Just got my early Christmas present to myself

I just started playing 40k a few months ago with 'nids, and wanted a smaller more elite force for a long time painting/modeling/playing project. I've loved the DH figures since I first saw them, and GK are without a doubt my favorite PA army. I've got all the GK's I need, but they could really use some transpo.

I've read most of the tacticas and battle reports, and it seems that it boils down to a personal choice between LRC's and vanilla LR's. Which do you use and why?

I'm trying to avoid buying two LR's then having to fork out the extra cash for the Crusader upgrade when I could have bought the LRC/R box to begin with.

I'm not the most seasoned veteran around here but I tend to favor Godhammers over Crusaders but my style is also more of a sit back, snipe and let the baddies come to me as opposed to a go up and get 'em type of play. That being said, there's a lot of value to a crusader with smoke launchers that rushes up 12" in the 1st turn and pops smoke (which for us reduces all pens to glances). Then on turn 2, baring any immobilized results, you rush another 12", fire all of the LRC's weapons, unleash a bunch of bad ass termies who unload some promethium, dakka and then assault with strength 6 power weapons and then watch as your opponent is reduced to tears. Just be sure that whatever you run, you have 2 of the same because in a pure GK army, LR's are melta magnets and if you have one of each on which you are counting, you can trust that one of them is going to get popped and eff up your strategy, right when you need it the most. All in all, I think it really comes down to your play style and which model compliments your army list. I've also seen it said that if you are transporting PAGK's go with godhammers as a mobile, protective, bunker that can pop transports from afar, and hold objectives. If you are transporting Termies who you want to get right into the fray, use Crusaders since your goal is to get up close anyway.

Get a GK Land Raider Redeemer (Rules in the latest Imperial Armour book, also in siege of vraks 3, whatever you do, don't download from a torrent site as that would be wrong).

S6 AP3 flamers that ignore invulnerable saves, anyone charging from the vehicle counts as I10 for that round of assault. Pure awesomeness. FW Have a very expensive kit for it, or you could use the regular LRR kit and convert yourself some Psycannons.

Just keep in mind that if you do go the LRR route with pure GK's, you will be seriously under armed to deal with mech lists, unless you are pretty consistent with rolling 5's and 6's. Also, being a FW model, you cannot use it in most tournies. I'm not saying it isn't awesome, but just pointing out that the awsomeness does not come without a price, both economically and strategically.

Pursuant to fuzbuckle's comment, a pure GK army is not capable of being a competitive all-comer's army. Pure GK has always struggled against enemy mechanized forces, and that shortcoming has become a crippling liability since the advent of 5th edition 40K. Certainly you can enjoy the challenges of a pure GK army, but, in all sincerity, you simply cannot expect to win very many games against armies built from the current crop of 5th edition codexes. They are far more points-efficient and carry all the tools required to bust open 2-3 land raiders with relative ease (especially since that's the most armour you can field) and still have enough infantry to deal with the angry GKs subsequently dismounted.

If you are interested in a more balanced army with the DH, you need to use ISTs for Troops and seriously consider inducting an IG platoon or two as well.

That said, if you are sticking to 1000 pt games, a dual land raider crusader set-up will be very challenging for your opponents. Unless that's about all you bring, in which case, they can easily update their army lists and then take care of you with ease. It all depends on whether they will learn to bring the paper to counter your rock. If they do that, you too will have to adapt if you wish to remain competitive in return.

While I have a healthy respect for flamers and the damage they can dole out, I find that the LRC and GHLR are more in keeping with what I had in mind for vehicles. I'm a huge proponent of magnetizing though, so I wouldn't be adverse to picking up just the psycannon part from FW and having the parts for a LRR hanging out in my transport case to use on the right table.

I've been made aware of the inherent imbalance with a pure GK force, and I am looking forward to assembling a straight Ordo Malleus Inquisitor force next that I'll swap squads between them and the GK's along with some IG to give it a little oomph when I want to play DH competitively, but that's a ways down the line. I'm no stranger to being the underdog at my FLGS right now, mostly because I'm fielding a mostly CC horde 'nid army against generally mechanized SW, IG, CSM, and SM armies with some Daemon armies thrown in that all seem uniquely suited to smack me down in one way or another. After the first flurry of beatdowns I received it became more fun to play my forces as a heroic last stand no matter what, and GK's fit right in there.

Right now I'm playing almost nightly 1000-1500 point games with my best friend who started 40k at the same time I did. He's slowly building his CSM force up while we both test out various army lists on each other. I foresee him being able to adapt quickly to the LR's, and he's well on his way to being a fantastic strategist so he'll provided some good test games to work out any kinks in my mechanized game. I have 3 boxes of PAGK and 2 of GKT's, and I'll be picking up the LR's after christmas to round out the force. I might pick up a third LR at the same time just to get ready for tournies at the FLGS because they run at 1750 instead of 1500.

new plastic Storm Troopers out in March that no-one's seen yet.

?

... :) really? really really? WAHOO!

Now back on topic: I personally think 2 LRC and a bunch of IST. The LRC do sometimes putter about at 6 inches just to protect the IST if anything.

Then save up to buy yourself 3 razorbacks and 2 boxes of the new plastic Storm Troopers out in March that no-one's seen yet.

Now the eternal question... as I look at my 4 squads of metal stormtroopers (2 IG, 2 Kasrkin) I ask myself.. do I really need more squads of them? :)
