Space Wolf converting help

Hello all, Its been a few months since i posted here.

I have been dying to make a space wolf army since my uncle introduced me to the 40k universe by having me read the first Space wolf novel.. I originally made a dark angels army (believeing in my haste that it was better to get regular marines, rather than take the long way and buying some wolf models)

but now that there are people jumping on the bandwagon these new models are everywhere and i can finally build my company.

I was thinking of a very nordic feeling army with many axes, storm shields and thunderhammers, because they look BAD a$$. I also plan on having the army focused mainly on wolf guard with a few units of grey hunters and long fangs to back them up (of course blood claws too for kicks) i love the idea of the elite and arrogant wolf guards and lords mocking the bloodclaws skill in mid-combat, and challenging various opponents to single combat duels, and would like to reflect that nature in them.

however with my lack of skills i was wondering if anyone could give me some simple conversion tips i could use to make an original and fun/fluffy army)

any help anyone could have would be greatly appreciated

I have never used GS and wouldnt mind some tips also. Want to start using it but have no clue what tool does what and how you shape the GS. Everything I have read says what to do but assumes you know the basics of modeling. I didnt mean to hijack the thread but i also figured it was along the same lines as the OP's questions.

Thank

So what do you already have that you'd like to convert? Otherwise with the Squad box now available, you can build your choice of Blood Claws or Grey Hunters with plenty of "wolfy" bits left over to add to or convert other models.

For general GS tips you can look here: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?showforum=63

Or you could do a search in this section for "conversions", "fur" or whatever you like that may turn up a tutorial of what you might be seeking.

Here are some that I converted. When using GS be sure to keep your sculpting tool wet, that will keep the tool from sticking. I use a dental pick, xacto blade and an occasional toothpick. Just go wild, things will kind of shape themselves. If it's not what you want, keep at it until you like the results.

I have some limited exp. with GS - patience, patience, patience!

Thats really the key. Rather mix small amounts, if you have left overs roll them into a small ball and store in the freezer - use that as your base / filler / bulking GS and then a thinner (more yellow) mix for softer slower curing .

I believe that Grey Stuff (as opposed to Green Stuff) keeps a better edge - but I have yet to try it.

In terms of a cool conversion idea- I was planning a mass SW conversion to make them mirror the Teutogen Guard (love those models) - they mostly have hammers if I recall!

Something so basic I hesitate to call it a conversion is cutting the bolt/plasma pistol off an arm and replacing it with a bolter, then put a chainsword in the other hand - this pretty readily sets your troops apart from both bloodclaws and codex marines.

To give them a...I don't know the right adjective, but a cool feel, try using Chaos Warriors (from WFB) heads, with the horns cut off. That might add to the look you're going for.

I'll post a link to some of my wolves, most of them have at the most very simple conversions (weapon swaps), and mostly its just kitbashing, but done right I think they came out looking both wolfy and good.

"Converting" through kitbashing is all about vision - look through GW's range of plastic minis (WFB and 40k), all their marines (chaos and loyalist), and see what parts would look good together to get the look you want. If there's enough good parts in a set of marines buy that set, and throw some wolfy goodness from the new Wolf Pack box on them. I think a lot of the chaos parts make them look a little more aggressive, while even just mixing in a regular box of tactical marines can get you some varied poses and bits, so you don't have an army with the same 5 legs all over. If its just a few things (the heads from the Chaos Warriors, for instance, or the arms from some of the dwarf boxes have a lot of axes and hammers) you can get them from a bits seller.

That's my take on building a good looking army with minimal cutting and GSing - I'm a noob though. The pros here will tell you how its really done.
