Bit built Grey Knights

Recommended Posts

I had a bunch of 10 year old scrap assault marines in a box, with badly stripped red paint.

I play Daemonhunters, and didnt have any GK's in my force at all, mainly becuase I don't like the models very much (and initially was playing radical, long story)

these things led to -

The only purchase made for these guys was the NFW pack from GW, everything else was in various bits boxes.

I'm wondering what the community take on them is. I know there are flaws, but hopefully there are some good points too ;)

Excellent! I have been looking at going with all DIY Grey Knights (that are actually grey) for some time. This adds to some of the ideas I have for building them. Thanks for the pictures. And if you build anymore, particularly Termies, please post them. And notes on construction if you did anything like converting parts, etc.

Thanks Guys,

I appreciate the comments :D

Valius, yeah I always struggle with the helmet debate, but I think a few helmetless guys allows you to show the character of your force, and to tie different troops in together across armour types and colours, most of my force (with slightly odd, almost radical fluff) have a bald/beardy/braided appearance and I wanted these guys to share that.

Isubmit some of my IST's for consideration on the point :)

Remiel, If you want to see unpainted pics/WiP's of these guys I have some on my blog (linked below) If you like I can run down what I did, In fact I've had a hard time choosing which one should be the Justicar, and seeing as 8 is optimal for PAGK teams I might make 1 more.

If I do I'll document it better and post it as a guide(ish)

Devon, there are a ton more pics on my blog, but i'm more than happy to post some close ups here, though I wanr you, some of them aren't as pretty clos up :(

A disclaimer, some of these guys appear to have "tide marks" or bald spots in the washes on the photography, that's actually not visible irl, and has something to dow ith the reflective properties of two of the different inks/washes i use in combination with my daylight lamps. so they arent that ugly irl.

an admission, some of the gs work reallt IS that bad, :) the first "stormbolters" made look significantly rougher than the later ones likewise some of the work on the chests.

but hey, for tabletop I'm okay with it, and these guys were essentially "free" :P

I'm planning on some termies, i'll take a bit more care with those :)

wow im sure i comented on this when i first saw it :S

its looking really good, probably the best plastic knights ive seen for the simple reason that you havent over complecated it, we can see they are knight but they arnt filled with uneccissary things further showing us the point.

i also like how they are more individual, they seem to each have their own character.

well done

Well... I'll be honest as I must. These are the best "conversion" Grey Knights I've seen yet. That being said I see two points to improve upon.

1) The knight style helm, It appears very wedge shaped which I understand is kinda the point but I think you should have flattened it out rather than having the large wedge ends for ears. I'm not sure if that's very clear but I can't come up with better terms at the moment.

2) Would love to see them spruced up a bit. More colors and heraldry befitting the Imperium's True Knights. They feel very Bland to me. I've always loved the Grey Knights accents and trinkets that make them truly unique on the table-top.

Cheers,

Hi everyone, thankyou so much for your comments.

let me try and respond to a couple of people directly...

Grand Master Tchezzarus - the storm bolters are quite simple. two bolt pistols, with grip and magazine removed sights filed off, filed flat on the soon-to-be internal faces, glued together and attached to the arm. the major gaps are then filled, and a "cowl" is GSed over the weapon, with varying degree of sucess  i then re-attach the magazines (also glued together) but on the side. - the final touch is the front sight from a bolter attached centre top.

I hope that makes sense, If i do another one of these guys I'll document the process a little better.

Inquisitor =D= - thanks for both the praise and constructive comments, let me adress them

on the subject of the helm. I found most sucess with corvus pattern helms, but only had 2, I subbed in two champion helms, and the last i had to have much more "block fronted" than i wanted because i didnt honestly have enough nose to shape it properly.

i take your point about the width absolutely.

on the subject of "bling"

theres a few things at play here, I was working entirely with bitz i already had. - now that's not to say i didnt have a few more purity seals etc lying around, but - case in point - i didnt have enough deathwatch pads for everyone and so on.

i do personally like a more realistic, grittier look to my guy so wouldnt have added too much more bling anyway

i did however want to add some script or text, but my GS-fu is simply too weak and i chickened out.

Anyone with any good tips on gsing text i would really appreciate a pm.

again, thanks everyone your words are appreciated.

Glad we can see eye to eye. :)

As for the "bling" mostly I was thinking of the usual red-white-black heraldry on the shoulder pad. I've always found it to be a good addition to an otherwise "bland" model. But its up to personal taste. Wish I could help you with the GS but I've little to no experience with it thus far. Maybe you could roll it out till its really thing scribble into it a little with a pencil or similar point and then use a hobby knife to cut them into purity seal shape? Idk.
