General Paints for Marines

Recommended Posts

Mayhaps this should be in a more of a general discussion, but because I am building an SW army I figured this would be a better place to ask:

What are the 'general' colors I should have on hand when painting Space Wolves? Aside from the Grey, of course and some form of yellow (any specific 'style' of yellow?)

Anything helps.

Thanks guys,

any colors you want :D it is really up to you but some basics are:

- grey: you touched this one but i have every grey GW carries

-yellow: it is up to you which one, i use sunburst and golden yellow

- red: once again choose you color

-black

-white looks good when used right

then the basic hair/flesh colors

The colors above are right except for one thing.

The main color of your army has to be either a pure gray or a bluish-gray, which one is up to you.

The original color for SW is a blueish-grey. As can be seen on their first codex (2nd ed)

Nowadays most ppl go for a much darker blueish-grey thou.

I'd suggest a couple of Citadel washes as well - Asurmen Blue, Badab Black, Gryphon Sepia, Ogryn Flesh. There are more flesh, leather, bone and other colours when painting SW, than Vanilla Marines.

For example, for my army I need all types of grey (Shadow, Codex, Fortress, Space Wolves), Skull White, Chaos Black. Sunburst + Golden Yellow + foundation Iyanden Darksun, almost all metallics and bronzed flesh + elf flesh + foundation flesh. Different types of brown for hair, beards, leather pouches and straps.

Personally I favour foundation paints as undercoats. You can't go wrong with them especially with translucent colours like red and especially yellows. I'd go for Iyanden yellow (foundation paint) as an undercoat for painting yellow, and mechrite red as a basis for red. I use them exclusively with my BC packs.

Unlike other chapters, SW have a lot of bare heads, so I suggest Tallarn Flesh as an undercoat. Whether or not you use Vallejo or GW paints to add to these for shading and highlighting is up to you. I am not very fond of the bluish-grey, so I paint my wolves with an undercoat of Adeptus Battlegrey (yep, another foundation paint) and highlight with Space Wolves Grey. Hope it helps. :D

Actually the original colour for SW was initially 'greyish' grey. The bluish-grey came out of the blue (no pun intended) with 2nd edition. I know this as hard fact because my first SW army was during the 1st edition.
