got off their Ultramarine coddling arses and did a set of plastic resculpted sisters... I strongly believe that they would be quite popular.

And I think this is the appropriate time to submit vol. 1 of my army's backstory, starring: Inquisitor Xaenidella De Croix Fel Crossbow:

Enjoy

I am looking forward to how this turns out. I have been interested in creating armies for all three Ordos but the current Sisters miniatures are not that appealing to me particularly the limited poses. At least you can DIY Grey Knights (PA & TDA) by kitbashing SM (& possible consecrated CSM) bitz.

Well it took a BIT longer to get a real camera than I thought, but a big help came when a friend of mine remembered to bring his to work for me to borrow. Os Here's the first shots of the Fist Sister pose, and the first shoulder pads and head. And some comparative shots of the old minis- and my WIP sculpts. Without further adeu

This pose is the first of 4 for the sisters, it's a very standard non-dynamic pose. Which is what set's it apart from many 40k models lol. I am using it as a "test drive" on doing all the little nooks and cranies of the sisters armor and tabards.

"I" is for infuriating to sculpt, and not even on the right sized shoulder pad, lol. again I think it looked ok.

This is the first head I made, I wanted there to be an eyepatch on a sister, and I so I made this first one it, just so if I didn't like the head, I could keep this one for later to attach to a finished sister. I like her hair alot

I was able to gather an old sister from a helpful chap down at the local gaming den. It's even ....almost painted like the color scheme I wanted. Thanks to him. But, I just brought her in so you could see where things are changing!

INPUT! INncouragement! And IN-....um hating me appreciated!

its a nice start and the sculpting looks good as far as i can see but i do have a couple of concerns. Now i am in no way a great sculptor so please feel free to ignore my comments if you think i am wrong but heres my gut feeling on this.

the biggest thing for me is that the stomach area is far too long making her seem really out of proportion. just from looking at it i would say you could get away with taking nearly half of the waist area away to improve the proportions a bit.

also the legs seem too straight, i think there should be some slight flexing in the knees.

lastly, and it may just be the photos, it looks like the face is too far up her head... the eyes should start around halfway down her head so that there is room for a forehead and then a hairline. in the pictures it looks liek you have centred her face on the head and the forehead and hairline looks cramped. as i said it may just be the pictures but if it isn't its something you should definately think about next time.

all in all an extremely promising start and i look forward to seeing her complete.

I think whats misleading is the top of the corset which is positioned high, I think that if I would change anything it wouldn't be the length of the mid-section, but the position of the breast. just shunt them down a little, and re sculpt the top of the corset. As for the face, well....I think it is big. I think I will try making the head smaller then seeing what might need to be taken out of her guts. I think the over all "weight" of the body feels right though.

@cathar the great: The legs were originally a bit longer, and she was just too tall, I think that might be why the head and the abdomen are still a big too big, I will probably incise a small area of her middle. Or as I said before move the breasts down....I think that if she was a bit shorter it wouldn't hurt, considering her current height.

So yes, thanks for the help so far.

Hello everyone! I fixed the first posed sister. and I am burning right through to the second of the regular sisters poses. I am no running into some complications with the attachment of arms and shoulder pads, but I am going to deal with that after the third and possibly 4th poses for regular sisters are done.

Sister Alpha

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/alpha1front.jpg'

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/alpha1top.jpg

This is the first sister you saw, with her hips only accounted for once! :)

Sister Beta

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/betaback.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/betafront.jpg

This sister has a different corset and "cowl" (neck gaurd?) Than Alpha sister, but I think this one came out really well. And since It only took 2 days to get this far It's even better.

On both of the poses so far, I need to finish the feet and smooth out some final details, but they are basically done. Pose three is comming up.

Oh and here's a new head, since the other one was way too strange.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/betahead.jpg

This one is very to the point. But it works, hair needs some tweeeking.

:P More incoming! Soon!

Nice speed! you're powering through this! (so far i've posted ZERO assembled sisters in 5 months :o... coming soon)

The second head and proportions are a lot better than your first, but the stomache still seems a little long.

I'd recommend some guitar string (i use .50's but you might want thinner for your scale) for the tubing? It will give a lot more 'roundness' consistancy.

ok so I started work on new heads, finishing up some loose ends on the first two poses, like betas breasts. And I started a third pose. and got to work on arming these sisters.

I was thinking that i needed arms before guns, but I don't know how I would know where to put thier hands if there was nothing for them to hold.

The current marine bolters are really really really big on these sisters, so I took a second gen marine bolter, cut it in half length wise, and trimmed of some parts. Then I used that as a base for my sisters bolters. I basically just stuck on details onto the big box that was left.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/sorobolters1.jpg

I need to trim them up a bit and finish the clips, but they are the right size at least. The flamer in that picture was an awesome find from the new necromunda weapons sprew, it's the perfect size for a sister. The green legs are the third pose getting ready for detail and a torsoe.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/gammabeta.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/betaalpha.jpg

You may notice that beta is modeling a new helmet, well it's in the first stages but it's looking ok.

I know that I will have to go back and put necks and neck joints on all the heads and bodies.

:D

Oh my I should have just held the update earlier today until now, but hey. A bump is a bump, and I didn't expect to get so much done.

First off: Gamma is now a pair of feet away from being basically done.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/gammafront.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/gammaside.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/gammaback.jpg

I have been going back and adding details to the rest of the poses, skulls, wings ect. just so they aren't boring. I'm just worried that my caster will tell me to shave them off, because of his casting process. so I'm trying to save all my purity seal/skull/fluer/wings/bones/eyepatch sculpting fury for after he oks what's happening. Personally the armor is pretty stark and featureless right now, but that's ok. Sculpting detail once, is not the same as painting it 100 times. lol

Here's some heads that are getting done. you have seen them before, but they look a bit better now.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/alphahead.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/betahead2.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/gammahead.jpg

The third head is new, I'm liking it so far. Got to get more of "my" kind of hairstyles on these girls. The helmet is going well. Other than I don't know how many of my sisters are even going to wear them. :P

Oh, and here's a stupid doodle i did of my inquisitor, I was upset she didn't have a model coming up, but sisters come first.

I Also drew a few more comics, which I will put up at some point.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/creedo.jpg

Call 'em as you see 'em. ;)

Your going fast, but I think your going too fast. This might be coming from the James May of sculpting, but if you slowed down a little, you could sort out the proportions and do a bit of finishing work. I lot of sanding and filing will help these models a lot, as the plating is a bit rough. The bolters especially need a lot of file work.

Besides that, your going along at a good pace. Though, I would suggest just making one suit, casting that one suit, splitting the casted suits into parts, converting the parts, and then casting the converted parts. However, it might be a bit late for this, since you already have most of the variants done, but the looks of it.

And I will soon be starting on a Lady Inquisitor myself. She will based off the GW Witch Hunter Inquisitor, because she has a darling bow on her bottom. Though, I think after the conversion work, she'd be going a completely different direction to yours. For one, she will have a pipe and a walking cane instead of a eye patch and shotgun...

not a fan of the overly massive breasts, firstly because proportions give elegance... and SoB are a nice opportunity to have a bit of elegance in a 40k army rather than butch/killy stuff. secondly because 'MASSIVE TITS!' is a bit, i dunno... teenage cringeworthy. some nice sculpting though even if it's not my style. best of luck.

Whilst I agree that they are too big, I'd go easy on him for that. Simply because he is doing Fantasy Female Battle Sisters, Metal Apostle is doing Current Design Battle Sisters and I am doing Realistic, Butch Battle Sisters. Don't want his sisters to look a little too much like Apostles, or (somehow) like mine.

Though curves over large breasts would indeed go better with his plan.
