Pain

Kavarr laid on the dark and barren ground engulfed in smoke. By the Emperor he couldn't see! His helmet lay next to him and he could feel the burning shrapnel in the skin of his face. He couldn't see, he could only hear the guns. The damned guns that had brought him down. The damned guns that were winning the battle. The guns he was to weak to silence! They taunted him with there laughter, but nothing was more unnerving then the battle-cries.

The battle-cries of the traitors rang in his ears.

"BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!" The traitors chanted cutting down any Imperial left.

Kavarr gently slid off his power armoured gauntlet and brought his hand to his face. He was shaking violently, it was cold. A wind blew through the barren, torn land scape of the world. Kavarr felt the cuts on his flesh and the blood still trickling out of them. His hand quickly withdrew feeling the jagged end of a shard of metal. The barbed hooks were in his skin and by some vile magic they were slowly killing him. He knew the wounds would not be healed, he knew this would be his last battle.

But, nothing hurt worse than not dying on his feet. The shrieks of the helpless bit deep into his heart. Even in death he would not forget them. His Battle-Brothers screamed for the Emperor to give them strength. Bolters spat forth there deadly ammunition tearing through the traitorous marines. Kavarr desperately wished his ears would've been blown off in the burst of shrapnel that had finally subdued him. Yet, he would have no such luck.

It was torture. Lying there, listening to friends die. Listening to allies hacked apart. Listening to brothers being killed. He would not lay down and die. He bit his tongue knowing of the pain that would soon come. He took his hand to his face and gripped the shrapnel. Without hesitation or fear he pulled. There was a suction as chunks of flesh were pulled from his face. It was hell. His body thrashed on the ground as he went back to get another handful.

Again white hot pain! He snarled a prayer to the gods as he felt the outline of his skull. The blood was everywhere now all over his face. But, his vision was returning to him. He had gotten the blood out at least. Despite every muscle in his body screaming in protest he sat up. It was slow and jerky, but he managed to sit up. It was dizzying taking in the battle all at once as if he had been reborn.

Smoke! Smoke was everywhere. It was pitch black, as dark as his own power armor and twice as dirty. It was as if he was enveloped in his own world. A world lightened only be daemons. Or lasbolts and the discharges of ammunition in this case. They tore through the smoke and even in darkness still finding a target. The corpses were everywhere and it seemed they had tripled since the last time. They were mauled, viciously killed, guardsmen. Faces gripped in everlasting forms of terror. Massive and inhumane wounds thrown across there chests, faces, and even legs. They were cut to pieces.

But, nothing looked more disturbing then the towering Astartes amongst them. Power armour was smashed and dented. They were savagely killed, each individual marine having a host of cuts and gashes through there power armor. They were bathed in there own blood with there black armour literally turned crimson such was the savagery shown towards them by the enemy. It was ugly and it didn't make since. Nothing did. Brother killing Brother? The Emperor's greatest champions turning against him? Why oh why had they forsaken him?

Kavaar didn't know and he didn't care. All he cared about was killing the enemy. By the Emperor they would pay. He stumbled slowly to a discarded chainsword lying near a pile of mauled guardsmen and a titanic marine. He took it greedily and revved it up just to make sure it still worked. It would do him suffice. While doing so he noticed that the dead marine was nearly cut in half. Surely only the work of lightning claws could do such a thing. Kavaar knew they were a speciality in his legion and knew of even fewer legions that mobilized them in force.

The World Eaters were not one of them...

"I'll be damned! Brother did you see the light as well?"

Kavaar turned around at the familiar voice. Behind him stood a power-armored warrior of the Raven Guard. His black power armor matched Kavaar's, but it was covered in blood. In place of the average gauntlets were two mighty lightning claws, one with a single skull impaled upon it. Kavaar could not see the warriors face, but knew it to be none other than Kavius. Kavius, his ally. Kavius, his friend. Kavius, his brother.

"Why are you not in the battle?" Kavaar asked revving his chainsword.

"There are few skulls left to collect for the Blood God," Kavius replied his voice deep and booming.

"Oh Brother. Why?" Kavaar asked tears forming in his already bloodied eyes.

"The Emperor is a full along with your Imperium," Kavius replied emotionless.

"Do not do this," Kavaar said unbelieving of what was happening.

"Join me and we can live forever. Horus is a savior, a saint. He is liberating the Imperium, not killing it," Kavius replied.

"Oh and I suppose he was saving all of our brethren back on Isstvaan IV?" Kavaar growled.

No longer was he in pain. It was rage now. He had been back stabbed, abandoned. They had taken oaths to fight for the people as long as they lived. All of this was being thrown into his face. And by the closest of his Brothers too. He would die here, but he would make sure the cursed traitor went with him.

"BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!" Kavius roared leaping across the piles of dead.

"FOR THE EMPEROR!" Kavaar screeched leaping forward to meet him.

Kavius leaped through the air both gracefully and frenzied at the same time. His lightning claws were already thirsting for another victim. Kavaar would not give him the satisfaction. With a flash of sparks his chainsword parried a shattering blow from the lightning claws. The blows would kill lesser men and even Astartes, but Kavaar would not fall. He gritted his teeth and ignored the shaking in his arm. Resolving to block another blow.

Kavius, the bastard, was quick. But, the powerfists slowed him down. Perhaps if he wasn't wounded he would've been able to take him. But, sadly Kavaar was and it greatly hampered his movement. He stumbled under swipes from the blows and landed clumsy hits from his chainsword on Kavius. But, they would not dent his armor.

"I truly am sorry, Kavaar," Kavius said smashing away his amateur defenses away with a single swipe.

Kavaar landed in a pile of corpses. The blood splattered against his armor, it would match his own blood in mere moments. Kavius closed around him, slowed by the enormous bulk of his lightning claws. Kavaar would not give him the satisfaction. He scrambled around in the scraps that were once proud guardsmen searching for a weapon. He gripped a melta bomb and primed it. As Kavius bore down upon him he unleashed its furious contents. There was a flash of fire and light.

Kavaar could feel the heat on his face, it burned him and the shrapnel itself embedded it in his armoured chest. That was not the worst, he could not feel his stomach. He raised his head seeing that Kavius was nothing more than a headless marine. A headless marine with claws lodged into his stomach. Kavaar winced at the pain. Whatever god was out there, it would soon take him.

The scorch marks, the shrapnel, the claws, and the cuts all took a mighty toll on him. He could feel the last of his life blood draining from his once mighty veins. It was a horrendous, painful end. But, nothing compared to the betrayal. Never once had he ever thought he would kill his own brother. Yet, here he was lying on top of him.

Brother! Dear Brother! Why have you abandoned me so? Have I not been faithful to you? Have we not fought in the name of the Emperor for nearly fifty years? Why? Oh why Brother do you trouble me so? Have you not been satisfied by our peace? By our victories? Why Brother have you abandoned the Imperium?

You were with me when the traitorous bastard Horus revealed his treachery. We stood together with Corax himself unmoving against the waves of traitors that came at us. We stood strong and faithful even when he went down, even when the revered Ferrus died. We would not yield to such traitors. But, why have you now? Dear Brother, why have you abandoned me?

When the Iron Warriors encircled us we did not faulter. Where others fled we fought! We won! Glorious Brother we escaped! We are blessed by the gods I say! Blessed! Why have you turned your back on them? Are we not lucky? We live with our primarch! The Emperor only asks that we obey! Why have you turned your back on his dream? Why have you abandoned me so?

Did you not devote yourself to mankind? Did you not devote yourself to the bettering of society and defending the Emperor himself? Why have you betrayed me so? Where we not close? Where we not brothers?

The pain. It was unimaginable. In the last moments of pain, thought, and betrayal he was relieved. Relieved from his troubles. In those last moments of conflict he closed his eyes.

They would not open again. They would never again see his Brother...

Well written and very entertaining. Um, hate to say it but the grammar and spelling is bad enough to detract from the overall effect. Friendly suggestion: type any future stories up on office word first and run them through spell check. Still, very good story! :D

Shamefully English is my language too. This was just a mixture of bad spelling (written around midnight) and laziness to install office word. But, I will get to it and I plan on writing a few more about legions during the Horus Heresy and how it affected the brotherhood of marines.
