Magnets Rock for Wolves

Just started my latest SW army. It will be entirely magnetized, so that no matter what book comes out or what options I want to try, I won't have to buy a bunch of new stuff. Now a 10 man pack is actually 10 men...

I also included pics of my dreadnought. Arms are not glued so I can swap them out. (the heavy flamer is permanent because it is a hold over from my old army)

I'm also in the middle of magnetizing my wolves. Could you post a couple pics of the work you did to magnetize? (Maybe just a clear shot or 3 of the torso, arms and shoulder pads where you put magnets in. Any tips?

My major problems so far are, the tapered end of the drill, to actually get deep enough to make the magnet flush on the outside, I'm sometimes forces to drill a little too deep where the tapered portion will go deeper than I really want it to.

Some of the arms twisting from the weight of the arm even though it's just plastic. I see you're using more than one - that's a good idea to have multiple connection points to counter that. I think I need to get the next size smaller to fit multiple magnets.

Oh, and sore fingers because the larger drill bits don't fit in my pin vice so I have to twist them with my fingers and after 30 or 40 drillings it takes it's tole!

Also, really like the dark paintjob on the guy with the axe.

I suppose it can be tedious, but its faster than you think if you get a system down.

I use the smallest rare earth magnets I could find, I think they are 1/32"x1/16" but I may be mistaken. I also use the GW pin vise because it is slightly bigger than one I found in a hobby store. I still had to jam in the 1/16" drill bit, but its in and it works great.

After I drilled my first couple holes I can now guess how deep I need to go. I use Loctite super glue that is nice and thick, so it doesn't run everywhere like normal super glue. I found that a good technique is to use a short stack of magnets and stick the hole thing into the hole just enough to align the lead magnet, then I sort of bend off the stack, which leaves one in the glued hole.

I use multiple magnets for each arm to prevent them from twisting once I slap on an arm. You can get away with 2 on each side, but I like 3 because its much more secure and arms won't go falling everywhere during a game. (of course you still need to be careful when playing).

2 handed weapons like bolters or the power axe in the pic take a little more time to position. I use plastic cement to get a nice hard bond between the arms (this is obviously after I've drilled and placed the magnets).

You can also paint over these magnets and still allow them to work.

As far as painting goes, I use Krylon Grey Primer as both primer and basecoat. I wash the whole model with Badab Black (I'm gonna experiment with a dip on my next few guys).

After the wash I drybrush Adeptus Battlegrey over everything, leaving the recessed areas dark. Adeptus Battlegrey matches nearly perfectly with Krylon Grey Primer, and should make doing vehicles way easier.

I add a highlight of Fortress Grey drybrush or lighter grey of some kind.

After all that its a matter of painting the details, washing what needs to be washed, highlighting, and then sealing it with Krylon Matte Varnish.

I do the base with Fenris Grey, highlighted with drybrushing from Space Wolves Grey and White. My gameboard is an ice world, but I like the Fenris Grey because no matter where you play, it blends in fairly well with the table.

Hope this helps. Gotta get back to building more wolves...

I'm working on the same projects actually :). Thanks for the tips concerning AoBR dread conversions - I actually was intending to use the same bits from SW pack sprue on my dread, but was not sure about their location :).

I'am also thinking about cutting off the multimelta barrels, adding some magnets there and trying to convert twinlinked lascannon from IG heavy weapon sprues to get interchangable ranged weapons.

I'm just going to magnetize my termies, dread, and vehicles since they have the most options per model. With the GH and BC troops I don't think it is worth the effort, at least not with my level of laziness! I might magnetize two swiftclaws though, since that will give me the option of fielding two units with special weapons.

Good solid paint job by the way. I like it a lot. :)
