Plasma pistols

Only really worth it on models with BS5 or better nowadays. It's too expensive to risk missing with and since you'll probably only get to fire it once or twice a game, you want those hits to count. I like it on Wolf Lords as long as they're not mounted on Thunderwolves. The good thing about the plasma pistol is that it really only needs to kill one Marine or similarly priced model per game to pay itself off, and it counts as an additional close combat weapon when it comes to assault, so you're not losing any close combat ability. A plasma pistol and Frost Blade can go together quite nicely.
I have one in all my GH packs, mostly because I've got the models, but the extra S7 AP2 shot is really worth it I think. In my meltasquad it kind of adds the 2nd special wpn that I loose because of the WG, and in my dual plasma packs it is just nice to smile at the enemy when you say that you're gonna roll 7 plasma shots =D (2x Pgun, Ppistol+WG CombiP).

My previous codex list had tons of em, but I removed them now. HOWEVER, I think I may want in a rhino plasma toting pack supporting two other melta or melta/flamer GH packs. 2xPG's and PP for 5 plasma shots. (they are rolling with the other two rhino packs so 12 inch range should not be an issue with the PP)

Also, I'd consider them in GH DP packs, since you need to maximize shooting when you drop.

Plasma Pistols are probably a little too expensive, especially considering the added risk of Overheat; 10 points would probably be more appropriate. However, despite that, I still include them in my army.

I've got one in each of two forward Consolidation force Grey Hunter Packs. They are good for augmenting the Melta Gun in the pack, and the Combi-Melta on the Wolf Guard Leader.

I've got a Plasma Pistol and Power Fist on the Wolf Guard Leader for my Wolf Scout pack - the Plasma Pistol is good for augmenting the Melta Gun in that pack, too.

I also have the models for them but I've yet to use them. I just keep finding that after I remove the pp's in my units I'm able to squeeze out enough points for a second pack of scouts or something I find more effective. I do think 15 pts. is a bit high, I would have liked to see them priced at 10 and I think they would be more viable. I do agree that it depends a lot on your army list especially if you drop pod. It might be a good idea to drop in with meltas at first to blow up transports and then have the reserve pods come in with double plasma gun+pp.
In the past, I've shied away from using plasma anything thanks to a few (years worth of) bad rolling. But now, most of my game group is MEQ and they started throwing lots of plasma guns and plasma pistols at me, so I started using them back. I love them now, hardly ever die to a '1' in shooting, and in most games against my MEQ enemies, it makes for a real bloodbath with mutually assured plasma death being spat back and forth

I like plasma weapons in all their forms, especially the cannon. I do like the pistol in certain situations, like others here, on commanders and such when that extra punch is needed, but you still want the attack bonus for having two weapons.

I run my GH packs with two plasma guns a piece; seems to work out quite well against a lot of things, especially my brother-in-law's 'nidzilla list. He cries every time my GHs get within plasma range... :)

So as a follow up question which of these squads would you take:

7 Grey Hunters [melta gun, wolf standard, mark of the wulfen, plasma pistol]

8 Grey Hunters [melta gun, wolf standard, mark of the wulfen]

Both would be joined by a wolf guard with combi melta and fist. Mounted in a rhino or a landraider.

I would never take a plasma pistol at 15 points, or even 10 points. A plasma pistol is clearly not worth as much as a plasma gun, in my opinion, so it should cost less. I'd always rather have the extra wound, bolter shots, and CC ability from an extra squad member over a plasma pistol.

I'm not so sure, at best it's situational. A plasma pistol is a "pistol" (duh) while a plasma gun is rapid fire. The plasma gun can fire more shots or at longer range, but you can't assault. The pistol also provides you with an extra CCW. This becomes more important for models like the wolf lord who generally only have a BP and CCW, in which case the question isn't so much plasma pistol vs plasma gun, but instead plasma pistol vs bolt pistol.
