melabi
In fluff, space marine battle barges are one of the most powerful ships of the imperium. It is rediculously large.. estimated several kilometers at minimum. In other ships of similar size, tens to hundreds of thousands of men operate the ship. (Like the battleships of the navy.. etc) So someone other than space marines should work in our ships as well, as the ships are too large for - ~thousand marines? Maybe civilized chapters like the ultra have plenty of educated men to work for them - but what about ours? Certainly not the natives - Uh.. maybe sevitors? What do you think? (We DO have battle barges right?) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/184713-who-works-in-our-battle-barge-p/ Share on other sites
stinkenheim
chapter serfs and some servitors. servitors lack the ability to adapt rapidly and think for themselves so they are task with more mundane roles, like weapon targetting and such. the majority of the crew are serfs or bondsmen as they are known to the wolves. some of these are marines who failed to complete thier initiation either because their bodies rejected the implantations or because they failed some tasks due to injury. basically if they don't become a marine but dont die they will become a bondsman. aslo there are many that live on asaheim and in the fang. they are there to do mundane things like cooking, cleaning, walking the bloodclaws etc. some have served the chapter for generations, and in boarding actions they will often fight alongside marines as the ship will be large and the number of marines small. they are true fenrisian warriors who by bad luck or some genetic quirk were unable to become the marines they now serve Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/184713-who-works-in-our-battle-barge-p/#findComment-2183449 Share on other sites
CainTheHunter
Chapter serfs of course. There's plenty of them in the Fang - that was mentioned in one of the original trilogy books, but I can't remember where exactly. Schertenleib
they are there to do mundane things like cooking, cleaning, walking the bloodclaws etc. Great now I have an image of a Blood Claw on a leash being followed by a bondsman with a super-sized pooper scooper over his shoulder stuck in my mind. nurglespuss
Except for the time Lukas the Trickster and his blood claws drop pod was the only one that failed to launch, and they were left in charge of the ship.... Lukas: To the Bridge! Blood Claw: What about the battle? Lukas: What about it, Whelp? Blood Claw: well there are no more drop pods, or thunderhawks.... Lukas: Why do you think we're headed for the bridge? Blood Claw: Awww Lukas..... Lukas: Yea thats right! Were gonna land this baby! Blood Claw: Lukas... You Crazy?! (Now read it with the Blood Claw having Chris Tuckers voice). Grey Mage
We dont have serfs, we have Bondsmen. Theyre rather well treated, and from all the fluff read so far well respected for their skills. And yes, bondsmen comprise most of the crew of our ships, with some tech-adepts, navigators, astropaths, and the occaisonal heaviliy wounded marine who still has the will so serve, but isnt badly wounded enough for a dreadnaught.
