Ranwulf
So, I'm a newbie coming to W40k and I'm interesting in playing Space Marines, but in CC. But the thing is, I don't know which one to choose, I mean, I know that Blood Angels are Berserkers, and that Emperor's Champion buffs every BT, but what about Space Wolves, what so special about them? I really like their Fluff, after all, I love wolves, but I'm also interest playing a good CC army, so can you help me? Duke Corwin
Space Wolves are a solid CC army with a twist. They have counter attack so Grey Hunters, for example, can shoot rapid fire bolters on their own turn to thin the enemies ranks then, if the enemy assaults them, they can roll a leadership test to gain an extra attack. Add in the fact that they carry bolt guns, bolt pistols and CCWs and you have a well equipt space marine. Thunderwolf cavalry are also very strong in CC. They have fleet and a long charge range and deal crushing damage. Skyclaws with a wolf priest are very good CCers too. You have lots of choices. Wolfguard can be geared up for all kinds of CC power and can be added to other units for extra CC power. And the HQs are really strong too. All in all the Space Wolves are a solid army if you like to fight up close. hendrik
we're more a close quartre army then a CC army, what sources do you have available for the fluff i highly recommend you do a quick searchy after "why should i join the wolves" or similar, it's been discussed thousand times=) until then i guess i could let you have a little sip of my ale, but only a little one! I agree with this, close combat specialists are the Blood Angels and possibly the Templars, we're more the guys you'd expect to call on during urban fighting because of our flexibility in the fighting. Whats special about the Wolves though is the sense of camaraderie which we emulate here in the Fang. The Wolves don't take themselves too seriously, they know how to enjoy themselves but are still highly dedicated and loyal warriors. Also we don't have to worry about the Codex Astartes, we do pretty much whatever we feel like. Jonas Stromclaw
Why should you join the wolves? 1) Flexible army lists that focus on close up and personal combat. 2) Awesome models and modeling opportunities. 3) Cool special kit like Thunderwolves, frost axes, and wolf claws. 4) Friendly brothers here on the b&c, even if there are a lot of awful jokes ^_^ 5) We have wolves and ALE!!!!! Do I have to spell it out for you? While we don't have to be close combat armies like the blood angels and black templars we can be a close combat army to rival either of the previously mentioned. Even if you don't choose us, have an ale on me. Bartender! Grey Mage
6) Space Marines who havent lost their humanity. 7) A lovable independant streak. 8) Compelling fluff and backstory that goes from the beggining of the imperial timeline. 9) A balanced army with its own quirks. 10) The most flexable troops in the game. 11) The ability to put your men down on the table and see heroes. Madsakre
1a) The new wolf codex offers a bit of everything. The fenrisian wolves can be used like Hormagaunts, the thunderwolves are amphetamine crazed, thin armed bloodcrushers(but with access to high power cc weapons) 2a) The grey hunters are one of the best troop choices in the game, only contested by Chaos space marines(because of their marks) Long fangs are also one of the better units in our army range. they are incredibly cheap, and are beyond compare the best support fire you could ask for. Wolf guards can be kitted for most tasks, they are fairly cheap and can really deliver the package. 3a) Ragnar, njal and rune priests in general are incredibly awesome characters to lead your army. Ragnar is great for you if you want to make a Berzerker assault, i tend to call them blood wolves when ragnar leads them, due to the ferocity. Njal brings so much flavor to the whole game, because of master of storms, odin is very, very angry. ------ If you want a "real" berzerker army, go either Chaos space marines, or wait for the blood angels codex(we all hope the best for our brothers) --- Also, chech out the codex: codex ^^ There are some really funny army composition possibilities in there, and lotsa fuel for powergaming(vulcan anyone?) -- Best regards -Mads Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/185408-thinking-about-starting-sw-army/#findComment-2192795 Share on other sites
Ranwulf
Cool!!! Thanks for the replies guys! One thing tho, a Drop Pod Space Wolves Army can use that Ragnar Furious Charge combo? Grey Mage
Cool!!! Thanks for the replies guys! One thing tho, a Drop Pod Space Wolves Army can use that Ragnar Furious Charge combo? What you transport him in has nothing to do with ragnars rules- though it should be noted that Ragnars company is known to excell amongst SWs as a Drop-podder, and SWs as a whole are known to be experts at DP assaults. He wont be able to assault the turn he lands, but if you get enough units on the ground youll have the numbers to pull it off turn 2. rodgers37
How i started: (considering i had lots of money, and could buy stuff cheap.....) Codex Logan, Stormcaller, Canis 2 Space Wolf Packs 2 Wolf Guard packs 3 Drop Pods Then 30 Wolves..... (Golbin blits ones...) then 2 more Wolf Guard packs Battleforce..... Ragnar...... now i have bought 2 Dev squads, and a whirlwind, converted a chaos Pred (well taken the chaos bits off, and put wolve bits on....) and possibley 2 razorbacks soon.... But that was kinda more random than i wanted :S The best way to do it (which i what you are doing now, and what i'm doing in advance in planning my torney army......) is to find out what is best/needed, what you want and make lists, the problem with making lists in advance, means you can't actually play the army, without proxying a whole army :/ and even worse for you, your new..... but it gives you an idea....
