When did you come to the Wolves?

Started playing 40k 20 years ago. Started collecting and playing Space Wolves specifically when they finally got unique rules and models with release of White dwarf 156 and 157 (December 1992 and January 1993). I was very pleased when the Space Wolves codex was released as the very first codex for 2nd Edition (yes, even before Codex Ultramarines) in May 1994 (or thereabouts).

Valerian

I started playing 6 years ago when my Uncle got me into miniatures. I saw these guy in a game shop and had to have them. My first army and my favorite. (Even if I they're currently on the shelf till I get what I need from the new stuff)
My life started as a wolf on the day I died...I had slain a hundred fold and carried twice that number in cuts, slashes, and fractures. Upon the field of battle I swam among my tribes foes like a Kraken crashing through storm waves! I alone was left to carve out my kin's vengeance soon succumbed to my mortal wounds...I died and rose anew...AAARRRWWWOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

I started off with Eldar actually, then a couple years after 3rd edition came out I told a friend of mine I wanted tot ry something else for a bit, and asked to borrow some of his minis for a game or two.

He gave me SWs, and I mean he GAVE them to me. It was amazing. They fit my playstyle well, and I had always had a love affair with norse mythology. Ive gone away and come back again, but theyve always been a favorite since.

I started off in 1995 or 1996, I was originally going to go with Dark Angels, but one of my friends went ahead and picked them up and I didn't want to repeat. At that time there was a serious problem with the Wolves. In the stores where I was playing there were alot of low model count armies.....Wolf Guard Terminator Armies.....teleporting wolf guard terminator armies all armed with either Assault Cannons or Heavy Flamers.... I decided that it was too much fun to not use the other things so I did, and I won quite a bit too. But then 3rd edition came and I was stuck without a codex for a while, and then there were so many changes and I lost interest. The last time I played I was running an assault army against Tau.

2003, Fallujah, Iraq.

Bored to death (trust me fellahs, there is a lot of boredom along with war). My buddy was a player and had a stack of the novels (Eisenhorn, Gaunt) and a battered Space Wolf book.

It was all over but for the rending. That night I practiced my chainsword swings in Fallujah! :D

2001, Tampa, Fl.

I had just moved back to the States after living 2 years in Uruguay. My group played Warhammer Fantasy but i couldnt find anybody there that did. So at the LGS, i started hanging out with the 40k gamers and decided to take the plunge. i chose the Wolves because:

1) Norse mythology is awesome.

2) they look savage...moer savage then orcs

3). They were geneticly enhanced Viking killing machines, who looked savage.

see a pattern?

I have deviated a bit since then, trying the DA, RG, GK, Tau, Eldar, Guard, DiY Marines, but always had my Wolves. I now play them solely, and have got ride of everything else to build my collection. topping around 11k.

WLK

It all began when I was about 8 after seeing my cousins IG. I loved the modells and spent whatever money I had on just random blisters, whatever I could afford back then (which was alot more than you can nowerdays...). Anyway I found out that a friend of mine played and not knowing much about the hobby asked him for advice.

He originally slated marines (maybe 'cause he played chaos and was in character I dunno) and after letting me paint some pink to show how girly they were I settled on Nids.

Sometime later I thought about delving into a 2nd army and fell in love with the Wolves of Russ, unfortunately a couple of months after I started my group disbanded.

About a year ago (after several years of being fascinated by ancient history) I started reading about Norse mythology and Asatruism and was hooked. Skip foward to a few months ago, having read the Eddas, me moving to a different city, actually having a GW in the same area code and the re-release of SW I began where I left off. Infact played my first game yesturday using most of the stores army, winning an annhilation mission 7 to 1, Mjolnir necklace hanging proudly from my neck. Glad I didn't put Russ and the allfather to shame.

11 years ago in a log cabin in the middle of the woods.

At the time my aunt was dating a guy and on that particular weekend his family was having relatives in to visit. I was invited to come over because they had a nephew coming in that was about my age. His grandmother asked him, "Why don't you show him your little figurines?" She was referring to his warhammer models but of course I had never heard of them. So we spent the next like 5-6 hours just sitting and talking about warhammer and listening to the offspring (Ahh the 90s).

That was my first exposure to warhammer. Now if memory serves me correctly around 1998 was when the 3rd edition Wolf Codex came out and he had that issue of WD with him. That's when I declared I would make a Wolf army. Well unfortunately I ended up starting with Ultramarines, played Smurfs for a few years and later tried a couple DIY chapter ideas, then a couple years ago I decided it's finally time I start my Wolf army. Past few years in my free time I've been stripping old models and rebuilding, re-equipping, and remodeling them, in addition to buying a few new models as well.

About 4 years ago after being beaten by my Nephews Chaos army (i played eldar) i decided i needed a Powerarmour army, didn't like Ultras hated painting red and i was not ready for men in robes. Obviously only Spacewolves were fit for me.

15 years ago my buddy and I were playing the Battle Tech miniature game and he pulled out some roughly painted IG and showed them to me. He then said "you think you can paint better than that?" "I told him yes I think I can" (He is still better at painting than me!)

He then gave me some terminators and we went to the local LGS that week. We played a mini-game they had there and the shop worker ran us through a scenario - oh wow - were we hooked! He went Eldar and I went Space Wolves - have never looked back since- have almost 10000 points (went up 2000 even though I swore I wouldn't buy anymore - the new models are too cool!)

I did buy some Daemon Hunters (2000 pts) 2 years ago and painted up the termies, but have yet to play the army -

I read so much Norse Mythology in jr/high school how could I go anywhere else besides wolves -

I do miss 4th edition somewhat though - went an entire year without losing ('Ard Boyz and all) but it's not that way anymore - oh well - I will never play anything but wolves... and the new codex is fun

Written this story a 100 times

Went to a store with a friend who wanted us to get in to magic

They where playing a 2nd ED game i think BA against orks, i'v looked at the game for a bout 2 rounds and my buddy wanted to go, went back in the store and had a quick look trough the 40K books, and bought a citidal miniatures cataloge, the green one, on the first page of that book is a image of Bjorn (the downloadeble desktop image on this board now) Loved that model.

A few years later i bought the 3th ED SW dex (must have been brand new than) but didnt do anything with the game.

Again a few years later i bought the model of bjorn, and again didnt do anything with it, untill i was done with school and had a job, i went to amsterdam with some friends and bought the starterbox, started painting SW's, this should be about 8 or 9 years ago, but the love for bjorn and the wolves must be much older, if only i went for 40K over that dumb game magic <_<

I 'first' started when the old metal spacewolf terminator box came out, I had that along with a box of blood claws, grey hunters and a landspeeder.

However, being rather young, i quickly got bored of grey and moved onto Imperial fists <_<

Well I've stuck with Imperial fists ever since, but, on the release of the new codex, I started a space wolf army proper.

The reason is this: the previous codex was too unbalanced, and catered (accidentally) towards powergaming folk, which resulted in a fair few un-enjoyable games against certain players. Plus, I never saw a fully/nicely apinted SW army on the tabletop. However, thankfully, the new codex is brilliant, its far more balanced, themed and characterful. It makes space wolves 'fun' again both for the user and the opponent. part of this is through simplification, part through the saga system and partly through the great new stories & models.

Well done!

Twas two weeks shy of ten years ago (Yay 18th BD, ale for me  ) that I asked for my first serious warhammer perchase. And even then I knew that I had some spiritual connection with wolves. So it was a natural choice.
It was towards the end of second edition, I only played one game under that system (still miss my Terminator lord with thunder hammer, combat drugs, warp jump and medi-pak) but I chose Wolves over Dark Angels because there wasn't a Terminator Captain model for the DA. Then I really got involved with third edition. I've not played regularly for a couple of years now, but with the new codex I'm trying to get back to it.

I started nearly 8 years ago with the LotR models, and then moved towards 40K. Wolves were my first army, and though I have two others which get regular use (Daemons and Traitor Guard) the Wolves are my first choice. They went on hold for about a year whilst we were in limbo, but are now back on track with a massive revamp thanks to the new book and models.

Skol!

My first game? About summer of '92 when a few friends were playing and asked if I wanted to try it out. Played for a while before going into the service not long after and got back into it about 4-5yrs ago. Been a Wolf from the begining, only army I have ever played. First model I ever got was Bjorn and he is still my HQ of choice!

It was over 19 years ago that I got Space Crusade and started playing as Blood Angels, but within a year my obsession with Teutonic/Norse/Celtic mythologies brought me to the Wolves. Within two years I had started painting my Marines grey.

My first Space Wolf specific mini was Ragnar, still have him. Painted blonde, does anyone remember when the 'Eavy Metal Ragnar was blonde?

Methinks someone has recently taken the Blackmane name too literally.

For myself I come in the hobby nearly 12 years ago. i start by warhammer battle with an orc and goblin army follow by a dwarf army. after several years my brother start an 40k army so to follow i look up the army possibilities. I like marine theme but was bored by "classic" fluff of vanilla marines. Then i start to buy white dwarf for mordheim article and i saw the release of 3rd edition of Space Wolves. It's how i came to wolves a space marines army but with a tone more interesting fluff than all others combined. Plus space wolves seems the nearest visual army in 40k to dwarf (rune and viking aspect) if we exclude squat who had already disappeared when I come in 40k
So we spent the next like 5-6 hours just sitting and talking about warhammer and listening to the offspring (Ahh the 90s).

Back when they were good!

My friend introduced me to Ork models bout 20 years ago. I thought they looked cool. He told me you can play games with them, I said cool. Got me some and we played. I just took his word for the rules, never even knew there was a book!

Then me and some other friends found the Rogue Trader book and wow, there's a whole load of s**t. Got some WDs saw they were gonna release the 2nd ED box and cool. My friend got some Eldar and I kept hold of my Orks. Back then you could spend all day playing a game.

Then they released the Wolves codex and bam, I've been chopping up bad guys ever since. Who wouldn't like super human drunkerds with axes? Awesome. I knew I wanted to get some straight away. Didn't hurt they were hard as nails though!

Bobman out

Space Wolves were my second army (Dark Angels were my first - ironically enough), back when I first started 40k about 8/9 years ago. They got left behind for a long time until the EoT campaign which inspired me to return to the Wolves (with a 13th Company army)...

Started in 2004 (started at age 30) but I had always seen 40k army boxes in stores since 19 while in college. Was always intrigued with what game would involve so much brutal imagery.

Years later I played Chaos Gate, and thought "man I love this brutal futuristic universe". Then later came Dawn of War beta and I "Googled" space marine, and Warhammer 40k, found GW's website and thought "I must collect an army". I first thought crons, then though "nooo must be space marine". And after looking at many different chapters I just kept coming back to these blue grey guys with axes, beards and pelts. When I read their background on the site that sealed the deal. (I love techno futuristic barbarian types)

i am sad to stay i am only seriously starting to collect space wolves since the new codex (haven't started yet i ned to get some funds, and finish my Salamanders).

but i have been a long time looker at the Space Wolves, just their codexwas never great so i wanted to have the normal marine codex.

but i have liked them for a long time, and so i am sort of a Grey Hunter rather than a Blood Claw. But i'm not a long fang becuase i aint been a live for long enough :)
