mike208
I am a relatively new player to 40k. I have played several games with my orks against my buddies marines. I have always footslogged them, but did end up purchasing a couple trukks and a battlewagon as well as some bikers, but I have yet to use them in a game yet. Heck they aren't all fully assembled yet or painted. But I mainly started with the orks because of the cheapness of AoBR. I enjoy them and will continue to play them. But I have been waiting for the space wolves new dex since I started playing. I have read their books and just love their style. I love the new dex too. I really wanted to just footslog them like I did my orks. And while I know this is possible and some people do it quite effectively. I also know that they don't have quite as many bodies to survive the walk to the enemy. I have been struggling to build my first wolf list for a while now, I'm sure some of you have seen my previous posts. I guess what I am looking for is advice on how to proceed. I honestly don't fully understand how to effectively use rhinos or any transport for that matter. I understand they offer a quicker trip across the board, but I know they can help in other ways too, just not sure how exactly. I also know I should probably learn to play with them so I can learn how to defend against them. My question is do I just put together a small footslogging army for now until I can get the funds/time to add transports. Should I use the one I do have in my list, or is it pointless since it will just get shot being only one? Would adding 1 more make it more effective enough to be worth it? Or should I add some drop pods instead? I know a lot of these are subjective/personal choice answers, which is why I am only looking for advice, not necessarily to be told how I should play. Also if anyone has a link or just basic info on how to effectively use/defends against transports that would be helpful. To add a bit more info, as it stands now I have only been playing against my buddies marines, which he has since converted to blood angels. We are still learning the rules and learning the game in general. As of yet we haven't even started playing missions, just been playing straight annihilation. I do think we will start playing th emissions more now that we both have some game sunder our belt. But as they say, annihilation is always a victory condition and thats probably how I will still play. If I can win by objectives/kill points thats great. But if I can wipe my opponent fromt he board, even better. Thanks in advance to anyone who reads this who thing and any insight you may provide. CainTheHunter
Some remarks . I've been playing footslogging list couple of years ago - it was 13th Company and they were able to teleport around the table. Now, everything is mechanised and You need something to keep Your troops alive. You can build footslogging army, but then You must focus on other elements on Your list, making them fast to annoy and harrass the enemy, while the mass is running down on them - in my previous list this role was made by Storm claw bikers (lots of them) and Fenrisian wolves. But the rules were different and unit types are different now. Thing to start of - You either use lots of Rhinos/other transports or Drop Pods en masse - not both. IMO good idea is to drop pod close combat multimelta dreadnought while troops in Rhinos are closing in. But not troops probably, because drop pod assault is a bit unpredictable. If You go with Rhinos, better buy Razorback kits, because You can always switch them around from one transport to another - just don't glue in the hatch. Regarding Rhino tactics - search Youtube for space wolves tactics and rhino tactics - it's better to see it than try to explain. mike208
Proxy your trucks as Rhinos so you can learn how to use them before you buy them. My buddy also has a rhino or 2 that as of now I don't think he is actually fielding. It may be painted red, but I do have access to 1 or 2, plus mine and like you said, the trukks. My only problem with fielding them, is that I don't really understand how to properly use them, other then to drive them across the board towards the enemy. Yeti
As far as footslogging goes, keep in mind that marines have much better armor than orks, which helps soak up some of the shooting. With regards to rhinos, they are a pretty decent transport for their points. In any size game, the "secret" to using transports is target saturation. Having many different mechanized threats on the table will force you're opponent to make choices and, in the end, some of your vehicles will not get damaged. It'll greatly depend on what point range you're playing, but if you go for a mechanized list, the great majority of your army should be either armor or have a transport. As for actually using rhinos, someone could probably write a textbook about it ... A few things I've learned over the years: - Take extra armor. A transport that can't move isn't useful. - Use cover. Smoke launchers are one use, after that you'll need some other source to get a cover save. - Make cover. Once empty, rhinos make great mobile cover, either for other rhinos or for the troops that have disembarked. - Don't forget that they're a kill point. And a relatively easy one at that! Once the troops have been dropped off, get your butt behind cover. - Escort the enemy. If you can break an enemy squad, escort it off the board with your rhino. As long as it's withing 6", even marines can't rally. - Objective denial. In non kill point missions, rhinos can contest objectives, though they can't claim them. Use that 12" move to rob your opponent of objectives on the last turn. The advice to buy razorbacks and not glue the hatches is quite a good one. Especially in smaller games razorbacks can provide a lot of firepower and in larger games, they can either be used as rhinos or kept as razors and used to transport small squads.
