Only one Drop Pod

I mean, if you only had one drop pod:

1) Wolud you use it or will you simply leave it at home until you buy a couple more as alone it is worthless.

2) If it has a real use, which unit would you put in it?

This is because I'm debating between one drop pod or one Razorback to backup my Rhinos

I currently have two Rhinos, a predator, a Vidicator, a Land Raider and 3 Land Speeders as my vehicle pool. I can't buy both at the same time, so what would you do? I'm tempted towards the pod but I can't decide.

Any advice?

what are you looking to do? what are in your army needs the most beefing up?

yep, a solo Pod without support, better have some serious defensive power and that means expensive point wise.

I love my solo Pod. 4 WG in TDA SS/CF SS/WC CM/PW CM/WC add Arjac to this and you have enough ugly to hold their own against any list. Just keep your options open during deployment, if you need to put a solo DP unit on the table and drop the pod empty or drop it empty and put your unit in reserve.

I have also had some good success with a solo Pod containing a Dread with AC/HF + WTN

this is how mine tends to work. just i ensure that there are going to be bigger problems in my enemies face to make it so a dred on the flank is not the prime target.

The pod is superflous- what are you planning on putting in it?

With a Mech army, Id probly take one of the following:

A Vendread with MM and HF- good against everything, pretty survivable. Expensive.

Fire Support GH pack- either 2x Melta or 2x Plasma+Pistol. Scoring.

WGTDA- Expensive as all getout, but a good way to get them into battle on your enemies flank.

Frankly though, since you already have a mechanized company going Id just stick with it and get the razorback kit- wich can also be another rhino if you conveniently forget to glue the hatches down. If you get battleforce, you might trade it to someone else, or keep it around as an ace in the hole for odd games.

I played a game with 5 Drop Pods yesturday...it didn't work...

i had 3 squads of Grey Hunters (with Njal) and they came down first...i was playing Eldar, and Njal died from 2 physic test fails (forgotten what its called..) then seer's kill one squad, avatar killed a drop pod, Dire Avengers killed another squad (oh with some help from dark reapers)

i then failed to get my 2 wolf guard squads down.....

he then killed the rest, so i lost, (i think if you have nothing on the board, your reserves die?) so it didn't go well.....

1 DP can be useful depending on what you use it for and how it helps the rest of your army.

You can drop suicide squads to remove threats

If you have a mechanized army and are afraid of infantry based heavy weapons...remove the threat with 10xWG + 10xCombi-plasma + Drop pod.

You can drop a dreadnaught as bait

Standard dread + MM has a decent chance of destroying AV14 and it will draw a lot of AV firepower b/c nobody wants it to hit them in CC. While this is happening the rest of your army can advance relatively safely

If you upgrade it to a venerable it has a decent chance of surviving (forcing rerolls on damage table is worth the points)

The best part is 1 DP is guaranteed to land on turn 1 pretty much where you want it. Unless something goes catastrophically wrong you will be within 12" of your target

Do a search for posts by DV8. He's got some good battle reports on here, and he uses a single Drop Pod in his mechanized force to good effect.

1 or 3 are the best

And if you go 3 there should be a mix/match of unit roles so you can swap who comes in first and who comes in later....allows flexibility if opponent keeps everything in reserves etc.

I'm using between 4 and 5 in my armies these days. Same cost as a Rhino and less legwork. Only catch is they can clutter a bit if the other guy is corner-camping.

I actually prefer 2, having the second in reserve means it can land where I need it at the moment affecting the battle after it has unfolded a bit. A note here is I also run a WS pack with WG that also provides support to the poding force.

For a 2 pod force you need one that can deal with anything and another that is ranged or an objective sitter such as 10 GH with PG. In this case if the opening deployment and first turn does not go the way you expect you will not have to drop your main pod, rather either drop an empty pod or take an early objective using the pod as cover.

My current force has a 4 WG in TDA and 2 with CM in PA, the other pod contains a dread EA/HF AC WTN and his DP has a DWML. Great against guard or flanking a horde list, which are becoming the norm at most tournaments as people are over compensating their lists towards the still popular mech lists.
