Brother Gabe
I just got the space wolf battleforce and was thinking about creating a Wolf Lord. I am wanting to make him into a close combat beast, but do to my enexperience with gaming I am unsure what to give him to make him most effective. What is was thinking about giving him was two wolf claws, saga of the warrior born, and a jump pack. He would fly around with my skyclaws and cause havoc. But then I started to think some more, and I am now wondering if getting rid of his ability to shoot is worth it. And also if I should give him a squad of wolf guard instead of skyclaws, or if I should just dump the jump packs and go terminator. Any advice would be appreciated. And anyways, I seem to have to much beer around here than I know what to do with, so anyone who helps can have a beer. :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/188170-creating-my-wolf-lord/ Share on other sites
SamaNagol
Jump Packs on a Wolf Lord is a bit of a waste. If you want mobility give him a Thunderwolf or a Bike. I would recommend Thunderwolf personally. If you want him in a squad then runic armour and a Storm Shield with a Frostblade, Wolf Tooth Necklace and Saga of the Warrior Born is a nice build. Put him with some Wolf Guard and he will beast. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/188170-creating-my-wolf-lord/#findComment-2226759 Share on other sites
Yeti
There are plenty of good builds for CC Wolf Lords, the "best" will largely depend on the rest of your army and what will accompany him. Wolf claws and runic armor is great to accompany Wolf Guard or Grey Hunters. If accompanying termis ... well termi armor with wolf claws. I agree that a Wolf Lord isn't the best choice for Skyclaws. A wolf priest fits much better (and is fluffier). The reroll for preffered enemy gives them some much needed extra punch. As for giving up shooting, it's usually not much of a loss as long as you get the extra attack in CC. Two wolf claws is very good and will make a mess of most infantry. The usefullness of Saga of the Warrior Born will largely depend in what your facing. Against horde armies it can be worth it, but otherwise, I've found it difficult to get much use out of it. So if you're likely to be facing lots of hordes or "in your face" CC armies, go for it. Otherwise Saga of the Bear may be a better investment and with a termi/runic and storm shield, it makes for a very tough fighter! Wildfire
I personally would never give a wolf lord anything to shoot with. A bolt pistol with frost weapon doesn't count as a shooting weapon, it's strictly for an extra attack. Shooting with a wolf lord (and most every SM HQ except psychics) is a waste of potential. Godhead
Gone are the days of our HQs carrying heavy weapons, and other than combi weapons, there isn't much to choose from that a standard trooper doesn't already have. We don't have access to the special ammo so that really only leaves picking up a plasma pistol to bring something semi unique to your force, which typically ends up not being worth the points spent and is still a pistol adding to your close combat ability Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/188170-creating-my-wolf-lord/#findComment-2226898 Share on other sites
Lord Ragnarok
I'd only give him shooting weapon if he is drop podding. I'm still a firm believer in not wasting your drop pod turn with loading up on CC goodies, especially with a BS 5 character and aggressive podding. Brother Gabe
So what should i give my wolf guard? Or should I put him with some blood claws? And what would be the best way to get him into the middle of the fight as fast as possible? TiguriusX
I know this answer isn't helpful but it really depends. The fastest guaranteed way to get into combat is a DP or LR Drop pod is cheaper...gets you the closest on turn 1 and allows you to fire weapons...but you can't assault until turn 2 Landraider doesn't let you assault until turn 2 as well...but you are much safer on the way in at a much greater price If you want your Wolf Lord to fire after stepping off the drop pod one option is a plasma pistol. It is pricy but still helps you in CC (+1 attack if using frostblade) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/188170-creating-my-wolf-lord/#findComment-2226961 Share on other sites
Yeti
A Land Raider is about the surest way to get him into CC. If you've got a heavy mech list, rhinos do the job too. Personally I'd stick him with grey hunters. It more fitting for him to be accompanying seasoned warriors. Wolf guard would be even better, but they get expensive ... though they hit like a ton of bricks.
