Space wolf seeking help

Hi, I am playing SW and I love the inquisisition theme, having them along, but I was not so impresed when I looked in the Codex

I particulary liked the idea of the demon hoasts but at 85 points they seemed to die a lott. Is this because the list is from an old 4th edition, or am I missing something?

The sniper assassin looked cool, but my scout snipers just have more firepower for the same cost. What do you think are the moast viable options in the deamon hunter book? :-)

The typical use for DH allies is access to an Inquisitor with some Mystics in his Retinue which enables you to shoot at deep strikers. I think this would be really interesting with a unit of Long Fangs, since you have so many weapons in that squad.

For Assasins, I use a Callidus in my WH army and I find her to be invaluable. She can clean out 5 man tactical squads sitting on objectives and 'A word in your ear' can play havoc with opponents during deployment. Heck, even stuffing a tank into terrain means a 1/6 and then 1/6 chance to immobilize which is roughly 30%.

The Vindicare can be interesting, especialy taking out those Power Fists or other annoying special weapons, but they do tend to underperform.

Another option are IST which enable you to get a really cheap tank hunting unit. As for Daemonhosts, they tend to be too random to be relied on but they can be realy fun and do some interesting things. For example, rolling reknit for the power at the right time can be brutal and they have a chance to end up with 10+ attacks on the charge. At the same time, they could also reknit at fullwounds and then be instant killed by a powerfist (hence the randomness!).

For allying into another Imperial army, here are the best options.

* DH Inquisitor or Inquisitor Lord. Kit this guy out for deep strike defense. Give him a retinue including a multi-melta servitor and two mystics and be sure to give him a transport. Either buy him a dedicated Rhino or Chimera from the DH codex or let him steal one of your own Rhinos or Chimeras. Park in the midfield and/or near your most important assets, fire the MM out the top hatch, and prevent anything from dropping close by. If taking the I-lord, consider a psychic hood, as it has an unlimited range.

* ISTs. One of the most points-efficient and useful Troops in all of 40K. Take only as a unit of 5 with 2 melta guns. And, as with the Inquisitor (above), be sure to provide a transport. They're scoring units but cheap enough to sacrifice in case you really need to slag a tank or put wounds on an MC.

* GKTs. Still the game's best terminators. Even more killy than Vulkanized TH/SS termies, but otherwise use as you would any other assault terminator unit. They're just better!

* Sisters of Battle. Like ISTs, Sisters Troops units are extremely cost-effective and potent. And again, as with ISTs, give them 2x meltas and a transport. Whether you choose ISTs or Sisters for this role depends on how many points you're willing to spend and what you really want. ISTs are cheap and disposable. Sisters are "inexpensive", but do cost significantly more. On the other hand, you get a more durable unit -- superior armour save, more models -- and if you get the Sister Superior, a Faith Point, too.

I wouldn't recommend any of the assassins, even the good ones like the Callidus and the Eversor. The Vindicare is, IMHO, awful, and the Culexus just as bad. Just avoid them.

Sisters ar exactly on emore point than Stormtroopers at 11 points. Stormtroopers have some different weapon options like plasma guns and grenade launchers. They also come with krak grenades. Sisters get a better armor save, access to heavy flamers, faith and 1 more point of leadership for their cost difference. Transport options can also change the mix a little as the Stormtroopers can have a Chimera or Rhino. The Sisters can only have a Rhino.

Sisters ar exactly on emore point than Stormtroopers at 11 points.

But you are required to buy at least 10 Sisters, as opposed to only having to buy 5 ISTs. So your investment is going to be, at a minimum 60 pts more for the Sisters than for ISTs. Sometimes, those 60 pts are hard to come by.

Depending on how much you want to freak people out with having a unit they know nothing about, you could always take a single IST choice from the WH Codex, take a Priest and assign it to the unit (which really doesn't hamper their role that much, note a WH Priest is different than an IG Priest), then you get access to Arco-flagellants as an Elites choice. Also I still feel the Death Cult Assassins are far more useful than most people seem to think, they've always served me well.

I've found my Vindicare highly situational. Against some lists, he's a godsend.. like say, an IG list where you systematically snipe every single officer on the table one a turn :) No more orders is highly useful. Or a list that depends on a particular librarian or something hiding in a unit, say of Sternguard. Or when there's only two models that might be able to touch your Land Raider. Things like that.

On the other hand, some lists he's almost useless... like say a Tyranid or Ork horde army. Or when there's 4 Dreads rolling up your left flank :)

Most of the Assassins are like this.. there are many situations they're great, many they suck.

I read the book after I'd posted that. I have another one, the eversores special rules say he always counts as stationary when firing his pistol, and in brackets it explicitly states he can fire twice, would this still be the case?

The WH FAQ advises that an Eversor's pistol uses current rules for pistols; however, the DH FAQ makes no such distinction. As such and per RAW, the DH Eversor can "Fast Shot" his pistol if he does not move that turn.

Yet one more reason to to take that DH Inquisitor Lord + retinue as an Imperial ally.

It is just that I feel the space wolfs are very good at what they do already. The rune priest can deal with deeep strike units, flying and hovering with his ice storm. And the elite scout's that can be depløyed form all table edges is just amasing.

Perhaps the grey knight terminatours are good. The SW are good, but only at 33 points (or the 21 with the bolter withouth the armour)

Basically, yes. During 4th Edition it was harder to target daemonhosts if something else like a death-cult assassin was there to screen them, because of target priorities. Most armies also had slightly less attacks and less shots, and therefore forced the daemonhost to make less saves.

In any and all cases, doing well with a daemonhost and letting it survive a whole game is entirely based on lucky rolling, so you can get Re-knit when it loses wounds or Teleport when it's in trouble, and stuff like that.

The Vindicare is far better than any other sniper type in the game because you can actually snipe individuals.

Telion puts the vindicare to shame. IIRC, Telion can even place his Bolter shot on two different Targets...

Using the Vindi's wound on 2+ shot is just asking for you to roll a 1 to hit (or to wound..). I've lost count of all the times that's happened (I tend to stick one in for Apoc, as I have the mini. But he still sucks.)

About the only thing the vindicare is good for, is popping a Monolith. That's a joy to behold.

Again, just pray not to roll a 1 to hit.

Edit:

I wouldn't ally in GKT to the SW. For just a few pooints more than a GKT you can either get S5 Power Weapons, or a 3++ Save. But if you want to run Temries, Take Logan, and get scoring Termies. The SW aren't Fearless (unless you lose Bjorn), but if you use Logan or Arjac you can make them the much more impressive Stubborn.

Actually, the only time I would consider using GKT is for a uber, hard hitting, look how crazy we can make this unit kind of thing. By sticking them in a LRC with Ragnar.

No one would want to face a unit that hits on I5 wth S7 Power Weapons and +d3 attacks on the charge.

Oh and add a Wolf Priest in there as well with Prefered Enemy.

As long as you can get that LRC to it's target, you can bet whatever it is is gonna die!
