BertyBottyBiter
I'm getting back into the hobby and I have lots of lovely miniatures on the way. Before I start to build everything I would love some advice as to what to do with it all! I have: 3 x Wolf Pack Boxset 1 x Scouts Box 1 x Devastator Box 1 x Drop Pod 1 x Predator 1 x Dreadnought 1 x Canis Wolfborn Box 1 x Lukas the Trickster 1 x Logan Grimnar 1 x Rune Priest I also have 5 Wolf Guard Terminators which I have already built as follows: 1) TH, SS; 2) SB, WC; 3) CM, WC; 4) CM, CF; 5) AC, WC. Before I build anything else what do people think I should do? I have a few additional bits kicking around - Left & Right Autocannon arms for a dreadnought, a couple of flamers, 3 meltaguns - but I don't want to get anything else at the moment (this rules out more than one missile launcher for the devastators). I was thinking of converting Canis into a standard TWC with a powerfist but not sure. Similarly, I am happy to use Logan and Lukas as generic unit types. I would love a mix of Blood Claws, Grey Hunters and Long Fangs but I really don't want to build everything wrong. I haven't played a game in nearly 10 years but want to get back into things with a core army that is mildly competitive with the bits that I have. Ideas and suggestions would be most welcome - please help! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/187304-what-can-i-build-with-what-i-have/ Share on other sites
CainTheHunter
Well, it depends what You want. I'd assemble 5 scouts with wolfy heads, at least 2 GH packs, Long fang pack, several power armored Wolf Guards to lead these, including scouts, convert dreadnought to make it more wolfy and attack drop pod to him. Still, need a couple of Rhinos/Razorbacks. Ideas and suggestions would be most welcome - please help! Well, I would say youd be well off getting one more tactical box, but as it is you have alot to work with eh? So... Id say to give you a flexable force your best bet to use those box sets is thus: 5 Long Fangs, including a Pack Leader- with 2 Lascannons, and 2 Plasmacannons. Its a flexable unit, if a little pricey at 165pts. 10 Grey Hunters- 2 Plasmarifles, and a Powerfist. Runs about 185pts, and is a nicely rounded unit. 10 Grey Hunters- 2 Meltaguns, and a powerweapon- runs about 170pts, is a more close in unit, the killing of big things should be done with the meltagun and if needed finished off in CC as required. Great in a rhino! A Combat Squad would allow you to get a full squad of 15 Bloodclaws with 2 Flamers and a Powerfist- this is a good setup, runs about 250pts. Alternatively Id suggest another squad of 10 GHs with 2xPlasmarifles and a Powerfist. They make great close range fire support. Another alternative is 10 GHs with a PF, a Flamer, and a Meltagun- good flexable squad for 175pts. Fairly effective, if short ranged. Id suggest a setup for your scouts of 1 Meltagun and 1 Powerweapon- runs 100pts, and is good at killing anything without overspecialising. Great if you want them to operate behind enemy lines. For your Predator I suggest getting some magnets, so you can use it with any combination of turret and sponsons. For your Dreadnaught I suggest painting up all the arms so you can switch them out freely as you like. AC+HF is however one of the best in my opinion, so I suggest a HF on the DCCW arm. Drop Pods should be kept cheap, so a Stormbolter is best here. The more points you throw on an immobile vehicle that cannot fire when it first lands the more points your handing to your opponent. Theyre wonderful delivery systems, but they should be made as expendable as possible. Id suggest that your rune priest be modified to hold a bolt pistol, Im assuming its the 13nth company rune priest model with the braids and the widows peak? Beautiful model, my Wolf Priest is made from him. Logan and Lukas should be made as they are... and they are useful as is. Lastly, you have a Canis Wolfborn model? Well, personally I think hes a steal for what he can do, even if I dont use him- so Id make him as is. If nothing else its a Wolf Lord with a TWM and 2xLC- about 195pts. Edit:Note: I think a Combat Squad would be a good idea, lets you make some guys with different weapons *power weapons, powerfists, flamers* to switch out in your Grey Hunter packs. BertyBottyBiter
Thanks for the suggestions. I hadn't thought of using magnets and have to say I have never tried. I'm willing to give it a go though. What size magnets would be best to use for say the Dreadnought and the Predator? CainTheHunter
The usuall diameter for wargaming is 3 mm. As to their thickness, I'd suggest at least 1 mm, since 0,5 mm could be took weak for dreadnought (at least for a joint between torso and legs) and sponsons. Grey Mage
Theres also alot of threads on how to use Magnets in the "PCA" subforum... the experts could tell you better than I. Oh, by the way- never buy rhinos. If you want them, buy a razorback kit and put the hatches on without gluing them to the hull- it allows you to switch between the two, netting you almost a 30 dollar model for free since you only have to buy 1.
