Fenrisian Wolves as wargear

wisdom like silence

My first thought upon seeing that they kept Fenrisian Wolves as wargear for SW characters was "awesome, ablative wounds!" However, neither codex nor BRB really says how these wolves are treated for close combat purposes.

You could argue that because they are purchased as part of the character's unit and they cannot leave him, they are treated as a retinue and can take wounds that were directed at the character in close combat. You could also argue that because the book never specifically says they're a retinue, they are treated as a separate unit in CC.

Since this really affects whether I play a Wolf Lord or not (I'm not normally a big fan of expensive easily killed characters, but a couple of ablative wounds changes that calculus a lot) I thought I'd throw this out there. I'm a bit surprised that I haven't seen any questions about this before, but maybe the answer is obvious and I just don't see it.

there has been talk along this line... but:

they way i see it the wolves are just treated as other members of the unit but need to stay near the guy they were bought for. they aren't exactly "ablative" wounds like they used to be. now you just follow the rules as they are in the HBRB for distributing wounds.

Right but are you treating the Wolf Lord himself as a separate unit from the wolves in CC? As an example, suppose my Wolf Lord and two wolves were fighting a Daemon Prince in CC. Would the Daemon Prince be able to direct attacks directly at the Wolf Lord as if he were an IC attached to another unit, or would I be able to take wounds dealt by the DP to the Wolf Lord on my wolves instead, as I would if they were a retinue?

Hmmm...cool I was thinking of building some thunder wolf riders but I was afraid they would die easy (even with wound asignement) but now I can buy a wolf lord, give him a thunderwolf and some wolf's and let him join the pack. Now when they get shot at with super heavy weaponds I can let the wolf's get sniped instead. Exelent!
I just read the entry for fen wolves and it says that when you buy them as wargear they are counted as seperate models with their own profiles under the classification beast. It also says if the Lord dies that the wolves leave play and drag his body away. I would think this to mean that someone may not use them as ablative wounds in CC.
