Unit Tactica: Thunderwolf Cavalry

Nightrunner

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I have spent some time playtesting and math-hammering and currently run my Thunderwolf Cavalry in the following configuration.

1 Bolt Pistol / Close Combat Weapon

1 Storm Shield / Close Combat Weapon and Meltabombs

1 Bolt Pistol / Powerfist

1 Storm Shield / Close Combat Weapon

1 Wolf Lord gets attached to them, he has

Wolf Claw

Storm Shield

Thunderwolf mount

Wolf Tail Talisman

Saga of the Warrior Born

Runic Armor

2 Fenrisian Wolves

Melta Bombs

I think 35 points is worth the boost in quality

2xSS absorb up to 2 PF attacks...unless you face another expensive hammer this gives a good chance to nullify highest S attacks

MB gives WL a chance to pop dreadnaughts...one of the few things they fear (believe this is done at I5 but not sure)

Total = 620

This squad costs a fair amount (~ 535pts) but the Wolf Lord really makes them hit hard. Since he is base T5 the wolf lord does not get insta-killed by anything short of S10. The wolf claw is better than a frost blade for the wolf lord in nearly every situation (exceptions are T7 and T9). Especially when he hits a T3 enemy and chooses re-roll to hit. This can quickly catapult his saga up to 10+ bonus attacks. The Fenrisian wolves act as ablative wounds and engage any enemy powerfist/claw models or uberkilly characters so they can't hurt my cavalry. Between the SS on the lord and the SS in the squad they can take most heavy fire coming in, especially if they use cover. All around it is a very durable and hard hitting combination.

Thats a very expensive Wolf Lord though, while I dont disagree with his effictivness I think you would be better served putting Canis in the unit.

At 185 he is like 90 points cheaper. That gives you enough points for another unit of something else.

x5 sniper scouts.

x1 TDA SS TH lone wolf

almost enough for x2 more basic TWC.

But Canis will die much quicker...I see Canis as a troop killer extraordinaire. (no inv, enhances Fennies, and has the ability to have a ton of attacks on many model units)

This would really look good in the Librarium Nightrunner :)

Sigsimund.... I have no idea how to move it there!!!!

I agree with LR. Canis looks great on paper, and up to 1000pts can be really effective at damaging small units and "line" units e.g. basic tac squads, guard etc.

However, two things that make the basic WL better; one, he can have Runic Armour; two, the much-loved storm shield.

Canis will fail one in every 3 wounds that he takes, and is no tougher than a WL. For the extra cost, you might lose an attack, but a canny opponent won't give you loads of opportunities to throw Canis in anyway. Plus, LD 10 is an amazing boost on a unit of TWC, and is just another area that Canis falls down in.

Well luckily there's this super handy guide ;) A Dummy's Guide to Submitting Articles.

You forgot something about the TWC. that i have been doing in 1750 points. I use them as lone wolves, they hunter the isolated units, the bombarders. I use them as assualt snipers. To pick out that defiler hiding behind cover or that devestator squad hiding in cover etc. Or as a frontal spear so that it frees up other targets for my drop pod squads to hit. But primarily i use in 1750 points:

2x Thunder wolves

1x Power fist ( I didn't use thunder hammers as their role is mainly anti-tank and will avoid mc if possible and because i found it hard to fit in the extra 10 points to go up to thunder hammers, which i prefer )

Alongside a drop pod assualt with 3 pods supported by fire support from 2 devestator squads, two priests and a CML.

thanks

Nice tactica dood! pretty much confirmed what I had gathered for myself but its nice to see it written down. I'm playing at Bristol,uk in the vanquish tourney with wolves and i have 5 TWC 1 x thunderhammer (coz of MC and the like, i want the next phase to finish them off as they should hopefully be I1) 2 normal doods 1 with MB and 2 storm shields 1 with bombs also. Interesting fact about saving the special weapon tho. I guess i decided against it because, like you i thought that 2 would have to be the logical limit (after testing i was proven correct) The shear number of shots these guys take is phenomenal. The problem that gets me is not from AT fire but from lots of heavy bolters! forcing saves on Storm shield doods with bolt rounds is heartbreaking!

Might try adding canis - I have already stepped back from taking the WL with all the warrior trimmings. He was awesome but he costs so very very much!
