SW with horned helmets

Now, since I'm not a Space Wolves player (or indeed any bigger a SW-fan than the average SM enthusiast), I might not be making any sense in what I'm about to propose.. But why do I never see any Space Wolves with horned helmets??

I mean, you're gimmicked up with all the other viking-stuff (beards, axes, runes, Norse names), so why not complete the whole get-up with Hagar-style headgear? :D

Because even vikings rarely, if ever, wore horned helmets historically. They were a fad that lasted less than a decade, and people hundreds of years later picked up the idea and ran with it.

Horns are for drinking out of and making bows with.

As soon as I saw the topic I was going to make the very same point.

And also we're getting enough stick for not being serious enough and too much of a Norse (I dislike the term "Viking" for some reason) rip off.

Actually, just to clrify, there is absolutely no historical (anecdotal or otherise) evidence to support vikings having horns on their helmets, its entirely a concoction of (compared to vikings) modern times.

However, as I and my mate are fond of saying: Just because it never happened, doesn't mean it would never have happened if vikings had had much access to horns, and the inclination!

Imagine the scene: Viking picks up drinking horn, drains it, grabs his mates, drains it... through bleary eyes he looks at what he has in his hands... and slowly, with a smirk on his lips, places them on his chest, shouting "look at my moobies Eric!". Later the next day, Eric awoke to find the horns stuck to his helmet....

You, sir win the thread!

Actually early Scandinavians did use horned helmets for rare religious ceremonies, but the horns were metallic and part of the helmet. I think there are some pics in the osprey books or in one of McBride's historical illustrations. Otherwise Grey Mage and Mikal are 100% right. Vikings from 700Ad up definitely never had horns, but no one is stopping anyone from giving SW horns if they have such bad taste :D

What do you mean no Space Wolves have horned helmets?!?!? Mine do, see:

I admit it's not the most fluffy or origional thing but it was a former 13th Company army and I decided to leave the horned helms in place... I think they look cool... :D

I take what I said back in your case. You do have good taste!!!

Haha, thanks. :D

My favorite horned helmet in my army is this Wolf Guard actually:

He's the only Wolf Guard with a horned helm though, I like to spread them out. If I am remembering right there's about 7 horned helmets in my army numbering 130 Marines so all is good in moderation. ;)

That said I do recall some periods using horned helms either actual horn or metal as a way to absorb sword strikes power before they struck the helmet itself. But the popular image of massive bone horns going out to either side of a vikings helmet are way overblown and rediculous, but they have somehow worked their way into popular culture...

I have to say though I much prefere horned helmets to horse hair or feather plumes (not the roman horse hair plumes, the giant ponytail things worn in late medieval and renaissance periods).

My reason for not having horns on their helmets:

they are meant to follow wolves, not bison and elk (although Space Deer would be great for a Christmas themed army, like night goblins with some putty to make their hats fluffy, and fanatics with the balls decorated like Christmas tree baubles)

My reason for having horns on their helmets:

because we cop flak for being "space vikings" and even if they never had horns, who cares? just roll with it and go overkill so that they eventually get the idea that it doesn't really bother us :)

Roll with what you want friend :P

and you can also add in to the fluff that your squad of wolfies come from an area of fenris that has a large population of the horned kind of creature.

elk, bison, buffalo, deer, moose, dragons etc - don't pick anything endangered however so not to offend, and point out that they were farmed for FOOD and the acquisition of horns is a by product.

I see many of you have already thoroughly thought the matter over :) I should of course have mention that I AM aware that the vikings didn't actually wear that kind of helmets (I'm from Norway, I would know :P), but still it seemed to fit into the whole Space Vikings-theme :P I don't suppose any of you guys have converted your SW to carry big barrels of mead, or even poisonous fungi (which some vikings ate before battle, or so popular history has it :))

i have a grey hunter pack named after its "pack leader" Haegr Ale-Father...the entire pack have drinking steins attached to their belts and their Rhino has 4 kegs on it...

WLK

Because there's much better things to do with horns?

I like the idea the wolves aren't generally fans of helmets, admittedly they only mention the enclosed astartes helmets because they mess with the sense but because I have such trouble painting flesh I tend to have the majority helmered, they're operating on a planet with nil oxygen...

I also don't like the look of helmeted heads, personal preference there.

Plus I've read varying things and the Wolves do appreciate the act of subtlety sometimes, a giant set of horns might give the game away a bit, serving to make a large person even larger...
