Hey everyone,

long time reader, first time poster.

This is Bernd from Germany. English is not my primary language, so please bear with me if I tear it apart unwillingly ;-)

With the release of the "new" Wolves, I followed my heart (and the smell of beer...) and became a member of the Fang.

One of the characters that allures me is of course Ragnar Blackmane, and the old mini really... well.. lacks. So I am currently building my own Ragnar.

First impression:

Yes, the Topknot is still missing (just didn't fit). And the blade will be a bit longer (still have to cut it).

Base was made with a piece of cork, plus snow made of Natron, Glue and Water. I really like the way the snow turned out.

Anyway, just wanted to share the process (will post more pics until Ragnar is done), and share a beer and a belch with everyone here.

Laters, and Cheers from Germany,

Bernd

Edit:

Ragnar is done: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...t&p=2213729

It's looking good, and I hope to see more pics soon. Just have to say, usually snow is the last thing to be placed. You work in an unconventional way. Very intriguing.

So welcome to the Fang, your in the right place if you like beer so much!

I second that. Already painted the legs, but the rest is not even primed? Well, at least it looks very good! Keep it up.

I have to agree, it's unconventional for me too. But I wanted to test the snow, and also knew I would use these legs with the pelt. The rest is currently fixed lightly with an adhesive. Until today I didn't knew exactly what parts I would use except for the legs. So thats why they aren't primed yet. But this will change soon.

Now that I am writing it, I am parallel working on a "Bjorn The Fell Handed". And guess what part is finished:

Go figure...

<_<

nothing wrong with being a leg-man :tu:

Looking good so far, I like the ragnar conversion, and I'm not sure extending the sword is such a good idea... Racners swar is a helluva lot thinner than that plastic one, and I think thats why it works....

a very nice conversion indeed especially without greenstuff. have you pinned any of it into place? or are you using just stock parts?

how are you going to do the top knot? (this would be a good chance to practice your greenstuff skills)

your English is good, and welcome to the fang brother! have an ale on me

So far I have only used a bit putty to see which parts I would use. Basically only stock parts from 3 different sets. The normal Space Wolves frame, the accessories frame (backpack & rear torso), and the wolf paw is from the terminator sprue (using the big fur with the wolfhead for Bjorn, and the paw for Ragnar).

The topknot was cut off and I will probably just glue it back in another angle or position.

I'll try to use as few green-stuff as possible, but a bit will be needed for the paw I guess :o

Cheers,

Bernd

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey everyone,

I finally finished my version of Ragnar, and I am quite happy with how he turned out. There were a few things I hadn't done before (i.e. Snow base...), but it was quite fun...

Only needs a finishing layer of matt varnish, and he is done.

Details are exactly as I want every other mini of my army done. Not too much (I still want to play with my son from time to time, so an hour or 2 for painting is max a day), but good enough that I like looking at him ;-)

Okay, back to Bjorn...

Cheers,

Bernd

Nice work snowstorm looks great.

I do however somewhat agree with Rodf, it's not that it looks tiny, but rather Ragnar is well identified with his "longer" chain blade that is a frost weapon. I think you will find that you can easily splice another chain sword into that one to give it extra length. The wolf icon on the sword also shortens its look. Just use a nice straight cut at the base above the wolf icon cut, insert a different full length chainsword of the same double sided chainsword and it will look very nice.

Vrox

I can understand that the pics in both 3rd and 4th edition codex show Ragnar with a chainsword, but it considered a frost blade and the description of when he actually received it in the book Wolfblade seems to point towards a smooth frost blade versus a chained frost blade.

If I was to make a Ragnar, I would probably use the sword from Ezekial to represent the frost blade.

I'm not sure if the books are worth ignoring. Right now I am reading the first Omnibus, and whether you use them or not as background is probably up for each one of us.

Personally I tend to take all the books and codex fluff as stories. 2 people will always tell a story a bit different, and not even GW has all the details right. (The Omnibus has Ragnar with a beige / white pelt, and the new codex uses brown for his pelt)

In the end this Mini is how I see Ragnar. My main concern was the posing. I didn't want him to look as flat as the original Ragnar mini. Also I wanted him to have as many pelt-pieces as possible, to bulk him up a bit. I think that worked, too. The frostblade was no easy choice. I thought about a runed power sword, but decided against it. I also thought about making the chainblade longer, but that would maybe look a bit slim. So I used a normal chainblade, but painted the teeth first shadow grey, and drybrushed it with space wolves grey and skull white, so I get a frost look on it. It's not so obvious in the pics, but it looks good when seen here on the mini ;-)

Maybe everyone sees Ragnar different, but this is how I see him, and I have to say that I am pleased with the outcome :-)

On another note: Sooner or later a new Ragnar mini will surely come out, and then I might just use this one for the Wolf Guard.

Cheers,

Bernd

Nice interpretation, while it's not a dynamic pose, the base and the bulking out with fur pelts definitely gives the model a much more commanding presence, and while to me he doesn't immediately scream Ragnar, I know that he's at the very least a Wolf Guard Battle Leader or a Wolf Lord.

To shed some light on the chainsword. I had considered that very sword for my own Ragnar conversion, and I ditched it very quickly, because of the hilt. The entire weapon from hilt bottom to top of the blade is no shorter than an assault marine's chainsword, but look at the hilt of the Space Wolf version. That wolf head makes the hilt look like it extends further than it actually does, so that the hilt appears to be the same length as the blade (so more like a chain-dagger or some such).

Whether you like the look of it or not, is your call. Aesthetics is always subjective, and you'll always end up with people on either side of the fence (and always invariably some on the fence itself).

As for the rest of the model, I would recommend you paint the eyes, the teeth, the gem on the backpack, and try and define the edges/creases/recesses where armor plates meet (in particular the legs, where the knee plates meet the lower leg greaves and thigh plates.
