rodgambit
I play 13th Company and I'm using the new codex. I have about 50 grey slayers(hunters) but no vehicles. Does anyone have any useful tips for how to successfully use a foot force? I play 1500 pts. games. I'm not totally against using some vehicles, but financially i'd rather purchase say 1 whirlwind, rather then 4 or 5 rhinos for all the squads. Should I maybe run more then 1 rune priest to provide cover with storm caller? Any tips are welcome, thanks. Freman Bloodglaive
Field maximum sized units. Point your units towards the objective and move/run to get there as quickly as possible... at least as long as it doesn't mean you'll end up hammered by enemy forces. Make use of scouts and long fangs to disrupt enemy armour. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/187725-foot-slogging/#findComment-2221321 Share on other sites
TiguriusX
You will need cover if you are foot slogging. Can you afford fenrisian wolves? Full unit of wolves spread out can provide a good sized screen If not then put some GH in front of the others and hope for the best. A RP with storm caller in the middle of a formation is well worth the price as well Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/187725-foot-slogging/#findComment-2221335 Share on other sites
Wispy
Dreadnoughts are very good foot slogging companions. They're basically cover that moves at the same speed as your infantry. rodgambit
Do you get cover from ordance fire? I could use dreads to march in front but I often play guard with ordance weapons and pie plates. I do have one full pack of fen wolves but I find their leadership so low and save so poor that they just get blasted off the board in one turn or flee. stinkenheim
yes you do get a save from ordnance. if it fires through cover, or the shot scatters so that the vehicles LOS is passin through another unit you will get cover save. the difference is barrage, where it depends on where the centre of the marker is. if the centre of the marker is outside woods and you are in, you get a save. if its inside the same scenery piece as you you don't. likwise if the centre is over a A unit and the template also hits unit B, unit B will get a cover save. the wolves are a good screen but you need the saga of the wolfkin. also take bikes or maybe even TWC to act as a bigger threat to the enemy than your basic units. failing that play cities of death because theres plenty of scenery to hide behind :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/187725-foot-slogging/#findComment-2221483 Share on other sites
rodgambit
I was thinking of running: 4 packs of grey slayers 10 strong with a pack leader. That would give me 44 troops. 2 whirlwinds for indirect fire and to possibly cover my foot sloggers. 1 long fang pack with ml's 2 dreads walking with the troops to add cover and act as a fire magnet 1 rune priest with storm caller and then a shooting power That's the basic list I was thinking of atm. SamaNagol
Marines don't really benefit as much from cover per se. And the benefit of mechanized lists is they can act as 'true screens' blocking LoS. The best way to make a foot slogging list survivable is to present a wider number of threats. This is achievable due to the points you have saved not having to buy Land Raiders or Rhinos. A couple of small units of TWC would be great at drawing fire. Perhaps even a Lone Wolf also if you have a spare Elite slot. Dreadnoughts are great targets to present, taking 2 is always better than one. Combined with fast moving threats like TWC, you shift your valuable troops down the list of 'immediate threats' when it comes to shooting. And of course, Dreadnoughts do benefit greatly from cover, so use that to keep them alive as long as possible!
