Devon M
Grey Knights seem to be painted a variety of different "greys." I see a lot of shiny metal colors, but was wondering if people liked more of a gunmetal grey, like a dark bolter type grey. Maybe basecoat boltgun grey, then wash with black. They use lighter colors on the details. Any opinions? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/185168-various-greys/ Share on other sites
jeffersonian000
That's pretty much what I do. Base coat black, dry brush Boltgun Metal, black wask, detailing as needed. I like the darker look for my Knights. SJ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/185168-various-greys/#findComment-2189230 Share on other sites
Devon M
awesome, that is what I'm thinking of doing, do you have any pics for examples? A while ago GW had a picture of a crimson fist that was black but had light blue highlights, which made it look like it was a super dark blue. I might do that, where they are nearly black with light silver/grey edging. jeffersonian000
Sorry. While I do have pics of my GK army, all of the pics were taken with my cell, and frankly all the pictures suck. templargdt
I use basecoat black and armor steel main color with a thinned layer of blue ink for the armor on my knights. Looks really nice IMHO. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/185168-various-greys/#findComment-2189439 Share on other sites
Lungboy
Adeptus Battlegrey as shadow, Codex as the main colour with Fortress as highlight. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/185168-various-greys/#findComment-2189582 Share on other sites
satanaka
Boltgun metal, wash Asurmen blue. Gives a similar effect to the one in the codex color How To page.. KingDeath
I prefer the knight in shining armour approach with chainmail ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/185168-various-greys/#findComment-2189595 Share on other sites
Winterlight
Base coat of black then chainmail then a very very liberal badab black (black wash). Has the bonus of making the armour look quite worn. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/185168-various-greys/#findComment-2190117 Share on other sites
fuzbuckle
Base coat with Army Painter Plate Mail spray primer, heavy wash with Asurman Blue, paint the details, dip in Army Painter dark tone and done. silversmith82
As per the fluff, GK armor is actually left unpainted so it'd be the color of bare metal. It IS coated with some sort of super ridiculous clearcoat and any GK would rather be killed in battle than be caught not observing his wargear rites so unless they're on extended campaign, its going to be really REALLY shiny gleaming bare metal. As for what you want to paint it ourself? Its whatever floats your boat honestly. I tend to prefer the blue steel look with a ton of decoration and embellishments. Devon M
if its just the bare armor, shouldn't it be more of a dark, matte color since its made of ceramite, not metal? Devon M
Ya, I think it makes more sense for them to be grey, rather then silvery. And if I do mine dark grey, its just a different shade so its fine. Devon M
do you mean like, my GK look the same as yours? if so, then all BT, all IF, all BA, all DA should look the same, but my IF will look different then his and such. killersquid
I painted mine Orange and Blue. No grey or metallic. Except on weapons and some details in gold. Devon M
I think grey makes a nice color because there are so many details on the models that the grey won't detract from the other colors and make it look muddled. Commander Remiel
The best GK I have seen used the IA article as a base (shown in black armour) and were painted in a very dark grey colour (verging on black). It was not a metal colour but very flat. They looked great. Planning to do something similar when I finally get to my GKs (sometime next century at my current pace). If I remember correctly, they were posted somewhere here, on B&C. Might even have them bookmarked. Will have check later (at work).
