Asrech
Hey guys, old to the forum but new to the posting :) So what better way than to start by sharing some works in progress! Here is one of my latest projects, the Ares. Figured since this will be a one-of-a-kind land raider I might as well have some fun with it and really try to make it into a center-piece for the army. It's made from a LR base, with a vindicator front pannel and siege shield. The LR was bought second hand and already built, so there is some bad assembly sadly. I thought the siege shield looked to small compared to the bulk of the land raider so I added to it with plasticard to make it wider, and later on a lot of greenstuff combined with bitz from the cities of death sprues to give it some "soul". Now I know the doors are BT but those were the only ones I had, and throughout my army I have decals and icons from other chapters ( shoulderpads mostly ). To me these are to represent tokens and honours given from other chapters after joined missions and campaigns. There is also a assaultcannon for the front hatch which has some details on it, nothing big but it fits with the rest of the theme. http://i188.photobucket.com/%20albums/z104/Asrech/AresWIP025.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/%20albums/z104/Asrech/AresWIP011.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/%20albums/z104/Asrech/AresWIP017.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/%20albums/z104/Asrech/AresWIP018.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/%20albums/z104/Asrech/AresWIP022.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/%20albums/z104/Asrech/AresWIP020.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/%20albums/z104/Asrech/AresWIP021.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/%20albums/z104/Asrech/AresWIP015.jpg I'll be posting more of my stuff on apropriate parts of the forum in days to come, so you'll be able to see what color scheme I have for the army. C&C are much appreciated!ss Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/188262-land-raider-ares-gate-of-redemption/ Share on other sites
Brother Ducarte
Hey mate. Love it! Especially the ornateness of the front with the statues. I think it's gonna look awesome when it's painted. Btw, how did u sculpt those chains? Everytime I try to sculpt them they look terrible but yours look great! Good work mate! BD. Asrech
Thanks! I'll be posting here as the painting comes along. In the back of my head I just kept thinking about how ornate larger constructions thend to be in the imperium ( titans, spaceships etc ) so I wanted to try and apply that on a smaller scale. +++ Moved the tutorial into the tutorial section +++ Any other comments or ideas? The tank has yet to get any paint, even spray, so there is room to add more. Alys Dwr
Very nice landraider, looking forward to some paint on it. And that is the exact same way i do chains, with the very same tools no less. I think i saw a tutorial for it years ago using real sculpting tools and made do with what i had. It's great to see i'm not the only one! Asrech
I was sitting around for a while with the greenstuff not sure what to do to attach the sword to the roof, and started playing around with different ways of making rope and chains, came up with this. Real simple, but with great results IMHO. Been using it on a number of things as details since then ;) Just need to get some white spray before I start hitting this thing with the brush. My problem being tht the white spray I thought I bought turned out to be a chaos black with a white cap... -.- ... Thanks for the comments guys! smallvictory
Nice center peice you have there, great tutorial as well. You have given yourself plenty of details to paint you brave soul, good luck. The only advice I have is to get your hands on some brown stuff to fill the gaps. It's great because you can file/sand it down. brother varen
What bits did you use for the twin linked flamer sponsons? It looks great can't wait to see it painted. Asrech
They are scratch built using the baneblade heavy flamers and the normal "hood" covering land raider sponsons, cut in half down the midle and then glued back together. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/188262-land-raider-ares-gate-of-redemption/#findComment-2228186 Share on other sites
Dejay
Amazing LR. I love the flames with the skulls in. It looks very good indeed. My only criticism is that the flamers don't look meaty enough for that LR. How about twin linked Flame Storm cannons? :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/188262-land-raider-ares-gate-of-redemption/#findComment-2228191 Share on other sites
Asrech
I would have loved to ( Flamestorm cannons are every Salamander players wet dream ;) ) but since the Ares is only fitted with twin heavy flamers I think it would just feel wrong to mount up beefy flamers and then they just go *pff....* And had it had the flamestorm cannons the points would no doubt be higher as well. :P *link* to the Ares datasheet from GW. Montuhotep
Now this, this is special. One of the few Ares models that I've seen even remotely close to being finished and this is a very good one indeed, especially the siege-shield! Excellent work, I say, excellent work. Asrech
Brother Martemis; The combination of a missus and warhammer tends to have that impact on the wallet every now and then. I'm considering myself lucky with my girl. Well I wouldn't mind seeing a few more of them out there. With the oncoming hordes of new nidz they will be needed! Asrech
Sadly I do not since the Ares has no transport cap. All room is used for the Demolisher shells is fires. I am soon going to start a new project which will be a mechanicus themed tactical swuad (chests and a shoulderpad from the tank sprue ). The sergeant I already have done, and I'll be getting a tac squad box this saturday, along with some white spray so I can give this guy a layer before I start working my brush on it. My only question is if I should stick with my normal color scheme or if I should give it a custom one.. Thinking a lot more black. (my normal scheme kan be seen in the army presentation as well as hall of honour where my dreads came up just a while back ). Thanks! RazakelXIII
Woooow. This is really pretty. :) At first I thought the frag launchers shouldn't be there, but now I'm kinda thinking it looks like the tank has scales. The shield is great as is the fire, and the banners are a nice touch. As Paladin already said, an Ares is a rare enough sight without being this well-converted. Can't wait to see it all painted up. If you're looking for paint suggestions, those Cities of Death skullwall bitz bring H.R. Giger paintings to mind what with all the tubes. Painting them a glossy bluish black might go nice with all the fire, though you do lose the ability to say "my shield wall is made of friggin' human skulls." Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/188262-land-raider-ares-gate-of-redemption/#findComment-2228754 Share on other sites
Asrech
Thanks :) And now that you mention it, there sure is a bitt of H.R. Giger feel to it, but since there is so much flames it takes away from it since his backgrounds usually go in his "normal" theme. The fraglaunchers, I'm glad you noticed that as well ;) The though was part scales, part extra armour, since I wanted the front to be as armoured as I could get it without it getting to obstructed. Well the thought was more to be able to say "My shield wall is the friggin' Gates of Hell!" But hey, that works too! ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/188262-land-raider-ares-gate-of-redemption/#findComment-2228956 Share on other sites

Korraz
Okay, this is just plain awesome, it actually forced me to make my first post. Is a tutorial out there for the flames? Or are they just basically "inverted" fur? Asrech
;) Im very happy with how it came out, and I do consider it one of, if not the, best conversion I've done. Korraz, Well my friend, welcome to the active part of the forum :) Glad I could digg you out :( The flames are as you say just inverted fur, smear out some greenstuff, and poke it (for me it was with my knife) intill you get the texture you want. As you can see the texture isn't the same all over since I don't really use a special way of doing it :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/188262-land-raider-ares-gate-of-redemption/#findComment-2229808 Share on other sites
