WG with Storm Bolters...

Hi all,

I've been trying to think up an all WG army using Logan, but without going heavy on the TDA (already got a normal army thats 3-0 up but want another option). I was looking at 10 WG with Storm Bolters and noticed it says Assault 2 for the Storm Bolters - I always thought they needed TDA to carry them, but this doesnt look like it does...

So am I right in thinking that they can fire 20 shots into the enemy, then charge and start swinging upto 30 attacks (2 base, 1 charge)?

Plus if I wanted to make them real CC monsters I could start adding the cheaper special weapons that WG get.

If they come up against horde armies they're firing 2 shots each at 24", and can withdraw 6" as they can move and fire (compare this to rapid firing bolters at 12" and not moving - its starting to look pretty sick). I'm imagining a withdrawing shooting line massacring orks and nids... move back 6", fire 20 shots, move back 6", fire 20 shots, then plough in and finish off in CC.

Could anyone clarify on this please, it's feeling almost like a "too good to be true" moment.

Cheers

you are correct, storm bolters are assault 2 so unlike the rapid fireing bolters you may assault after firing with them :)

and i too like the idea of power armoured WG squads with grimnar rather than most peoples thoughts of having to take terminator armoured troops just because you can.

Awesome, thanks for the reply - will start working on a Grimnar army soon!

Cheers

Hehe, considering a basic Wolf Guard costs the same as our old Grey Hunters with bolters and they get grenades thrown into the bargain!

I mean I could even run my old GH packs with two power weapons as WG! Only downside with them is that Power Armoured WG don't get access to special weapons, I would ave liked to see the option for one in five to take either a special weapon (PA only) or heavy weapon (TDA only) but I guess its game balance.

And we never had access to Storm Bolters in power armour, which was upsetting because normal marines could...

They were reserved for the guys in TDA, thankies for overruling though! Now my TH pack leaders get their storm bolters!

love it so much. i am so going to steal that. i'm just gonna have a wolf guard unit with storm bolters acting as a moving fire platform :)

i actually can't figure out how many points it would be as i don't have my codex (i leant it to a friend :() so i'll have to wait to see how much it will cost, but it sounds preety cheap with about 25 points a guy i'm guessing (with just the storm bolters)

Athiair :(

Just note: thats a crapton of conversion to do, and 23pts a wound.

Its pretty, oh so pretty.... but its not without drawbacks.

agreed but i just have the image of grizzeled warriors. blasting away keeping the enemy quite a bit away. but still shreeding them :D

Athiair :D

If you going to run 10 of them on foot, might as well bring 2 WG in TDA and hand out 2 assault Cannon and really add to their fire power or if you want add 2 CML so there is never anything out of range. sure 63 points is way beyond 21 but very much worth every point in my opinion.

Vrox.

Storm Bolters are great, and my WG force will certainly have some in each squad...but probably no more than two or three per squad. Recall that it doesn't count as a Pistol or a CCW, so you lose the offhand bonus. Load your whole squad with them and you get a lot of 24" firepower, but you lose all of those delicious offhand bonus attacks.

One or two units with SBs for sitting back on objectives might be a good idea (actually, I kind of like it), but I wouldn't do them across the entire force. Those points will add up, besides.

Just keep in mind that once you start adding special Close combat weapons, Terminator armor becomes the real bargain.

Its only an additional TWO points to upgrade a Wolfguard with a Stormbolter and Powerweapon to have Teminator armor as well, at that point you might as well splurge.

The terminatopur armour is not -that- cool. at 33 points for a regular armour it is cheaper than regular Terminator armour, but once you add more weaponds that cost 40 it is not cheaper than assoult terminatours (who can teleport no less.)

I have been playing with the idea to have some 21 point bolter models, and then have some 33 point point terminatour armours thar are gonne "take the saves".

Say 63 points for 3 regular WG with storm bolters, 99 for 3 with armour that can soak some damadge. (It is worth it isen't it? Or isit better with just more plain models?) and then you have one terminatour with asoult cannon-or-what-ever and a CC weapon for like 68 points. Since none of them are spesial caracters you can remover whoever you like when the damadge starts hitting.

Can anybody do some math and find out what is the best? Preferably for a DP. (Like, 2 terminatours, 1 terminatour with asoult cannon, 2 with storm bolters (cannon fodder after the 2 first terminatours go) and 2 with storm bolters and power swords or something?

That would be 10 shots at 24 range + 4 from the heavy bolter. I know that a regyular pod can pump out 10 shots at 24, 20 at 12 -and- if they have 2 plasma weaponds they can more beefy shots. They have more HP and and regular cooler.

I mean, when is it point eficient to put a WG in a terminatour sout?

Chainsaw,

It is a good deal. If you really like having Storm Bolter spam try playing pure Grey Knights (one of my other armies), where the entire force comes with Storm Bolters and Strength 6 CCWs.

Valerian

On second thought (yes, I just qouted myself), I should try playing my Grey Knights as "counts-as" Wolves. I'd have four full packs of Wolf Guard in Power Armour with Storm Bolters and CCWs; the Justicar would be a regular Wolf Guard, but with a Frost Blade, and I could put one or two in each pack in TDA with Frost Blade and Assault Cannon (from Psycannon). I'd also have at least one Wolf Guard Terminator Pack, two Venerable Dreadnoughts, a Logan Grimnar Grand Master, and Brother Captain Rune Priest. Damn, I'm going to have to run the numbers on this- at 21 points per Wolf Guard, they'll each run quite a bit cheaper than a 25 point Grey Knight, and the 41 point WG with Storm Bolter and Frost Blade still runs less than the 50 point Justicar. They'd also get 3 attacks on the charge/counterattack, which is better than the Knights, even with True Grit.

Might have to it, just for the laughs (and I don't feel bad about playing counts as, since I actually have a full Wolves army anyway.

For 4 points over the cost of a Wolf Guard with storm bolter, the Grey Knight gets WS5 and S6.

I think they have the advantage there.

If you're using the new Space Wolves sprues I think each one comes with a right handed and left handed storm bolter. If you build a few squads you'll have plenty left over to make your Wolf Guard squad.

I'd use them like Sternguard. Maybe one with a power fist and the rest just equipped with storm bolters. Move and shoot, move and shoot.

With the SW Pack box you will get only right arm SB, but with the WG box you will get a single left hand SB.

I have also thought of the idea. It would be killer in a foot slogging army.

The key here is not to overdo your characters, eg-

If you want power weapon wielders, then add them as termies

Chainfist & Assault cannon - tda

Power fist & storm bolter in PA

Storm bolter & ccw pa

This is how i would kit them. If i played a foot slogger list, but i play mechanised assault, so my ones are kitted more for close combat rather than ranged fire(i got my long fangs for that job :) )
