Planetstrike and Cityfight.

Anyone have good experiances with the smaller 40k expansions? Personally Im quite a fan of both. Do you have any favored tactics with either? Do you find it a good change of pace? Do the cool terrain possibilities get you excited?

Personally Im quite fond of my almost completed Mjolnir Class Fortress for planetstrike- its a five bastion Indomitable Fortress, set up in the shape of a Hammer :) and completely covered in heavy bolters.

The door is in the {} section, while the {.} section is actually a stock GW bastion kit, a bit wider than the connecting peice and usually full of Long Fangs for the excellant field of veiw. ML on the right hammer head, TLLC on the left, a Coms station or Lascannon on the door section and a pair of quad guns usually on the walkway, but sometimes the tower *still fiddling with that*. Its perfect for a good 1500 throw down.

I just got cities of death and had a practice game with my mate's tau, :D i havent built any terrain yet but i would like to, so insted we used books and boxes among other things, i quite enjoyed it myself, the sewer rats stratagem was funny to use against him, i plan to play a four way game of it this weekend vs tau, nids, and blood angels on real terrain :)

I have played 7 games of regular 40K with my BT Foot against my brother's Orks.

Then we have started playing with my new BT Mech.

After that, how many more games of vanilla can you play against one person?

I am surprised these two variants don't get played more often, and as a result, have a section here on B&C.

Why do you suppose people don't bother?

Well the fact that cityfight is extremely old could be one reason. If you meant cities of death, its also kind of old. I have the codex and still play some games with it though. I've never played planetstrike however, so I couldn't tell ya.

They require learning an extra set of rules, making/buying some cool terrain, and more conversation with your opponent before hand.

In short, people are lazy.

Though I know with Planetstrike some people are thrown off by the "epicness" of it. Seriously, whoevers turn it is often seems to have the win in hand, with entire units evaporating and bastions cracking and giant weapons smashing down.... and then the other player gets their turn and you realise the damage wasnt actually that bad, and the games still going smoothly.

I've just ordered both. About time I tried them out. Hopefully they will add more dimension to our games and campaigns.

Which one do you recommend I try out first? From what I've read on this thread they both seem good. Is one of them more readily playable than the other? Is one of them more enjoyable that the other?, or does it depend on what terrain I have available?

Well if you have a bunch of ruins already, then Cityfight is more playable with just the book. Planetstrike requires less going over the rules, but requires more time building terrain as you need atleast one bastion to fight over.

Cities of Death was built for 4rth edition, so theres a few things that need to be adressed here and there, and some strategems that just arent useful at all- like command center thatll give you counterattack for one unit near it or let you pass a target priority test.

Bastions arent that hard to make though, and the model for them isnt expensive by any means either... Id suggest an aegis defense line as a great deal too, wether your make your own bastions or not.

So yeah, if your good with terrain, or find you have alot of motivation then Id go planetstrike first, then cities of death.

About 3 years ago we ran a larger city of death campaign. It was a blast. Yet the meleey armies had a bit of an advantage. Nids were hard to beat for some of the guys. I liked shooting down on tanks thou. Makes more sence.

As to planet strike. My buddy Chris is big into it, yet I have yet to play a game. It seems to me who ever goes first will have the advantage. With Deep strike and a charge yu golden if you go first. Drop in kill a 3rd of the stuff in shooting and then more in melee and that protects you from his shooting till you next wave drops in and does the same. I don't know thou. I have yet to play any games.
