New Space Wolves Player

So. I watched a 1500 point Space Wolves v Codex Marines at a veteran's night on Thursday at my local GW. I was hooked

The actual models the Space Wolves player was playing with were awesome, painted in a dark grey, rather than the normal Space Wolves grey.

The theming of the army really appealed to me aswell. He was playing a mainly assaulty army. I believe it was:

1 Long Fangs squad with Razorback

1 LRC

1 Lone Wolf

A couple of Terminator squads(I'm unsure as to how many there were)

And a character(think it was Ragnar)

Whichever character it was he had, I remember at one point he got 13 attacks, because of a special rule he has, and took out about 6 from a 10 man squad.

Anyway, I bought the codex, and I've skimmed over it. I want to build a core force...1000 maybe 1500. But I want it to be very different to my other marine army, which is mechanized with a good amount of troops. I want my Space Wolves to be themed as an elite close combat army, something that could be really fun.

So, would be great to hear some advice from my fellow sons of Russ, inluding any other advice for a new Space Wolves player. What should I take? How should I play it? What should I know?

++Edit++

For the record, the Space Wolves won pretty damn convincingly, after tearing apart the codex marines.

The 1 with 13 attacks would be Canis.

If you want to start a SW army than i guess a good start would be something like this.

Runepriest

9 Greyhunters +gear

Rhino

10 Greyhunters +gear

Rhino

You could chamge Greyhunters for Bloodclaws and or the rhinos for Dropppods if you want (if you take the sw Starter set you also get 5 SW scouts), but personally i dont see the point in doing that.

Even if you want a elite close combat oriented force you're still going to have to take two troop choices. So if you don't want GH or BC (which can be used as and are very good at close combat) as troop choices, then go Wolfwing. Get Logan Grimnar and use WolfGuard as Troops. Then you can use WG in PA for Troop choices and in TDA as Elite choices.

Either way I recommend getting the Battle force box set. You get one scout unit that are elites, a drop pod, and two Space Wolf packs that can be assembled as GH, BC or WG in PA. That is your basic force in one box. The price is also cheaper than buying them separately.

Personally I would go for two GH packs as troop choices or one GH and one BC, but you should design your army in a way that you enjoy playing it whether you win or lose.

That 13 attacks is likely just Saga of the Warrior Born- you get extra attacks each round equal to what you killed last round. Canis would only have 10 attacks against 10 guys after all.

Id say your best bet is to start out with something simple- two squads of Grey Hunters, and a Wolf Lord or a Rune Priest, and some Long Fangs. A Wolf Pack, Devastator Squad, Tactical Squad, for the troops that is, and the bits you need for your commander. Thatll get you a nice basis for a 500-750pts force, probly adding in a rhino and maybe a whirlwind for some diversity at 750.

Yes, but if he does not attack you in melee in his turn then you do not have any ekstra attacks in your own asoult phase again, right?

anyway, about what you asked: Use canis, he is cool and get a fast attack wolf choise. They are good in melee and you can hide canis in them as an IC and he rocks. The wolfes are also cheap.

Long fangs are exelent. You should get some grey hunters and put the in the razor back and use them co capture an objective.

Put some blood claws in a whino and have them asoult the enemy (you will like those.)

A lone wolf is cool.

Use some WG and put them into the GH and the blood claws for more weapon ptions at a cheaoer price, and use the rest as terminatours. Eather you need a DP or a LR to have transport, or you can just foostlog. (With a range of asoult 24 this i perfectly good in a 1000 point game where the table tends to be small.)

If you have the points gets some more trops or some scouts.

Just my humble opinion.
