Zemke
Just getting back into Space Wolves after a very long hiatis - can Space Wolves get mastercrafted weapons, or is this strictly for vanilla marines? Thanks! Zemke Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/186141-mastercrafted/ Share on other sites
Grey Mage
Vanilla marines cant get Master-crafted stuff anymore either. Its strictly for Special Characters now really. nurglespuss
yep GW whacked it with a big stick, cause everything that could be master crafted (primarily plasma pistols) was, which kind of defeated the point. However, it would have been nice to see a '0-1' wargear option to master craft a single weapon for, oh I dunno, 15 pts. Grey Mage
Wich is funny... I rarely if ever took it, found it rather expensive. Just on the occaisional frostblade, or now and again on an Assault Cannon. nurglespuss
LOL and that was another part of the problem (and the reason I never collected space wolves for ages) the previous codex allowed for ridiculous 'extreme rules bending' like that (edit: re master crafted assault cannon), and unfortunately space wolves were never fun to play against! Now however, the codex is wonderfully balanced, characterful, and its like a new invention almost. Grey Mage
I see no reason why an Assault Cannon couldnt be lovingly and exquisitly crafted by a master artificer and then given to my Wolf Gaurd Battle Leader... its no different than Mastercrafting a Bolter. If they werent fun to play against, I feel that was likely because of your opponents, not the list. nurglespuss
@ Greymage: nope fraid not, the previous codex was unbalanced, and allowed for very 'cheesyesque' armies to be constructed, and remained that way for a long time. Wargear & bloodclaws in particular, but also characters in general. Most spacewolf armies I saw consisted of maxed out blood claws, land raiders, land sppeeders and dreadnoughts. Plus a ton of assault cannons. i.e. no fun to play against. I blame the codex, because now the space wolves armies I've come up against are far more balanced/characterful. I still say that master crafting a heavy weapon was a ridiculously bad interpretation of the rules. It was certainly in the 'disalowed' box at our club. But to finish on a positive, I love the new codex. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/186141-mastercrafted/#findComment-2201178 Share on other sites

But to finish on a positive, I love the new codex. I can honestly say then that it was your opponents- few if any lists that spammed bloodclaws made it through the Fang, and most of those were from Jeske. Most of the Lists I saw had a 3:1 ration of Grey Hunters to Bloodclaws. I myself have two squads of them.... and one of those is with jump packs . As opposed to six Grey Hunter Squads.... just finishing up number 7 *constructed, I only have two fully painted to my standards, third in the works*. And I cant think of a single reason that mastercrafting a heavy weapon would be dissallowed- you buy the HQ the weapon, you pay the points for mastercrafting... its done. Not even close to the power of just having Vulkan in your list. If the Wolf Lists youve seen recently are more flavorful, perhaps its the codex... perhaps its new players, or people with a smaller model selection- or maybe just that nerfbat that bloodclaws got hit with registered in the thick skulls of the nimrods you saw before. nurglespuss
LOL, most of the players I've played have alwsya used space wolves, they've just made more characterful lists now, thanks to the new codex. I still think master crafting a heavy weapon was wrong (it doenst say it 'can' be applied to a heavy weapon, and I don't accept that as the reason 'that doesn't mean I can't!'. Master crafting for every other codex made sense, it was just space wolves players that took it too far. But Like I said, now things are good, blood claws arent stupidly good anymore, and have been recentered rather than toned down (you need a few to be any good). Characters are more characterful, and the wargear is far more manageable. Hfran Morkai
To be honest I think the main issue lay with giving a WGBL a heavy weapon, multiple wounds, solid in combat and BS5. But they've changed that now. I think I used it once for giggles. I was also more of a Hunter fan, especially those two power weapons.
