rangemaster
3 packs of grey hunters (27 GH) 1 blood claws pack (10 BC) 1 scout squad (5 S) 1 long fang (six long fangs) 1 rhino 1 Ven. Dred. 1 biker squad (3 bikers) 2 rune/ wolf priests coming soon wolf lord wolf guard (5 wg) 1 dred. my question is, what do I do now? I side stumbled into 40k 4 years ago. i got out of lotr (but still play on occassions) and mainly painted/ converted my figures. recently i've learned the rules and got more squads. how do i proceed now for a rec./local tourney army? what equipment do i take. also i may turn one wolf guard into lone wolf (is this good idea or are more wolf guards better?) I realize i need another piece of armour, but what? i plan to only get one more tank. or should i leave it off? I kinda like to equip my troops with lots of pricey weapons, so points aren't really a problem for me. or is there a local tourney point standard? lastly (this may sound cheezy) what wolf lord should I take based on my army? 4 years back I did Morakai, but have little interest in stealth as according to the new codex. my wolf lord is in term. armour, thunderhammer, storm sheild, beast slayer saga. possibly will take warrior born or bear sagas. lastly I have a friend getting into 40k/ space wolves. he doesn't have anything yet. we plan to team up at our local gw so how could he build a army that works well with mine/ on it's own and is model lite/ point heavy? thank you PS. sorry if I appear stupid with my questions I just picked up on 40k. Grey Mage
Why only one more tank? Frankly if your going to be bringing any tanks, you should probly bring a few. That being said, Id reccommend a second rhino *built from the razorback kit so you have weapon options* and a vindicator. There is a local tournament point standard- most are either 1500, 1750, or 1850pts, but many places do smaller games like 750 or 1000pts now and again aswell. Ignore the new codex... stealth for marines is a relative thing- the fact that you have few vehicles could mean your troops "stealthily" footslogged their way up to the enemy positions... or you could ignore it, and say that the scribe who wrote that peice of drivel got it wrong. Model Light point heavy? Yeah, he could bring the tanks ;). Not even joking, if he wants to have fewer models then he should throw down some fire support for your footslogging squads- 2 Vindicators, 2 Dreadnaughts, a Whirlwind, and Bjeorn will eat up about 1000pts right there. 2 Squads of Grey Hunters in rhinos for another 400, and probly a landspeeder for the last 100. Its all good- we were all new once. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/186908-army-help-please/#findComment-2210816 Share on other sites
Hfran Morkai
Welcome to the Fang! Grey Mage has some solid ideas, being a great regular around here. I really wish I'd bought all my Rhinos as Razorbacks instead so I don't have to worry about buying up more models. If you're going to use one Rhino I'd suggest at least another Rhino/Razorback as most things work in pairs. Land Raiders are nice but expensive, great for sticking a Blood Claw pack in but at 1500 points that's a sixth of your force into one model, sure it's tough but there are other things those points can go into. Vindicators are good all-rounders, short range isn't a big issue as someone will be getting close, whether it's you or your opponent doesn't matter. That strength ten weapon is brilliant from cutting down Ork mobs, to Terminators and even vehicles with rolling two dice for armour penetration and picking the highest. Whirlwinds are also fun because you can remove units in cover such as pesky Eldar Pathfinders, they get a ridiculous cover save and you just fire the incendiary round and still wound them on a 3+ but no cover save and I believe it might negate the armour save of them as well. Also it can be fired indirectly meaning you could hide it behind cover at the back of the board, scatter will increase but it's relatively safe. Anyway, I would recommenced a Razorback for your Long Fang pack if you're going with a single tank, reason being it's another heavy weapon that small arms fire will have trouble with and it offers the pack mobility if playing Dawn of War scenarios, allowing them to take good defensive positions. And yeah, stealth and marines is fun. I believe it's more referring to his high numbers of Wolf Scouts and he enjoys taking out enemies before they have time to react but his battle plan wouldn't completely hinge on it. rangemaster
sounds good, thanks. whirlwind sounds awesome if you can just park it in the back and pick off troops. i think i'll also do a razorback or maybe a preditor. can predators act as transports? any weapon preferences for troops? i hear the melta is a good one. also what do the different grenades do? Warhorse47
Sorry, the Preds aren't transports. That's why the the Razorback is so popular with your LF pack as they can all fit inside it and still have some good fire support too. Grey Mage
All three are good, and good at different things, I myself run: 2x Plasmarifle, Powerfist-185pts. 2x Meltagun, Powerweapon- 170pts. 2x Flamer, Powerfist- 175pts. Often in DPs or Rhinos, or footslogging with a TDA equiped wolf gaurd to lead them. Why a WGTDA? Because he can soak up things like krak missiles and such that would just pop my GHs. Everything else is optional, for instance I have two banner carriers around, and theyre a good upgrade for a unit expecting CC in their future- and as a SW CC should be expected in your future ;). Plasmapistols tend to do well with Plasmarifles when your holding an objective, and with Flamers for a transport killer, or atleast a chance at it. In meltagun squads they are fairly redundant. I wont give Mark of the Wulfen to my squads- wulfen are not celebrated battle brothers, they dont use bolters.... I cant stomach it. Wolf Bitten, maybe... but thats not what they are. Yes, I know thats a personal bias, but on the other hand I dont think its worth the points either- just a bone we were thrown to make up for losing our second SCCW.
