Grey Mage
Mores the pity? Only gotta buy one book! (unless you already had the SM book :tu: ) Ive been playing SWs for a long, long time, of course i have the book! And its been wonderful getting an update every edition gauranteed- because they might leave tau alone, or bt, but never will vanilla marines go an edition without an update. Being a minidex gave us one too. This new codex is great, dont get my wrong- but it wont last 10 years. Personally I desperately hoped that it would say something along the lines of *For the rules and stats for all Space Wolf vehicles and weapons that are not unique to this army, please see Codex: Space Marines*, but alas, no. So yes, it's a stand alone codex. In a couple of years we'll be feeling the same pain Necrons/Inq/other old codex users are feeling at the moment... rangemaster
i see your point about the vanilla marines being updated like every 5 years which helps the sw stay fresh, but there isn't really that much that changes in these update, right? there were a few tank+ dreadnaughts+weapons that one needed to look up in sm, but really the space wolves did ok without the sm codex. i haven't seen the new codex yet, but i hear it's pretty good. one thing i'm bummed about is scouts can't get shotguns anymore. i guess if the sw depended on the sm codex i could have my shotguns back, but i don't mind too much. what are they updating next? it better be eldar and dark eldar, the figures are ancient. jesus used to play with them. lol. they re-updated the tyranids, which i find weird because they updated a few years back. nurglespuss
personally i feel that GW should have a Galactic Armory Tome broken down into Imperial, Chaos, and Xenos. They did! it was the wargear book in 2nd ed  and also an updated 'emulation' just for weapons more recently. As for the previous wolf codex, it may have lasted 10 years, but it was horrible to play against! far too aggressive, and too open to abuse. Now its fun, and I hope all codex's follow this format. I don't like space marine wargear being 'generic' its all unique, and helps to provide forces that work differently even with a common background (its why i like the darkangel codex). Heh, I have the latter of those two books :( But all SM wargear *is* and should be the same (With a few chapter specific exceptions). It doesn't really make sense that one chapter's Storm Shields should be inferior to another chapters. Also, Wolves should be an aggressive force, that's one of the things I liked about the last codex. Now we're just SMs in grey PA. Meh... SWs are as agressive as you want them to be, if they arent going far enough then you should look at new ways to do what you want. nurglespuss
I think they are plenty aggressive enough! very characterful, and excellent on the counter attack. And why should all wargear be the same? with the divergence in chapters, practices and traditions, and availability of resources, why shouldn't there be variations in how wargear functions? it adds more detail to me, anything else just really smacks of complaining! :) and makes things more bland.
