Witch Hunters WIP (Sisters of Battle)

Recommended Posts

not a fan of the overly massive breasts, firstly because proportions give elegance... and SoB are a nice opportunity to have a bit of elegance in a 40k army rather than butch/killy stuff. secondly because 'MASSIVE TITS!' is a bit, i dunno... teenage cringeworthy. some nice sculpting though even if it's not my style. best of luck.

I will agree with you on the third one, her breasts are out of control. But Trigon is right, I am not trying to make exact replicas of GWs sisters of battle, trigon is also not trying to make GWs sisters, although his are in a completely different artistic direction than mine are.

"proportions give elegance... and SoB are a nice opportunity to have a bit of elegance in a 40k army rather than butch/killy stuff."

Oh, I take it you haven't seen Games Workshop's official sisters models then? :P

Because they are metapausal "women" with bowl-cuts, holding giant bricks in front of their formless "Quasi-human" bodies.

" secondly because 'MASSIVE TITS!' is a bit, i dunno... teenage cringeworthy."

I can agree with this, especially on the third pose. Wires got crossed and things got rediculous. BUT! As I said before I am trying to make something that's a far cry from gw's models, the current sisters are shaped like a brick. Bricks aren't at all feminine. My sculpts, yes are "exaggerated" in their hips, and breasts, but that's because things that are shaped like an "8" or an "hourglass" are feminine. When the model is done and you are viewing it from a distance (Not like alpha centauri, but like from a standing position looking down onto a table-top) I want their shape to be recognizable, because when completed they will have massive shoulder pads (Not feminine) and big bulky brick guns. If the form is "A Bit Too Much" now, when arms and shoulder pads and guns are crossing it all up, it's still going to come through. This isn't to say that I'm going to be leaving cleevage showing through, or give them stockings and g-strings, and it also doesn't mean I am making them this shape out of some sick perversion.

This whole argument harkens back to when I was working on these minis for impact and everyone at first was like "Oh ma god her tits are big, jeeze you should change them" so I made them resonable, modest, ect. When the model was completed the creative designer for impact e-mailed me saying "I really like the fig, but I'm not too sure about the whole "low slung b-cup" thing she's got going on, maybe you could redo her bust?"

Obviously it's a style issue, but I think most people respond to the "Comic book, shoulder mounted torpedo breast" than anything reasonable when it comes to fantasy art, comic books, or minis. It's kind of a shame that i can't just make a normally shaped person, with normally shaped features, and call it a day. Because on this scale there is so much to think about, like can you see the detail? What's the sillouette convey? Can you tell what it is? Why did you put the sword above his head and have him pointing? It's complicated, and I am thankful for all the pointers, "look out sirs" and greivences, because they make me more aware of things, and make me a better "Artist." (Artist appears in quotes because I have no degree yet).

Ok this has gone on for a long time, so let me just state my position on the figure of my figures with this quote from an awesome movie:

"All right, let's show 'em what we got, guys! Get out there on the ice and let 'em know you're there. Get that f***in' stick in their side. Let 'em know you're there! Get that lumber in his teeth. Let 'em know you're there!" -Slapshot

Impact Miniatures is a company that makes "blood bowl" -esk minis for their own version of Fantasy Football, called Elfball. It's a pretty cool company, with lots of different teams that GW doesn't have. There are many similar sites that make "blood bowl" figures, without actually coming out and saying that. Like Shadowforge or Philsfigs or Impact and others.

Ah. Impact with a Miniatures at the end. I know of their work. Any chance of seeing the sister you showed the dude?

I didn't want to say it, but the mini I made was a "Dark Elf Blitzer." Yeah... it's kind of sad, but I play Dark Elves in Blood Bowl, I'll probably be ousted from this forum soon.

Here are some pictures, be gentle.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/blitzbust2.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/blitzbust3.jpg

The blitzer and the runner were like the 3rd thing I've ever made from scratch, before that I did an ork nob, and a couple human blood bowl figs.

-_-

Wow those pictures are really bad.

To be fair, that is a completely different armour style to the battle sisters. It might still worth testing out a model with more proportionately sized breasts. And looking at the model you have there, I'd go with your opinion on personal projects such as this. Impact Miniatures is one of those companies that models 'adult movie star' build for most of their female models. When it comes to making more seriously themed models, I'd trust your own idea on proportions. Because that dark elf is perfect for the most of it.

Updating time again! Woo woo!

I did a lot of going back, scraping, filling, smiling, head making and rigging of tubes.

A lot of it was tedious, but it has paid off ;)

I have a few new heads to add to the pile, getting them to connect to the bodies is the next stage (just let me have my victory over these models)

Here they are! They aren't complete yet, like not having all their hair or necks, but it's ok.

This is the starts of the Cerberus Pattern Helmet (yes I made that up). It's a bit rounder than the current helmets...let's see where it goes.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/cerberus.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/cerberus2.jpg

This is the "lazy hawk" head, as I stated before I was trying not to make a sister have a mohawk, but yeah I'm failing. It's going to be down, and sort of across her head, not fully up. You can see the face is done and the shaved hair is on her head.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/hawkgirl1.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/hawkgirl2.jpg

This next head is pretty cool, she's kind of got the "Veteran" look going on, I'm not sure what kind of hair she'll have, but it will have to hide that tube that goes nowhere :P

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/scareye2.jpg

After the heads we have the bodies again, This time I have refabricated thier tubes with real wires from guitars at Metal's request. It's pretty cool actually. I put the junction apparatus over the tube in the front, which will probably be covered by a skull as it is on gamma, or by some bigger armor plate?

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/betaside.jpg

those green legs need to go lol

Gamma

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/gammaside2.jpg

They all have some corrections done on them, like gaps filled, and some filing done, I wish I could work on their feet more, but I can't cut the wires into the cork until they are done. I also set out a start for the power packs, which look cool, but are mostly made of salvaged parts. (since I need three to be cast).

I also found a new base for the bolters, since the bolters I showed are WAY too big, which I don't know how I didn't notice before. lol.

The leg to body proportions are a lot better, and the waistline also seems more realistic but i can't say i'm a fan of the hooters...

Oh, and i like the way the robes are just blowing across the models. Dynamic without some bizzare mid-combat pose. :P

Ok, update time. this time I have lots of pictures. But I also have some good/bad news. After taking a look at the quality of the first pose... I felt that it just wasn't the sculpting quality that I could and did produce on the other sculpts. Also I felt that the proportions were getting kind of out of hand in some places (Many of them ankles). So I decided to cut these girls down to size. What does this mean? Well you can take a look.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/fronta.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/backa.jpg

You can see these two, you can see the original sister with the ablative armored corset is still intact. She's standing next to the 3rd pose The "Half Tuck."

As you can see the "Half Tuck" girl has had some serious changes to her pose, and to her proportions. But they are all for the better. The "Half Tuck" looks a lot more like she's standing and strenuously firing a machine gun or something similarly heavy and fully automatic.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/frontb.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/backb.jpg

These poses you have NOT scene yet, other than bits and pieces of them making up the First Sister I made. The first sister I made was just getting to be too...um pasty and bubbly and bumpy. Yes I WILL be filing them all a bit when I'm done, but it was just too many layers and too much oil and scraps coming off her. So as it is deemed fit by her order she was chopped into chunky bits, and those bits were used to make a better new version of herself. standing in a much more feminine pose which you can see on the LEFT in the first picture. Now, now, I know a lot of people didn't like the "Standing completely still with my feet apart listening to Enya on my helmet's stereo" pose. But I think that it can be dramatic and stirring if given the right amount of cloth. Enter the new girl on the RIGHT in the first picture. although still in the blob-ey phase I will tell you her loincloth will extend to the rebreather tubes on her chest...a sort of Dark Angels-y kind of tabard leaving some of the chest exposed on the sides. Also a note on the 4th pose, she looks a bit short, but i made the dip in her chest extra deep so I could make the heads work, and the shoulders are going to be up a little bit more once I put the face gaurd/tubes area on.

Personally it was hard to cut apart that first sister, and much of the third, and to add a 4th pose. I had started on putting arms on these ladies, but I am now going back to re-establish some forms and make everything smoother. I didn't realize until today (when I made me 1500 1750 and 2000 pts army lists) that I will be fielding upwards of 70 sisters of battle. So they that's why i wanted 1 more pose in there, I also feel like if I'm going to invest all this time in making these poses and arms and guns and everything and then casting them, then assembling and painting 100 of them, I don't want them to look crappy. Because it will make the painting and playing part sort of sad for me. Because everyone at the local gaming store will ask to see my "sisters of battle that are so much better than the GW models" and when I show them my half done 3 poses across 100 girls they will probably:

1-Point

2-Inhale

3-Laugh Continuously

4-Repeat 3 until I cry.

So Other than mutilating small models of women, I also made some HEADway on the sisters heads... get it? Headway? Stop booing me.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/mask2.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/mask1.jpg

Every time I see a girl with a flame thrower and a sweet gas mask/rebreather I will be really happy I included this head.

I think the hair might need some evening but it turned out really well. Also her eye ball is missing.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/hawk1.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/hawk2.jpg

Because I am not playing an Eldar army with 100 dire avengers, or trolls slayers, goliaths as catachans, or any other "All Mohawk" army I have to fit them in where I can. This one is laying very still across this Sister's head. shhh she'll never know.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/hair1.jpg

The bread and butter 60's curly cut. It's good but it's boring. Lol

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/eye1.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/eye2.jpg

she may have lost that eye in a tragic gardening accident, but the bionic eye still makes her look pretty BA!

Well I'm sorry for the update delay. but It will actually be continuing until Friday. But I have the 4 poses and 6 heads done, and I have started to put arms together for the lil' gals. The armor detail is looking very nice.

In the mean time I just scanned in the 9 new pages of the comic I'm making about my inquisitor and her comical adventures....it's kind of a fanfiction/satire/background to my army. The first 2 comics are at the head of this thread. Here's part 3

Enjoy

:(

(No one seems to get the joke about Digital Weapons, the first glove has holes that contain tiny guns. The next glove has a small knife strapped to it. Digital and Analog? Funny? ok fine)

Yeah, the armoury really falls flat on it's face in offensive equipment. Not that I worry about that for my Inquisitor. Just made her a psychic power house and give her tons of dudes to do her bidding. And getting people killed whilst you sit back being brooding and scary is what Witch Hunter Inquisitors are all about.

Well this time I've got a lot of work done. The bodies are almost done. And I've started the arms. The helmet is getting close to completion. Although it's very hard. lol Well without further delay...

girl one (who was last seen on the chopping block)

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/1front.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/1back.jpg

I really like her "full" tabard, and the fact that it doesn't loop around her shoulders will be disguised by the shoulder pads, if not I will have it come all the way up.

girl 2 (too cool for school)

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/2front.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/2back.jpg

She's got a flashy new belt. That doesn't have a buckle, but I like doing buckles. I also love her neck grill area aquila that I might not give her tubes, or maybe try to put the tubes only on the side.

girl 3, (Half tuck)

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/3front.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/3back.jpg

She is easily the most obnoxious pose. I am always thinking about cutting this one out or starting it again. But I think with the belts and in the picture it looks a whole lot nicer.

girl 4 (the new girl)

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/4front.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/4back.jpg

this is the completely new pose that's just like the old pose 1. I really like that corset's studs, very second gen. Her tabard is just started but cloth is pretty easy. She's a bit behind the others because she was made only a week ago.

This helmet is so annoying

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/helmate.jpg

It's ok, but not anything worthwhile yet.

Shooting Bolter arm 1

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/arm.jpg

This is the first arm, which will pair with another arm to be the basic "Im holding and possibly firing a bolter."

I'm actually planning on ending the sleeves in a ball so I can put the socket on the chest.

This will allow for 2 things:

1- I can use this basic set of 2 arms to make way more poses that just a flat socketed arm

2- The round lip of the socket will look just like the round hole in the sisters chest armor where their arms come out, and and the sleeves will continue up into that socket, then the even further disguise the joint the shoulder pad will sit right on top. Completely masking the joint from both directions. Even though you'll usually only see the top down view.

I got bored today and started painting this sister, I got the tabard done and it looked nice, so I snapped a pic

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/SOBS/tabard.jpg

I am really feeling sick lately, and I have school finals coming up next week. so this will probably be the last update for at least a week. Thanks for your support, hatred, glee.

Hey Kid Famous,

I'm liking the designs on these armour styles, and i like the pose for the flowing tabard sister (girl 3). Also a big fan of the stance of girl 2 :Elite:

With absolutly no offense intended, i'd recommend you to take the sculpting a bit slower. It is much easier to press the shapes you need and get neater if you solidify your armature first. I say this in response to the difficulty in helmet sculpting. How i did mine, and even faces (though for my finals i used hasselfree heads), was to start with a blob about 75 or 80% of the final volume, and only make the important indents (eye sockets and mouth) in it. Wait for it to dry!! after that you have something to press your putty against when you start applying details (by details i mean everything tht isnt the skeleton really). Especially with helmet sculpting you want very smooth, even surfaces, so take each panel of your helmet and sculpt it one at a time, if not even 2 parts. Eg. Sculpt the edge of the plate. Wait for it to cure, then fill the rest of the plate by smoothing. With that much sculpting, a bit of patience goes a very long way :Troops:

Really hope you dont take the above the wrong way, since i am very keen on seeing how this project progresses.

Also, what are you planning for guns? You've mentioned that you think the current bolters seem too big, but i'm interested in what you're thinking of using.

Cheers

  • 4 weeks later...

25 days later, and I can't say I'm happy with how long it to get back to working on my little sisters. I had a crap ton of school work to do right before christmas. Then you know, christmas jumped up. Then there was a TF2 Update with a contest I had to make an entry for... But enough excuses, time for ACTION! Or...Time for pictures depicting figures whose existence indicates a level of ACTION!

Note: The Pictures and the Models don't move...

Ok where were we before? Ah, yes. A few changes have occurred in the meantime. First: I realized that February is fast approaching and that when the escalation league begins. So I've basically got to get my ass in gear. Luckily, I have decided to cut a pose out of the mix (until a later date), and I've decided to grab up a few heads and guns from different (NECROMUNDA LADIES) sources.

The few additional heads are from eschers.

(Not pictured) The guns are coming from necromunda lasguns and autoguns which will be converted a bit to look like bolters. Since old sisters guns are too big, and new bolters are HUGE.

So here we go!

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/tabard2.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/tabard1.jpg

This sister is done, her body really can't sustain anymore work without me putting details that will make the model too specific and difficult to cast. I will be adding straps and purity seals to these girls, but it will be after they are cast up. So I will be making a conversion of a model I made... wierd.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/halftuck2.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/halftuck1.jpg

This sister needs the most work out of the three, but as the most frustrating pose it's come a LONG way. that skull kneepad could use some work Maybe?

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/eagle2.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/eagle1.jpg

This pose is really closing up nicely I like the face/neck gaurd eagle. I think the main concern I have with this one and the rest is getting the other pieces to fit on, I've started on arms and backpacks and guns and heads, but the biggest issue is obviously going to be the shoulder pads. They will have to connect to....nothing...basically either be pegged to the shoulders or just be haphazardly glued to the neck arm area, but again...I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

HEADS!

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/head2.jpg

I made this one, and a lot of others...it's cool!

Here are the metal escher heads i clipped and are working on reconstituting thier hair.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/head1.jpg

THe final part of this update will deal with color scheme choosing, and guess what! You get to help, although you should be making suggestions and comments for the rest of this stuff too...

;)

Color Scheme 1:

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/color1.jpg

Color Scheme 2 AND 1:

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/color2.jpg

I'm kind of partial to these two colors, and I'm not married to either allotment of them that the old sisters allow, obviously my sisters will have more armored areas and less tabards, so painting one of them will be a different look, but I thought it might help to paint these two old ones and give them the eye. The only hinging factor right now is painting the bleached bone is harder than painting the red.

Also, very strangely the number of rhinos and immolators i have SOARED, I found two from a friend at the game store, and got 2 more from unscrupulous dealers. I have 4 now, which is either way to much or just enough for 800-1,500.

Pleeeze, comments and concerns I would love to hear, also "vote" for your favorite of the two mirrored color schemes..i know it's not interesting.

 :)

Well it's kind of sad to see a back to back post on myself, but everyone is getting their own armies up and running. So that's fine.

Either way my sisters are now traversing perils more challenging than any they will face on the table top. They were handed off to my friend and local

"caster" Big Mike. He's stated that as long as I get 6 of his thunder wolf boys sculpted by saturday, he'll have the first batch of sisters for me on the same day this week. But hastily before I sent them off I took some quick pics of the minis.

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/spure1.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/spure2.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/spure3.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/spure4.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/spure5.jpg

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd126/ginocoolowski/spure6.jpg

The bolters came out pretty cool, and the arms and shoulder pads worked out better than I expected (as I expected them to be balls out hard).

With the main bite taken out of the sisters pie I am now focusing on starting my inquisitor and cannoness. Obviously the inquisitor will resemble the one in the comics, but I have only one idea for my cannoness and that's that she should have a big axe. \

So tell me what you think...if anything. <_<

Just stumbled upon this thread, and I had to save it for the last, in order to enjoy the most. I liked the pictures at the front: the comic was simple, yet funny. Nice job on the conversions, the sisters are taking shape as the project goes along. I'm sorry to hear you haven't gotten many responses so far: hope this can amend for it B)

not a fan of the overly massive breasts, firstly because proportions give elegance... and SoB are a nice opportunity to have a bit of elegance in a 40k army rather than butch/killy stuff. secondly because 'MASSIVE TITS!' is a bit, i dunno... teenage cringeworthy. some nice sculpting though even if it's not my style. best of luck.

i think you need to go a bit easier on the guy(or girl), firstly because he(/she) is doing a good job on these, secondly because drawing let alone SCULPTING womens breast is very very difficult. besides why shouldn't there be some large breasted women in the future, we have them now (unless of course your the type of nerd whose never seen a woman).

The reason why large breasts do not make sense on Sister of Battle power armour is because the Sisters of Battle are veteran soldiers. Though their hellish training regimes they wouldn't have very large breasts at all. And really, trolling the guy at the end there was unnecessary.

Anyways, Kid, I can't say I am terribly convinced by these latest sculpts. They look a bit rushed. You really need to slow down a bit with your sculpting. You'll ruin the end result if you go too fast.

Your last work of 2009 was pretty good, however. The detailing and heads were pretty nifty looking.

Thanks for the your interest. ;)

I have already addressed the "Zomg Breasts" issue. and It's nothing that looks bad now.

As for "rushing" these models... Trigon I have no inclination as to what you mean by rushing?

It's not like I Finished the bodies, the shoulder pads and the spreues in one 2 Nights...

That would be.... haha.

Yeah. I agree. But I did make these from scratch, and when they come back in resin, I'm still going to do some work on each one

to try to even out flash, and add a bit more detail.

Also It's hard to see how a lot of the detail came out.

SO we'll have to wait for paint and resins.

I actually started my cannoness today, I'm going a lot slower with her.

Twistedthunder

I tell people this all the time

"You think dating a girl is hard, try sculpting one."

I was going to put up some comics today, even if I dpn't get time to color them.

Well, it depends what kind of "Cost" you mean.

Like I said, I don't know how much the equipment costs as I don't own it. (I also don't know what the hell it even is)

But From what Big Mike told me, He makes rubber casts of the figures/sprues

Then He makes resin casts of the rubber molds.

The resin and the rubber (as he told me) comes in $40 dollar incriments for 28 0z. or so.

So adding that to the cost of the pressure widgets and fings.

A start up would be like $300 or more?

Just, look at this site: http://www.alumilite.com/

It's got all the stuff you need, and even has some pictures of minis in their "Applications" section.

As far as cost to Me, Big Mike let's me pay him in gratuitous sculpting jobs, bitz and other such brick a brack.

Such as currently, he's got me turning blood crushers of khorne into thunder wolf calvary. It sucks.

But, now that the sisters are done it's going fast. Plus, now he's got to move his ass if he's going to get my sisters out before FEB. (the league start date)
