How To Slay The Mechanical Beast

Soon I am to play my old nemesis, we were allies for the last few games I've played and so we've seen how each other play and know roughly what each other can field. From memory he has a Mech Guard army with 2 Basilisks, Leman Russ, LR Punisher, 2 Chimaera's, Yarrick, Marbo, a few Veteran Squads with Commissars, Primaris Psyker and 2 Vendetta/Valkyrie's.

 

As you can see he has quite a few tanks. Trouble is, I've never played against Mech Guard before and am unsure how to defeat them.

 

I have; 20 Grey Hunters, 5 TDA Wolf Guard, 1 Lone Wolf, 5 Scouts, 12 Long Fangs's, 2 Rhino's, 2 Dreadnoughts, 3 Drop Pods, Vindicator, Land Raider, Land Raider Crusader, Njal, Logan, Arjac and Bjorn.

 

I don't have a point limit yet but it is usually around 1750 and 2000.

 

I was thinking of using both LR's, the LR with GH's and the LRC with Logan, TDA WG with AC+PF and GH's. Also was thinking of putting a couple of Dreads in Pods with the third Pod with TDA WG.

 

What do the Sons of Russ recommend?

Umm firsrly you havn't said points cost, i hope its over 1500 points, with all the tanks he has....

but anyway....Njal will be fairly useless againt tanks methinks....... Logan or Bjorn would be you best HQ.......

The scouts will be very useful, as long as you have Melta gun/bombs, Arjac will be good against tanks, maybe use both Dreads as well, have Bjorn and the 2 other dreads.... :P

if you say points cost, it would be easier :D :P

My question is is what do you longfangs and dreds have for weapons? do you have chainfists on any TDA WG?

 

and just something i noticed about what you said you buddy has.

i would hope he doesn't have commissars in his Vet. squads, unless they are commissar lords.... but then most of his other HQs would be out.

Well, I play IG a little bit. Seems quite aggressive list, but we still are better in CC. It appears, those veteran squads are running in chimeras or Valkyries. Where is his Company Command Squad? It should be somewhere safe, probably in one of those Chimeras, unless he's tooled them up for combat and placed in Valkyrie. Take them down, use scouts if he sits in transport back in cover and issues orders - as soon as You've done it, the orders are basically switched off. Don't forget that he can issue orders from the Chimera vehicle. Main advice - ignore Marbo and prepare to loose one of the LF units to him. So don't make them too expensive. Marbo is only 65 points, if I remember correctly. He will deepstrike without scatter and throw his demo charge. Yes that's annoying, but You can't do anything about it. After that, if he attracts decent amount of firepower as a retribution or anger, the IG will gain even more advantages as You are not shooting at other units. Remeber this! Marbo may assault somebody afterwards, and he is I 5 with 4 attacks and venomous blade, but he does not ignore AS. He may shoot somebody with a ripper pistol, but that's fairly it. Ignore Punisher - it throws a lot of dice (20 shots), but with BS 3 (unless he takes Commander Pask as upgrade) that's usually 1 dead marine per turn. Don' t let him target scouts.
I find that a punisher with three heavy bolters kills about six of my Grey Hunters on any given turn.

 

Its priority number 2, right after the executioner.

To be perfectly honest so many of those Russ variants cause me pain, standard, demolisher, executioner, vanquisher.

Well every LR variant, xcept Demolisher, can have 3 HB. But it's gatling cannon is quite pesky.

 

Btw, I might be mistaken, but I am counting 4 Elite slots in Your list, Clone... WG, scouts and 2 dreads.

 

And also, IG in a 1500 game can legally field 9 tanks - 4 Chimeras, Basilisk four Russes.

from what i am seeing here.( I know the gaurd codex quite well and i feel i know how to take them apart ) take 3 pods and fit them with your 2 dreadnoughts. and hit hit vendettas/ valkyries first. then his chimeras and his command squads and psyker battle squad. take long fangs with 3x missile launcher and 2x lascannon. Have 3 squads of 7 GH with wolf standard, motw and a melta gun lead by a wolf gaurd with a combi-melelta ( plasma is you don't have combi-melta ) and a anti-tank weapon, preferably a thunder hammer. stick two squads in rhinos and the last one in your 3rd pod. then get a force of termiantors with logan with njal and arjac. Then take your pick ( logan's squad deep strikes ).

 

that's the best i can do at the moment.

 

Russes are a more of a psycological threat than anything. however, pie plates are always a threat. but if you in cover, theirsr nothing much a russ can do but act as lots of S8 shots that can't ignore armour.

 

Drop 2 dreads or a dread and the GH squad in the pod to kill the basilisk right away ( place DWL in the GH pod, then vendettas/ valkyries right away. take off their mobility. Then target the chimeras then russes with your long fangs all game ( hit vendettas/ valkyires first however ).

Then charge up your rhinos with extra armour. and pick off the stragglers

hmmm, have logan, arjac and 2 terminators with frost blades and storm shields with logan without terminator armour and a WG with mark of the wulfen, melta bombs, and a combi-melta gun. Put them in a pod, increase the size of your rhino GH squads and make a 5 man GH squad with a terminator WG with a cyclone missile launcher, try to stick in a RP with LL and JOTWW if possible.

Go with 2 or 3 packs of Long Fangs with Lasscannons and a Landraider for good effect. I have used them recently in a balanced list and once you take out a Russ or 2 along with a Bassalisk then have a Scout squad to keep him guessing when you are going to show up and throw a melta bomb up the tail pipe after firing a Melta gun then that is how you deal with armor and of course do the Rhino rush and get them up and tangled up in the battle ASAP to nullify the templates... I love watching my IG buddy go nuts debating if he should fire a Demolisher with his own squad just inches away! Good luck. Check out my videos to see many IG encounters
