The biggest chapter?

After them, SW will surely be amongst the biggest. They have 12 companies, almost all of them are around 100 and 200 (Grimnar's one counting more than 200) and some other exiled/outcast/rogue companies out there.

or Grey Knights....no'one knows how many there are besides the fact that they are non codex adherant.

ok the things mentioned may be true but i just have 1 point to make.

the Space Wolves have only ever had one successor chapter (losing 1000 marines) after the Horus Heresy.

so technically don't they have like 100,000 or so (i don't know the original size of the SW pre-heresy)

so SW are fecking huge!!!!!!!!!!

Athiair :cuss

From what I read the Space Wolves legion was one of the smaller legions. Part of the reason they didnt need to break up into a ton of successor chapters. But I think Russ was tied with El Johnson for second most systems conquered. ( don't remeber that last point exactly) Horus i thought being the first.

ow, they have about 3-4000. but they aren't really a space marine chapter arguably.

How many?!?! LOL, no grey knights are elite, and aegis suits are incredibly difficult to manufacture, as are nemesis weapons etc. I would say there are probably a chapters worth, at the very very very most!

Actually... 3-4k depending on the year is about right. Theres a little less than a chapters worth in each segmentum....

What do you base that on? :)

Its stated in the DH codex that each brother captain leads between 100 and 300 GKs, and that each segmentum has a Grand Master, and that the Grand Masters rotate who is on the counsel of the inquisition in the Terran sector- its seen as a burden. It lists a little over a thousand in one segmentum IIRC, and I cant see any GM being positioned over a single group instead of several... so its a rough estimate.

see even the inquisition and GKs commit the hersey thought unthinkingable. lol Dorn would be sooooo peed when he learns of this treachery. lol, the emperor trusts this new chapter not to turn heretical and agrees all the others who stuck by him ( except DA ) should be split.......

thanks

well what about the books, in the first one when ragnar, sven etc arrived from russvik to the fang, it dose say that there are many non assigned BC's who could be there for years waiting, could this suggest that they are hiding their numbers for the final days?

If I'm correct they have to order PA's from mars so if they ordered too many, would that not set off alarm bells with the inqusition??? iron priests can only maintain Pa's not manufracture them.

me's athinks they we have a larger than disclosed chapter bordering on legion size, as we don't abide to the codex astartes structure...

This fluffy argument will never die nor be truly settled unless GW decides to.

I always leaned towards the "larger than believed to be" side of the debate. There are wolves who have wandered so far away from the fang they never returned. Then you have some who are still in the Eye of Terror from when Russ disappeared ten thousand years ago. There are several warbands of renegade wolves or wolves who have come into service of Chaos warlords. Many Blood Claws remain at the Fang for years before they are adopted into the Chapter's rank and file, I don't think they recruit according to losses but according to tradition and "as many as we can get" mentality. Plus the recent codex offered a single sentence possibly enlightening us on how the size of each company can very greatly. Not to mention that Space Wolves are more willing to salvage trophies from their enemies so who is to say they don't take traitor armor that hasn't totally succumbed to the warp and cleanse it for reuse? I doubt that Wolves would be entirely willing to be dependent on the Imperium to protect it, so I would even dare to claim their forges are capable of more than simple repairs on armor. After all, can the Iron Priests not forge rune blades and frost weapons, thralls and cyberwolves?

Edit *Double Post*

One interpretation that everyone seems to be leaving out of this 'largest' chapter debate, is that bothe black templars and space wolves have been divided up, though they are 'technically' large entities, they are also autonomous 'chapterish' sized forces, that act independently with their own leadership.

So for me, the space wolves 'great companies [read chapters]' may be larger (Logans/Ragnars) or smaller than other chapters out there.

Similarly, i would expect High Marshal Hellbrecht to have the 'largest' crusade.

Its just a different way of dividing the chapter, but maintaining a unites front (think an 'umbrella' type corporation).

Also, for me, where youhave 2 wolf lords that are bitter enemies/rivals etc. I could see their forces clashing, if working together/arriving together etc...

Remember the Wolves deployed their entire chapter to fight the entire chapter of thousand sons during the heresy. That epic battle most likely decimated their ranks somewhat.

I doubt they had that many Marines left afterwards. Certainly more than the Ravenguard or Iron Hands but allot less than the Ultramarines.
