Night Lords WIP Thread

Hey all,

I was originally going to do Word Bearers and some of you may remember the models that I did back in spring but I got a little aggravated with the red and wanted to paint a color that was a bit more relaxing to paint. I am a slower painter, so updates will be slow but I'll try and get this going and a steady pace, plus my local game store requires all models to have at least 3 colors and based in order to use their tables, so that should help. Anyway, here there are:

1. Squad I am working on, got them primed and I paint them without the backpacks and guns. I have a NL upgrade for every unit so I got the shoulder pads and heads for the army. I plan on using the NL heads in replacement of the heads that have horns with no texture because I don't care to paint them, just a preference.

2. This is the first guy I got started done minus the backpack and weapon. Sorry for the bad photo, I'll have better ones for when he's done and based.

3. Same as above form a different angle, the shoulder pad.

I'll try and get some better photos up later on today, had to hurry before work this morning. Thanks for looking, C&C always welcome.

Welcome brother there are to few of us Night lord players out there :P

right what blue did u use for the armour it looks great i can see where you have highlighted the edges of the armour overal a really GREAT job cant wait to see wat you post next :tu:

But there is one thing missin.... Lightning

@ Xavyer Jubal

Thank you, I will try and get better pics posted tonight, only had about 20 mins this morning before work.

@Loken86

Thank you as well. For the blue, all I did was paint Regal blue over a chaos black undercoat and was very careful to miss the recesses of the model, which I left black. Personally, I like the very dark shading look on my miniatures unless it's like bright colored 'Nid. For the highlight, I just used Ultramarines blue. The basecoat is very simply and quick so I put the work into the detail.

As far as the lighting, I am practicing free hand write now on cardboard, and I haven't quite perfected it enough to be willing to put on a mini, but it will be there soon enough, but I'll use it very subtley, maybe on the legs and elbows or soemthing like that. I'll need to learn how to free hadn the emblems as well for the terminators and ratpors since they don't make pads for those models.

Regards,

Thats better, the model looks great....i would suggest though that you slap on another highlight in the sharp edges of the ones you have already put on....that might make them stand out a bit more.

And with the combination of the (upcoming) lightning freehands theyle look great.

Regards,

Looking fantastic makes me want to choose Night Lords as my undevided legion.

I'm not sure you need to add any lightning, he looks good as he is.

OT: When did NL start having lightning on them, I don't recall it in the 3.5 dex or has my memory failed me again?

The lightning has existed since 2nd edition iirc. It changed nature in our recent codex from being painted on, to actual lightning playing across the armour (pretty dumb eh? :P).
great colour choice mate and he looks fantastic in the newer pics cant wait to see more

reminds me i need to finish off my raptors for my night lords

Thanks again man, now that the semester's over, I got some time I can get to work on them, hope to have some more updates later this week.

I thought of adding another highlight over the edges, I am little concerned with the model being too bright for my taste, personally I prefer my models to darker and not highlight all the way up to white or even a fairly light highlight, or at least when I'm doing an army that is supposed to be evil

Thanks for the compliment. I would like to try the lightning at least on a test model after I feel comfortable with the free hand and will go from there. Personally, I could live with out if it doesn't turn out the way I'd like it.

Great looking Night Lords Teivel. :tu:

How are you going to base them?

Thanks Nihm. This is kind of difficult because deciding how to base them also means deciding how I am going to to the terrain for the game board I am planning on doing or if I buy the citadel one. I am leaning towards a scorched earth look with using the scorched and/or burnt static grass over a very dark brown painted over gravel.

Nihm, I was also curious to how you did your free hand NL legion emblems, I will have to do that on the termies and the raptors, do you have a particular method you use?

Thanks again everyone, I'll try to have some more updates this week, don't have anymore finals to worry about :D

While not exactly ground breaking I do have a method.

I start by painting the outline of the skull in slightly thinned bestial brown (any brown will do, even grey I suspect).

Then I slowly build up the layers from a brown + bleached bone mix up to pure bleached bone and finally skull white.

The wings are always a bit tricky and only practice will ensure that they (and the skull) don't end up being lopsided. Like here on this shoulderpad. If your skull ends up askew, you can fix it by adjusting the placement of the wings - therefore I always paint the skull on first.

All I can tell you is that it isn't hard - it's a lot easier than I originally thought. Knowing how to draw (I don't ) helps a lot..

Your question prompted me to go through my old images and I discovered that you can actually see vast improvement from the first attempt, to the second and finally to the two newest: link and link

I hope that helps you. We need more genetically enhanced terrorists in blue. gallery_11038_675_1828.gif

If you want I can write up a step-by-step with images but it will probably take me about a week to do, real life willing.
