The Monkey's Iron Wolves

Recommended Posts

Greeting Marine Lovers! Been a lurker here for a little while and a total Marine Fiend for many many a year. Been looking through the forums and am loving what I'm seeing here, the standard of work is really high.

Been playing Marines from the begining (some 12 years ago) shifting between Imperial and Chaos with each army. I'll start off with some random previos marines and stuff before I get to the puppies.

Some guys from my Ultramarines 1st Company

You may have guessed that I like Dreads, A LOT. Heaps of my stuff never gets beyond the converting stage due to too many ideas in my head and too many new shinny things on the shelves at GW.

Can't fit the actual Wolves in this post, you'll have to wait till the next exciting installment!

YAY. I can post the rest of my stuff...

Thanks Commander, happy to be here.

Now onto the actual point of this thread: The Iron Wolves. I originally was running these guys as a Deathwing force consisting of 3 Termi squads, 2 Dreads and a Belial stand-in. After the new codex I'm still not gonna run them as SWs but have instead decided to use the basic marines codex for the army as I can then get scouts and a few other funky things.

Without further procrastination, here come the puppies:

Wolf Lord

and the Scouts

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/PowerHungryMonkey/IMGP0446.jpg

well, thats the lot for the moment. Its been a slow process. I strted the army before I even knew the new Wolf Codex was comming out and have really only gotten this far. The updates will be slow but there should be a fair bit in each update. I still need to add two 5 man scout squads with bolters and missile launchers, two 3 man scout bike squads, a Landspeeder Storm, 2 drop pods for the Dreads and an Iron Priest (MotF). The painting will not start untill I have the whole force built and converted but I have a concept scheme already worked out:

Any C&C is welcome and I'm happy to run through some "how tos" on any of the conversions I've done.

Great Plasticard Work.. I must say you Kit-bash like a pro.. Those conversion are very well done..

Thanks. The kit-bashing come from knowing the GW range very well. I've been known to buy whole boxes and regiments for just a few choice parts. Plus having played about 15 marine armies of various persuasions I've gotta a massive bitz box of marine and other bitz.

The chaplian-apothecary fusion is an old trait of the wolves. I was already making that previous Wolf Priest with that idea before the new codex came out. When I saw the new bitz tho I was forced to tear him apart and do a re-make with all the pretty new bitz.

Both the Lord and Rune Priest are based off the Chaos Lord model (infact all my termies are atleast half chaos in bitz) with plasticard over the greaves. The chest on the Lord was a bit of a fluke, I didn't inted to have the 'teeth' look originally, I'd just added to much plasticard to the chest before I cut it to shape. A very hapy mistake tho. all the joints on the 3 HQs are spaced out with plasticard as well as the soles of the feet. This is actually the first time I've used plasticard to heavy change the armour of marines.

I didn't mention this before but I have imposed a rule for this army: No metal, no resin, just plastic. This has led me to scour the range like never before and try out new stuff with plasticard and GS.

I was confused at first when I saw your beautiful Ultramarines, then I reread the post! A lovely shade you have on them... Also those dreads are wonderful! :)

To the task at hand: Lovely work! Looking forward to watching their progress!

Just a little note though, the Wolves do get Scouts, in fact they get awesome Scouts! But regardless you're doing the kits proud.

Wow so many great Dread conversions in one thread! Great job on all your stuff.

Same goes for me. The mass of plastic grey minis on my shelves is embarassing. ^^

Thanks to all for the kind words.

I know the Wolves get to use scouts but as I was making the army I had an idea that really struck me. A force comprised of only Scouts, Termis and Dreads. The idea is the scouts are an advance party for a deepstriking 1st company. So i'll be using scouts, scout bikers and landspeeder storms starting on the table, all with homing and teleport beacons. The termies and dreads would all be deepstriking along with my characters.

If I was to run this as a wolf army or even a deathwing army I wouldn't be able to get all the stuff I want. By adding a Master of the Forge to the force I can put the Dreads in Heavy Support and leave the elite section free for 3 termi squads. Depending on how my proposed 2000pts works out I might then add more to the army and build it up enough to use any of the 3 codecies for the army.

As I said, updates will be a bit far between as I don't always have access to a camera but when they do come in there will be a fair bit in them.

Your dreads are amazing  and the wolves are great too, but the one thing I have to know, is where you got/how you made the bionics for your terminators, they are spot on and just what I've been looking for.

Cheers. The bionics on the Iron Hands Termies are from the old old old Necron Immortals. When I was visiting the UK a few years ago I went to Nottingham and spent up bik on a bitz order (when GW was still doing bitz orders) and got a few of them in it. They are the exact right scale for termies are are chinky enough to look like they were Imperial made and not xeno-tech. Alas I really doubt you'll be able to get them through GW anymore (tho they may still be in the classics range) but its worth having a look on eBay or the like, I'm sure someone is trying o get rid of them. The arms work really well for termies too.

i wish i could use plasticard to make crazy awsome shields... should probly look into it.. begining with how its cut and where i can get some.

I made the shiled from a flattened tua drone. It took ages to file it down flat enough to use but its actually a lot easier than trying to cut a neat circle out of plasticard. Then I laid some strips over the face to make the planking. Leave a little gap between the strips to help brake them apart visually. The trim is from a rather thick strip of plasticard. I stuck it down at one point and gradually bent it round the edge of the shield gluing it down as I went. This is a bit of a slow process as you really have to let the glue dry before letting go or it springs back. The hard part is getting the join right. I glued the strip right up to near the join and then cut it oversized by a little bit. Then its just cutting the strip back, checking if it fits, cutting again if need and repatinging untill its right. I still have to patch up the join with a bit of GS. I also want to add some more totems and dangly what-nots to it.

Ypu can get plasticard from any hobby shop (like model train train shops and stuff) and it comes in heaps of different varieties like sheets and strips of varying thicknesses, tiles, checker-plate, I-beams, T-section, H-beams, frames, rod, tubing, blocks... basically anythign you want you can pretty much find in plasticard or make from various other types.

  • 1 month later...

LOVING the twin heavy flamer on the last dreadnought! VERY nicely made my friend. And the twin heavy bolter came out nice as well.

I know your love for dreads, I run 10 myself, and I think many people can relate to the never-getting-stuff-finished :D

The scouts came out really cool, a nice savage look to them ( doomsday anyone? )

Two thumbs up!

  • 4 weeks later...

Sorry for the realy late reply, been on holidays to the frozen north (germainia, autria and the italian land, very very nice) so have had basically zero internet access and no hobby whatsoever fro the last 5 weeks (the pain of withdrawals was getting to me). Thanks to all for the feedback, glad to see my work is appreciated.

@ Papercutdan: the zerks are made from mostls the FW World Eaters upgrade kits (the torso, head and pads as well as the chain axe heads) The arms are from the WHFB chaos marauders as well as the axe hafts and the legs are just basic chaos marine legs. I also used a few catachan arms and the head off the WHFB khorne lord on foot for the champ. The ares were really the hardest part as they are made for a slightly thinner torso so it was a bit of pinning and GS work to get them right. Otherwise tere actually isn't that much converting to them (in comparrison with my scouts for instance).

@ Cpt. Postumus: The brazier is from the WHFB vamp counts corpse cart. It ment buying a full cart for the bit (at the time I didn't know about the wonderful world of internet bitz) but it was so worth it. Only problem now is that the Templars are no more and I need a bunch of the bitz off this dread to make another one for my upcomming side project of Legion of the Damned. Really not sure if I should butcher him or not coz I know I'll never et him finished.

No new pics of the wolves yet but I have been working on them. Got the combat scout squad done up to the GS stage and have made another 5 with bolguns as well as 3 scout bikers. Got a bit side-tracked by the idea of a support dread so I went and got that started too; has missle pod and lascannos in the same style as the other dreads. I'll get some pics up soon hopefully to share the love.

Thanks all, dreads seem to be the unit that begins most armies for me or atleast becomes the central conversion point for it.

@ Mithril hound: Which dread fronts? Thers like 6 of them here, lol. The ultramarines and the new SW ones use the Chaos Defiler head but in different ways. The ultra dread was a much earlier conversion, all I did was just fit the helmet over the existing chest and then ran wires and such out of it. The current SW dreads are a lot more work. I cut back the defiler helmet at the back to it sits into the dread a lot more to give it a lower profile. The chest front is kept off to make it look like the head is inset (this is also done with the chaplain dread but using a TKs tomb scorpion tail as the head). The barrel chest is from plasticard tubing with plasticard and plastic detail added to it. I've gradually evolved how I make dreads and try out differnt thinks for each new army. The Iron Hands one uses the Mechanicus Cog from the manufactorum building. With A LOT of cutting and filling I was able to get it out of the wall section and cut it to fit over the chest of the dread. Forgot about the Imp Fists Ironclad, that uses the same chest as the SW dreads but with the helmet from the Inquisitor Artemis model that I made the techmarine out of.

@ Prophecy: To space the dreads I mainly use plasticard tubing of variours size. I really just try to get it so the head looks sort of in proportion to the body because otherwise it looks very big, as can be seen on the ultra dread. At the moment I'm only spaceing out the ankles, waist and shoulders but on my next dread I plan to actualy extend the legs rather than space them out, not too sure yet how but I think it will look better than the the ankle tubing.
