My first Tactical Squad so far...

Well here's what I have done so far for my first shot at painting minis. Still have 3 more to go for this squad and then I'm going to start working on a dread. C&C welcome and appreciated as I'm trying to get better! Not pro quality obviously but I'm pretty happy for the way they came out. The sergeant isn't 100% done yet, and I'm not sure if I should add anything to the banner. Maybe a white salamander head in the flames, or I was also thinking about putting the "3" on the back corner of the flag as well. Any ideas?

This is your first attempt at paining minis? i should stop looking at these threads, when some peoples 1st attempts are better that some models serving in my army tis disheartening. now, commentary... Excellent start and welcome to both the painting side of the hobby and the WIP board.

Yes, I think a white salamander head in the flames would be incredibly impressive, but why the 3? 3rd squad/company? am I missing some key fluff element? looks a nice crisp gold, could just be the lighting but the green looks a little dark, even for sallys.

Also, do you have any cardboard boxes still lying around after the holiday season? turning one into a photo booth by adding a sheet of paper would mean both clearer pictures and a more professional touch with is an excellent ego boost, I mean allows you to notice little details in your photos more easily...

Haha yeah this is my first attempt! Thanks for the comments, I think the green gets a little darker when I do the wash and I haven't done much drybrushing of lighter greens over the basecoat, I think I might do that on the 2nd tac squad I do. I would put the 3 on the back since they're from 3rd company and was thinking that would help command forces in the rear keep track of who is where, but I didn't pick the 3rd for any particular reason. I do have to make myself a photo booth and get some better lights so hopefully the pics will turn out better next time.

Argh way better than the first one I did and its only taken a few months to get my painting skills to the standard of being able to call them marines lol :D

anyway they look awesome very good for a first attempt I think the sergeants head is a bit dark but thats just me lol

Welcome! And heck you're of to a good start my friend :)

A nice solid standard, and if you keep it up for the whole army you will have an army you can feald with pride.

A tip would probably be that when you base your figs, after applying glue, run your thumb alond the edge of the base to get off glue from the slanting side, and after adding the gravel, brush it of again. Then you'll get a clear edge between the gravel and the slanting side, which in my opinion will add to the overall look :)

This is a good job for a first attempt. The only thing I would point out is that the green on the sergeant's greaves looks a little patchy. Other than that, they are well done. Keep it up. :)

Thanks! I think the patchyness comes from the washes I've been using. The green is actually a green primer from army painter, and they start out pretty smooth. I can't seem to get the washes into all the recessed areas on their legs before some of it dries up, so I think I'm going to go back and drybrush the dark areas with snot green.

Thanks for the basing tip, I'd like to do something a little cooler for my next ones, I think the gravel that I have is too big for the look I was going for!

Nice, you pulled off the flame effects nicely. Their green is nice and gritty.

Sergeant's base! :)

Thanks! I still have a few things left to do with the sargeant, he needs a chapter badge, his purity seals painted and definitely his base!

Very nice Salamanders there my friend. Did you just paint the Chapter badge orange or something special?

Most peoples Salamanders ive seen (including mine) just use the white badge for all the companies.

Well done. Are you going to be painting the bases or just leaving them that colour.

Thanks! I used the transfers on these guys, and just painted a dark orange over the top but it ended up a little more red than I originally planned. I'm still undecided on the bases, I did add some colors and a brown wash on the gravel and it has kind of a muddy appearance. I think I'm going to keep the bases this color for this squad, and I'd like to try something a little cooler on the next squad, hopefully those turn out better! I'm not too sure what I could do to these bases to make them a bit better.
