First fight with the new wolves

Well I had my first game with the new wolves and have to say i had alot of fun playing. the uniqueness of the wolves makes the game far more enjoyable to me.

We played on one of the games workshop "battleboards" with a large piece of terrain in the center on each table half. I was playing against a Black templar army that consisted of 2 "tac" squads of 10 1 with the emperors champion and a pf apiece. then an additional infantry unit with a lascannon with 10 marines. then a unit of terminatos held in reserve with 2 AC's, and finally a vanilla dread with AC and SB.

My army consisted of CAnis the wolfborn, 5-man GH squad with PW, 10-man Blood Claws with Lukas, Lone wolf in tac armor with WC's, vindicator, razorback with AC's, and a Long Fang pack 2 ML's and 2 HB's.

The game started with me choosing to go second so i could watch him deploy and then respond accordingly (in the end my deployment held me back.) my LF's held one of the hills with the longest LOS and everything else was kind of bunched up on the left. the first turn saw canis the wolfborn engage the 10 man squad with the emperors champion. I have to say that canis is really a significant unit with one flaw, the 10 men and the EC's encircled canis and his 1 fenwolf with 6 models in B2B i used those as attacks, and chose to reroll wounds (i felt that the WS increase and the hits on 3's was eaiser to get then the 4's on wounds.) the emperors champion failed to inflict and PW wounds and canis quickly clawed 6 marines. the fenwolf took a hit and died leaving canis and a few marines. the other units didn't accomplish much as my faulty deployment left me more with alot of ground to cover to get into position than any good targets to progress my army.

fast forward to the lone wolf singly engaging the terminator squad and bringing down 3 to his 1 wound. (he took an AC hit however i forgot to use the mark of the wulfen). Canis was pulled down by the emp champions sword. but was killed himself. the GH's were overrun in CC by the 10 man foot sloggers, however the end of that turn setup a perfect opportunity for the blood claws to charge into the remainder. I found quickly that the lower WS is a significant problem, and made me decide to take the standard whenever possible. lukas was mediocre but i feel didn't get a chance to get into the fight. almost all units fulfilled the role they were assigned.

Lessons Learned

1. Lone Wolf- this toon really needs to be either in TDA or near enough to a Ruen Priest to get the invuln save. they are really a force to be reckoned with and i feel like if my lone wolf had engaged the squad he set out to attack insted of the terminators that teleported directly in front of him his utility would have gone up quite a bit.

2. Canis is really squishy without that Invuln save. I feel like he is immensely powerful against units of 10+ and i have no reservations about him being a consistent part of my lists. rune priest would be very beneficial to trail along behind canis.

3. blood claws are amazing on the charge but have to be bolstered with a standard, i know its just 1's but every extra hit is worthwhile in my book.

4. MoW needs to be used if i'm going to pay for it lol.

5. Lukas i'm going to give this model another chance and hope that he can close with the enemy a little more effectively, I think against a similar stat opponent he would be quite effective.

thanks for reading not much new or that interesting of info here but thought i would put it to type.

and now i see why everyone takes rune priests! i'm thinking for my 1.5k list i'm going to use the last 500 for more GH's. Wolf guard pack, and a runepriest.

in the end my faulty deployment and a store quite literally filling with magic players ended the game.

Good post helpful insghts.....

Though I think only Grey hunters can use the standard...

you are correct my mistake, makes the BC's even more unappealing, i had 20 die to roll on the charge and had 4 hits, was dissapointing to say the least

Lone wolf in tac armor with WC's....

If I am reading this right, then you took a Lone Wolf with Wolf Claws, correct? If so, then you shouldn't have bought Mark of the Wulfen for him, as that upgrade cannot be combined with special close combat weapons. Thus, you wouldn't get to use your Wolf Claws. It's either one, or the other, but not both. Your best bet would be to stick with the Wolf Claws, which always ignore armour, and leave the MotW to one of your Hunters in the GH pack.

Blood Claws with Weapon Skill 3 against an enemy with Weapon Skill 4, still hit on a roll of 4+ in close combat, so if you rolled only 4 hits out of 20 attacks, then you rolled exceptionally poorly.

Valerian

10 BC on the charge is 40 attacks, unless you lost half the squad before that

yup and in hindsight i only rolled the 20. I did roll the PF seperate and lukas seperate but i did only roll twenty could have changed things a littel, they did win the combat and get the opposing squad, but i guess it could have been done faster.

Sorry if I'm being retarded. It's also late and my math-fu might be failing me, but how are they getting 40 attacks? 10 normal +20 furiously charging is thirty attacks.

1A base, +1 for 2 CC's, +2 for furious charge=4 per BC

10 BC's 4A = 40

Each Blood Claw gets 1 attack, plus 1 for having an off-hand weapon, plus 2 for Berserk Charge, so that's a total of 4 attacks each on the assault.
