What happens if you take 3 wolfguard and have 2 units to attach them to. Does the third stay alone?

Yes, he becomes a unit of 1.

A lone WG is legal? Really? :) Can we choose to have a squad of unattached WG now?

Yes, we can.

For clarity: You can't buy a Wolf Guard (or any number of them, in fact), and just run each model around as a seperate unit. However, if after assigning Wolf Guards as pack leaders (the only way you can reduce the squad, other than casualties), you have a single Wolf Guard left, you can run him around as a single-model unit. If you wanted to field multiple one-man-units of Wolf Guard, you'd have to buy more than one Wolf Guard pack, and distribute the rest of the members among your other squads.

I do not know how worthwhile this is. I've kind of been wanting to do it - leave one Wolf Guard all by his lonesome to tromp around in Terminator armour with an assault cannon, storm shield, and Mark of the Wulfen, to generally be annoying. I don't think it would work very well, though - it would sort of be like a really crappy Lone Wolf who could carry a heavy weapon. I suppose that if you wanted one guy to run around and be obnoxious, though, and didn't have an Elites slot left, it could work.

How did this ever make it to 2 pages... its really simple.

If you want wolfguard you MUST buy 3. Doesn't matter if you only want 1 pack leader, 3 is the minumum unit size.

Once you have brought them you can then decide which WG will lead which squad. Only one WG can be assigned to lead each squad.

After all the WG you want have been split off any that are left for a single unit.

Thats it, nothing else needs to be said. So you can have a single wolf guard running around, but only if you have already got at least 3 WG and the rest have been split to lead squads.
