Scherdy
I'm a fairly new player to 40k and brand new SW player. I have sort of slowly started to acquire sets to start my new SW army and here is where I'm at: 10 Wolf Guard Terminators, 2 Wolf Pack boxes, and a Space Marine Battleforce (5 assault, 5 scouts, 15 marines and a rhino). I'm sort of overwhelmed by is one of the things that drew me to the SW...the possibilities of all the inidvidual options...blood claws, grey hunters, all the weapon options on the terminators... Since I'm basically brand new to 40k, what I would love your thoughts on are should I build an army list (with my very limited 40k knowledge that I'll probably want to tweak a lot later) first and then piece the army together based on that list? Do I just start putting them together based on what I think looks best? The sculpts are so great, this seems like the most fun :) If you have any ideas on where to begin so that I have a pretty well rounded army I'd love to hear your thoughts. What I want to minimize is putting the time in to build/paint my army and find I want to switch everything later. I'm dying to just start working on them! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/186735-advice-for-a-beginner-where-to-start-with-the-wolves/ Share on other sites
Karack Blackstone
Try looking in the Space Wolf Army Lists section at the top of the main page and see if any units stand out. Otherwise you'll have to read the codex and decide what works for you based on their entries and fluff. Thunderwolf Cavalry are pretty new, so they're being tested out to see how they do. Might be to your liking, might not. I favor a list that includes alot of dreads, but it suffers in other areas. Everything comes down to what you want to try, or try now versus later. Grey Mage
So the best place to start off with SWs is with our troops- Grey Hunters and Bloodclaws. Bloodclaws are trickier to use properly in 5th edition, so I reccomend taking the wolf packs and tac squad youve got and making 20-30 Grey Hunters out of them. Mix and match so they look good to you! 2 special weapons in each squad is best, and I reccommend matching weapons *ie 2 plasmarifles, 2 meltaguns, etc* for simplicity at the start- though flamer+melta isnt a bad one either. I wouldnt make all your Termies at once either, 3-5 of them will give you some good options, maybe even an HQ choice, and let you see wich weapon combinations work for you. Scouts... since youve got some, do well with a Meltagun, and either a couple plasma pistols or a couple powerweapons. I usually run a pack of five, melta+PW, for 100pts its a good steal, and can do a number on alot of squads. If your looking to expand then a few special weapon bits for your Hunters is a good idea, and another rhino *Always buy the razorback kit, it can easily be made to used as either* and maybe a devastator box for some Long Fangs. Loyalist Wolf
How about setting up a 1000 point game with a friend. Take a wolf lord and two grey hunter packs to get to know some basic units. Then pick one more thing, not for its stats or abilities, just for the love of it. Maybe Wolf Guard terminators striding like colossi across a snow swept plain, or your young and glory hungry blood claws, or snarling fenrisian or thunder wolves. The sons of Russ are heroic, noble and self sacrificing - you have to love your wolves and this game will come alive for you. There are many fine armies in 40k, played with skill, precision and enthusiasm. Wolves, my friend, are played for love. Niiai
To make an army good you need a certain unit and some sertain balancing. There is two ways to build a list with that in mind: Chose a hero and two troop units (GH in Rhinos!) you think are cool and build the rest of the army as back up. Or: Chose some units you realy think are cool (a double whirlwind?!) and build the rest of the list around making the list work. (Or just go for fluff (things you think look cool but arent necaceraly that good) and just play it. I would only recomend this if you play against anothe fluff player.") Night Runner
I think the advice given by Grey Mage is very sound and look in the army list section for a list you like. I suggest though, that when you do come to assembling your termies use magnets. WG are very flexible and have a variety of weapon choice and options. So if you don't want to break the bank and still have a wide selection of choice; go for magnets. Scherdy
Thanks for giving me a place to start. I've read the codex and have started through again. I'll take your advice and start some units of Grey Hunters with the tac squads and wolf packs as well as a few terminators. There are plenty of wolfy bits to do them all hopefully. I ordered a bunch of tiny rare earth magnets about a week ago by chance so that should work out great to give me more mileage out of my terminator models. Much appreciated for all the advice. Also, the tip about the razorback - makes perfect sense and something I never would have thought of until I had spent the money on both at some point and said..."wait a minute!!". :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/186735-advice-for-a-beginner-where-to-start-with-the-wolves/#findComment-2208491 Share on other sites
Grey Mage
It also works perfectly well for the Whirlwind... wich is why I have three whirlwinds ;). I love the buggers, great against hordes and never fail to make thier points back against marine types, sept necrons. But Necrons are always iffy. Wich is another tip of mine- go with things you feel are good. You might be wrong, fair enough but then again you might be right. Theres alot of really good combos I never see used because they arent the "right" way to do things. The wrong way has won me alot of tournaments, alot of memorable battles, and a few friends. Scherdy
Again, many thanks for the shared wisdom. I'm definitely looking to build an army I enjoy looking at, so picking models I like is always a major factor in deciding what to add next. After tearing into the wolf guard boxes I was a little disappointed that there is not a single cyclone missile launcher in there. I guess I just thought that it would be something that would at least throw us a bone and give us one per box. I should have done more research I suppose into what was on the sprue. I'm guessing the only place to get them without trading is ebay or the regular plastic terminator boxed set? Any other tricky marketing ploys GW pulled that I should put on my radar for bits and pieces I'll need to pick up by scouring ebay or putting out feelers in some trading threads? If you haven't already noticed, the only special weapons on the regular Wolf Pack sprues are the Plasma Guns. That means if you want meltas or flamers you have to get the vanilla Tactical Squad boxes....or go the ebay/trade route. The other options are to order a set of 5 meltaguns or the "old" wolf accessories sprue from GW's website, but those only get you meltas, not flamers. I'm thinking about ordering some of the "old" sprues from them because they also have the wolf pelt with the head on it, the backpacks with the wolf heads for the exhaust ports, and 1-handed axes instead of just the 2-handed ones on the Wolfpack sprue.
