Evilmerlin
The games I played for this tournament would be my 3rd to 6th game of 5th Edition Warhammer 40K. As such do expect bone headed moves. :P I took a Space Wolves army to the tournament and at 1000pts was struggling to fit in all the cool stuff in the army book. So instead taking a few good stuff, I just took a bit of everything and decided to just use the tournament as a setting to see what worked and what didn’t. Tournament had 8 players. 1 Space Wolves 2 Space Marines 3 Tyranids 1 Ork 1 Daemons (with an awesomely painted Forge World Great Unclean One being used a a Greater Daemon) Also, most the events are a big blur to me now so I won’t be doing a turn by turn report, just the general gist of what happened reach game. Space Wolves 1000pts HQ Rune Priest -Chooser of the Slain -Living Lightning -Tempest Wrath Elites Wolf Scouts -Melta Gun -Plasma Pistol Wolf Guard -3x Bolters -3x Power Fist Troops Grey Hunters x9 (Alpha) -Melta Gun -Rhino Grey Hunters x5 (Beta) -Melta Gun -Razorback w/ TL Heavy Bolter Grey Hunters x5 (Gamma) -Melta Gun -Razorback w/ TL Heavy Bolter Fast Attack Thunder Wolves Cavalry x2 -Thunder Hammer Heavy Support -3x Heavy Bolters -2x Missile Launchers ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Round 1 vs Paul, Tyranids Paul’s list had two Carnifexes, 1 kitted out for shooting (with templates galore) and 1 kitted out for close combat (with attacks galore), a Zoanthrope, two units of Gaunts, three Warriors kitted for shooting. And finally a Brood Lord with his accompanying Gene Stealers. So the first mission was Capture and Control using the Pitched Battle deployment. We placed our objectives relatively closed to our side of the board. I had mine behind a tower of sorts while Paul had his behind a house. I won the roll to go first and immediately Grey Hunters Alpha sitting on it. While The other two Grey Hunter packs zoomed ahead to try to wrest control of his. Thunder Wolves were just hanging back since I wasn’t really sure what in the world to do with them. Long Fangs and Rune Priest found a nice bit cover and sat there. Paul had his Brood Lord, Gene Stealers, Shooty-fex and Zoanthrope straight up the middle, Warriors took a bunk on my left, Gaunts sat back to control his own objective while the second gaunt and the Killy-fex took my right flank. So I didn’t have a clue how a Tyranid army played so it just picked targets based on what I knew to be rather nasty. Seeing that I had little chance of hurting the Carnifexes with my shooting, I poured pretty much all my fire into his Brood Lord and Gene Stealers. Took a out a good chunk of them but there were still rather threatening. His turn saw quite a bit of shooting with tons of templates flying around, generally in the direction of my Long Fangs. Must be something about churning out 9 + D6 shots and two templates each turn…. As the game went on, I finally decide to do something about the gaunts sitting on his objective. Sent a pack of Grey Hunters with their Razorback after it and wiped it off the board. Same thing with his other gaunt squad, this time by the Wolf Scouts. So Paul now had no more troops on the board and the best he could hope for was a draw or if he tabled me for the win. His Killy-fex finally made it into combat with Pack Alpha’s Rhino, which he promptly blew up killing a Grey Hunter in the process. Now comes Bone Headed Move 1. I decide to send my Thunder Wolves after it. Dealt a wound through rending and on his return strike, killed them both before the Thunder Hammer could strike. Don’t engage Killy-Fex with Crushing Claw and Implant Attacks unless you can soak up the wounds….. Pack Alpha assaulted the Killy-fex and each time the Power fist would take chunks out it till it finally died and again left me in control of my objective. The Grey Hunter pack sent after his objective had succumbed to shooting from the Warriors and his Brood Lord assaulting. Damn I5….. Finally on the last turn, Paul needed to roll a 6 for his Brood Lord’s Fleet move to get to within 3” of my objective to contest it and he promptly does so, ending the game in a draw. Result: Draw MVP: Lots and lots of Heavy Bolters. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Round 2, Christ, Tyranids (I’m starting to see a pattern here…) Another game with another Tyranid player. Christ had a Carnifex with both close combat and shooting load outs, a Hive Tyrant also kitted out for shooting and close combat. Two Gaunts and one Hormaguant squad, three Warriors with templates galore and a Ravener or was it Lictor? It’s the one that can deep strike though he didn’t choose to do so. Probably had some other stuff which I cannot remember. Mission was Seize Ground and Spear Head deployment. Four objectives scattered around the board, one in each quarter. This game was a real blur for me so I’ll try my best to highlight the key events. I deployed in the quarter to my right while Christ deployed in the quarter to my left. This time I vowed to use my Thunder Wolves more aggressively and not charging them into hopeless battles. So Long Fangs and Grey Hunter Alpha took the objective in my quarter conveniently situated in bunker and as usual, the Razorbacks and Thunder Wolves charged forward going after the objective further up field. Christ sent only a single hormagaunt squad after my objective while the other two sat his quarter on his. Backing up his hormagaunts with supporting fire was his Carnifex, Hive Tyrant, Warriors and that Ravener/Lictor. As usual, Long Fangs took the brunt of his shooting but managed to weather rather well. I shot off most his Hormagaunts and finished it off with the Thunder Wolves who in turn got promptly shot into a fine red mist when his entire army’s guns shot at them. On hind sight that wasn’t such a bad thing since for a change my Long Fangs were not getting shot at…;) Wolf Scouts turned up and decided to come in on my right (rolled a 2…) which I had most of my stuff thus being a spectator for the entire game. Christ finally decided to move one squad of Gaunts towards the unclaimed objective in my left quarter and supported by his Warriors. Seeing that he only had one 8 bugs squad and that Ravener/Lictor thing on his objective. I zoomed a Razorback pack towards his. The other pack having long since been tied up by his Hive Tyrant. Over two turns, the Razorback and dismounted Grey Hunter pack managed to kill off the Gaunts and the Ravener/Lictor without any losses and ran towards the objective. Game ended with me holding two objective, contesting one and Christ holding one. Victory to the Wolves! Result: Win MVP: Long Fangs and Razorbacks (Heavy Bolters FTW!) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Round 3, Ken, Tyranids (Again!?) Last game was against the THIRD Tyranid player of the day, Ken! Ken’s list was very very shooting orientated. Hive Tyrant came with that crazy combo that gave it twelve shots re-rolling everything! Two squads of Warriors with more shooting, Carnifex with even more shooting and two gaunt squads that shoots and came Without Number. Oh and three Zoanthropes too. Mission was Annihilation and Dawn of War deployment. I rolled to deploy first but Ken managed to seize the initiative and went first. His first shooting phase didn’t do much though I think it immobilized one Razorback. My return fire saw a Gaunt squad go down to a single bug. Over the course of the game, as usual, my Long Fangs ate a ton of fire which whittled them down to a single Long Fang with Heavy Bolter. He will trade in his Heavy Bolter for terminator armour, thunder hammer and storm shield after taking the vows of the Lone Wolf. But not before finishing off two Zoanthropes and some Gaunts. Thunder Wolves assaulted the other Gaunt squad, killed them all and then realized that there were was a angry Hive Tyrant with nasty guns looking at them. Yup, they died. Did I mention how crazy it was to roll TWELVE shots re-rolling EVERYTHING? Epic moment for me was when the Carnifex assaulted into my Grey Hunter pack Beta (they finally dismounted from the immobilized Razorback), they managed to kill it without suffering any losses to themselves! Epic! Game ended with kill points in my favour, 5 to his 4. Result: Win! By skin of my teeth! MVP: Grey Hunter pack Beta! (and all the heavy bolters of course) So two wins and draw got me the top prize of the day! Again I apologize for the paucity and quality of this report since after three games of bugs, my brain is a little fried. Overall, I had a great day with great games all round. Though I doubt I want to see another Tyranid army opposite me anytime soon… ;) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AAR Need to learn how to use Thunder Wolves better. I was rather reluctant in sending them into the fray and each time I sent them in, they died…horribly. Torrent of fire is rather effective, since your opponent is bound to fail those saves eventually. Even with a 2+ save. Though it isn’t all that great when you wound on a 6+. Wolf Scouts are a little iffy at the moment, I think they would work much better if I had attached a Wolf Guard with a Power Fist to them. Changes I would make to the list. 1. Drop the Wolf Scouts, throw in another Thunder Wolf with Storm Shield. They really really needed that Storm Shield to soak up all the hits that bypassed their armour save. Plus having two just isn’t enough to survive the torrent of fire that inevitably finds their way to them. Wolf Scouts weren’t that spectacular in those games, maybe because there wasn’t any juicy back field stuff that they could actually do something about. 2. Upgrade Wolf Guard Bolters to Combi-Meltas. Have the points for it after dropping the Wolf Scouts and two melta shots are always better than one! 3. Perhaps change Tempest Wrath to Jaws of the World Wolf This one would be a meta-game call I would think. While Tempest would be good against armies that tend to have deep striking elements (ie Marines) but it did jack all since none of the tyranid players deep struck anything while the presence of multiple Carnifexes made for very very juicy targets for Jaws. It would have been rather awesome if I had paired with the Daemon player who had to deep strike everything other than his two Princes though. Catheras
What would be the point of taking 2 shooting powers with the rune priest, you woul would'nt it be better to take storm caller instead as you can't shoot with both powers at the same time. I'm assuming that the Rune priest has master psyker ability. Other than that i think the changes you have suggested are good, scouts out and Thunderwolf Cavlary in  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/184850-first-tournament-report/#findComment-2186054 Share on other sites
nurglespuss
Hi there :tu: Just going through your list (in my head, don't have codex) did you have a squad leader in your longfang pack? My mental calculations can't seem to slot him in? Cheers! Evilmerlin
@rodgers37 It was random pairings for the first round and then swiss there after. So it just happened that ALL the Tyranid players had the same results as me and we got paired up. @Catheras No Master of Runes for the Rune Priest. The only reason to take two shooting powers is that you get to choose the most effective shot you need. I think for an all comers list, that flexibility is rather important. So If I were facing IG, Living Lightning all the way and next game Nid-zilla, Jaws would be a god send. But like I said, choosing powers for the Rune Priest would likely turn out to be a meta call more than anything else. You pick em base on what you are most likely to face. I planned for Space Marines and boy was I wrong! :P @nurglespuss No Wolf Guard for the Long Fangs just the standard 6 wolf pack (1 leader, 5 Heavies). The three Wolf Guards were all attached to my Grey Hunters.
