6 Thunderwolves

I have converted the Lions from 3 High Elf Chariots to Thunderwolves.

This gives me 6 saddles to fill.

I want to prepare them for tournament/all-comers uses.

What would my wolf brothers recommend as the most flexible combination of standard cavalry (with weapons loadout) and HQs or Special characters? I wouldn't necessarily field them all every game, but wouldn't really want to have to rework them for different size lists.

Having looked at others suggestions, it seems that 5 TWC would be excessive so maybe 3 or 4 TWC, one with Powerfist or Thunder hammer.

2 HQs - 1 Wolf Lord (who could also play as Canis) and either a Wolf Priest or Iron Priest. What should they carry?

I have considered magnetising at the waist, to give additional flexibility, but would rather not have to do this.

Having put quite a bit of work into these they will be the centrepiece of my army, so I will choose other units to suit. But will probably be a very mobile list with rhinos or pods. Weak on armour with a LR Crusader, a single Predator and 2 Dreads to choose from.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I am planning to run a 4 man TWC unit, then have another as a Wolf Lord, and another as an Iron Priest. But for the 4 standard guys I will be using;

BP + CCW

BP + CCW + Melta Bombs

CCW + Storm Shield

Thunder Hammer/Power Fist + Storm Shield

or something to that effect. make sure the guys ahve individual weapons loadout to abuse wound allocation.

My Lord will be running Frost Axe and Storm Shield, or thunder hammer + storm shield.

I've got 5 TWC and 1 TW Wolflord.

The lord always goes with a frostblade and bolt pistol (normally with Saga of the Warrior Born and a belt of russ) to maximize his number of attacks.

3 TWC are glued with bolt pistol and chainsword.

2 Have magnetized arms to allow me to swap in some storm shields (though I haven't felt the need so far). Of these two, one is boltpistol and sword and the other normally goes with a power fist.

For a unit of 5 TWC it's relatively cheap and the number of power fist attacks surprises most opponents.

If GW bring out thunderwolves i will get them, but otherwise i won't really bother, as i can get GW stuff cheaper, and don't want to spend loads of money and time converting a hit or miss unit, which i think i wouldn't use very much...

what success have people had with them so far?

i would imagine a TW based army could work quite well...with 3 squads of 4 maybe? but then that could end up costing you 900 points....

Sure, they can be a little tricky to get into a fight, but once they're there they hit like a ton of bricks thrown by a tornado... on a wolf

As for using more than one squad of them.... not too sure, I think that would just be over kill. With the sizes of their bases it's hard enough to co-ordinate movement with 5 or 6 of them. I like to pair them with other fast moving assaulty troops - like sky claws or a fenrisian wolf pack.

Personally, I find them a nice centerpiece unit - they're unique to SWs and can be a fun, effective unit that doesn't scream cheese like nob bikers.

The size of the bases doesmake TWC awkward in numbers. I run a WLord w/Frostblade and BP, TWC w/ThHmr and SShield, TWC w/PlasP and Chainswd and TWC with BP and Chainswd. Depending upon the mission, I use them as a mobile assault unit versus non-TDA infantry or to finish off TDA that have been attrited to only a few models. An alternative use is to put them in reserve and use them as a counterattack force versus units podding or teleporting into my rear area.
