Best screening unit? How do you protect your HQ or crazy guy

So what's out best screening unit? rhinos? razorbacks? land raiders? fenrisian wolves?

 

How do you screen your units and how do you protect your characters? What tactics and what units do you put them in? Fenrisian wolf companions are allowed to discussed, that it the only wargear option that i am willing to let people to discuss.

 

So how do you proect your hq guys or your crazy thunder hammer guy? rhino running? podding etc

Put him in a LR, or attach him to a TWC squad.

 

If you're lucky, you can foot slog him behind a Dread.

 

Rhinos get popped too easily.

Mine is similar. Wolf Lord attached to 5 Wolf Guard in TDA, one of whom is Arjac, loaded inside a Crusader. The whole crew is outfitted for close quarters mayhem so the Crusader is tailored to their role.

The above is for large enough games where I can afford to run with this full unit (since the LRC is a dedicated transport the full WG pack, including the 5 in PA distributed to the GH packs, weighs in at 800 points). In smaller games the WG in TDA will sit out allowing the Lord to lead a GH pack which will accompany him in the LRC. Because I run all of my packs, the Wolf Guards are an exception, with minimal upgrades I should be able to take the LRC in most games below 1500 points. Since my Great Company is a mechanized company there is no footslogging to the front lines, everyone is in a tank, on a transport, or is a dreadnought.

I've footslogged an Iron Priest behind a dread on many occasions and it tends to save him and the dread for combat. For a bigger unit/combo I'd suggest a 15 man BC pack to scare the enemy and eat the shots... works for me at least :D just don't roll 1s on the Run roll for the BC and 6s for the unit being screened :D

I distract using big other scary things and putting them in front of my big scary HQ. Vindicators do a good job.

Considering I use a PA wolf lord that isn't geared to look like a fire magnet, he isn't often targeted so I just attach him to Wolf Guard squads (Storm Bolter/Power Weapon). Maybe add a nice little rhino in.

Add them to a squad? Usually GH but sometimes Thundercav or swiftclaws.

 

IC's running around on their own is a recipe for dead IC's.

i have my RP with a mall unit of wolfgaurd. the reason for this is because my RP loves to direct his terminator brother's cyclone missile launcher :).
