Sternguards - Dead and back.

Well the Ares gave me some much needed inspiration to raise my standard of painting, as well as drawing me back to the glody that is a darker colour sheme...

So today my Sternguards have been in a bath, all 25 of them. Still soaking and just about to get hit by the brush I decided that if my sternguards are getting a new scheme then they also need a spiffy new sergeant!

So after having been at the bottom of the bit box for about a year and been covered in all kinds of paint ( bought him from a friend ) this sergeant got his robes cleaned and repaired and now stands awaiting paint himself.

Now the rest of my Sternguard are made using the DA vet sprue, so they all have full robes ( including hoods, some plastic, some greenstuff ), so I used GS to fill out the tabard to a full robe. He didn't have hand or weapon so he got a custom combi-flamer and a new powerweapon.¨

The old colos were red robes with white/sephia and green armour. The new will be black robes and green weapon casing (since the entire 1st company will be getting baths/re-paint, see terminator thread for their scheme ).

He is still a bit WIP and once the GS dries up I'm going in to clean up, then base him. I'll be posting here as I get further along the line with teh sternguards :cuss

Thanks :)

Yeah the small and compact version of combi-weapons look nice, but I think the spirit of marine gear is more crude, bulky and killy :P

I've been considering it ( and am doing it more so since I can't seem to get the sword in the right angle ) but I have yet to find my PA lightning claw.. I know it's here somewhere. I didn't do it from the start since I like the metal figg and didn't want to carve in it too much, but well see what happens.

Yeah that's why I didn't attach the canister for the flamer, so the small canister on the side is supposed to be the fuel for the single shot flamer, and added a biger drum-mag for the bolter.

When painted I don't think you'll be able too see the difference in the weapons as much so it should look more balanced then.

Cheers!

As you see, daddy got himself a new toy! Couldn't find my PA claw, so I took a terminator one, cut ot of at the wrist, drilled out a whole ( since I have a drill that is as thick as a marines arm :tu: and put it on, fits like a glove! ). Then a quick GS for the cable and voila, claws for the sergeant.

And here we have some boys that are finally out of their baths. Note that there are still a tiny bit of paint left, and that I will be cleaning up the moldlines before priming them! The bases will be done as the one painted guy you see ( that was hiding in a corner during bath time :) ).

Here is my old color scheme

And here is a very wip of how the new one will be

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/SternguardsWip011.jpg

The black will be given highlights, like my ares or terminators. Then some metal and the lenses, and that's about it.

C&C very much appreciated guys :)

Very small update today, got all the moldlines fixed yesterday, as well as added a few details to the troops, pouches and helmets ( hanging from the back back on the ones without helmets on ). Got gravel on all bases, so today I'm going to prime them all and hopefully finish the first guy to see how they'll look.

Also got an old friend out from the bottom of the bitz box, into a acidbath and handed him two arms.

My fav is the heavy flamer, it's friggin big, but since no other PA in the codex can have 'em ( except LatD ) I figured I might beef it up a little :P

Yeah I liked the sword pose as well, but couldn't get it straight and in line with his hand, and that would have bugged me to no end.

Here's an old captain that I resurected and converted yesterday, he will probably be the one I field when I want the sternguards to have daddy with them.

And the third sergeant, no combi-weapon.

Hopefully a more ineresting update soon :)

Cheers!

i really like your work brother sternguard marines are awsome i always field them when i play as a loyalist(choke) but having them all combi meltas is just gonna hurt any tanks and new nids when they play lol.

all the sergents are fab i like taking lightning claws myself i give them to my raptor champs.

could you tell me what you used to strip your plastic marines as i need to strip some of mine down without them melting

many thanks and keep up the great work

I must admit I like the Captains combi-flamer design far more than the sergeants. Just looks to bulky to me on the sergeants version.

Looking good so far. :)

Ah yes, and a question, where is the claw on the Captain from?

TDA

Thanks for the comments guys.

Loken86: I went to HomeDepot and found Möstenböcker's lift off 5, Latex Based oaint remover, it's about 7sh dollars I think. I put all the marines in two glass jars, poured the remover in the jars untill they were filled ( and I was out of remover ), put the lid on and let them set for a few hours. On my test mini I sprayed it down and let it be in a sealed container over night, no damages.

I'd still recommend trying it on a spare model first to see if you get the effect you want. I found no issues with it though when I tested for the following:

Damages to plastic, nothing, though seems to leave black primer on somewhat.

Damages to metal, nothing.

Damages to greenstuff, nothing, though does seem to leave white primer.

Damages to glue, plastic nothing. Superglue might be affected since a few arms fell of but not all, so mabe.

Damages to paintability ( being able to paint the model afterwards ), nothing.

TheDarkApostle: Well for me that's half of the deal about combi-weapons since fluffwise I don't see them being a striktly one shot only, but instead a bulker version with a few pops in the clip. Not as much as a real spec weapon, but a little more juice than just one. And that they are more indicidual, some might be the same battern ( the 4 combi-flamers ) whereas others are unique builds.

And indeed it is an old terminator claw that I sadly cut up. Ordered a bunch from GW a year or so ago ( think you still can on their bits section ). :o

Brother Alucard: Happy to have you around :P

Hehe dubble update :cuss

Well didn't get much done tpday since I've been sick as the proverbial dog, not much fun. But I did get to finish the test marine for the color scheme, and I like it.

The only thing I'm considering right now is going over the robe with hardcoat to give it the shine, and wondering if that would look like leather or if it would just go straight to latex...

A leather robe is cool, a latex robe is slaanesh.

Cheers!

I'd recommend just going to a supply store (like homedepot) where they sell stuff for home maintenance. Simply ask for fluids ment to clean paint from plastic etc. Just make sure that it isnt flammable, cause if it is it will likely eat the plastic!

I bought 3-4 different types of stuff and tried it on sprayed pieces of sprue ( same plastic, but I wont miss it ). The first obliderated the plastic, the second made it soft, the third did nothing at all and the fourth worked like a charm ( with the aid of a stiff toothbrush ).

There is a topic for paint removing somewhere around here as well that is worth checking out.

Good luck :P

Just primed the first batch of 7, 19 more to go, then the fun can begin!

Everyone primed and gone over with chaos black, so total black-ness it is. I'll be starting on the first 5 tonight.

The sergeants + captain

And another project, a WIP objective "Fallen Hero". The plastic rubble will later be coverd with greenstuff to resemble a robe ( had no legs and don't want to waste a ton of greenstuff to fill out the base.

Another old friend that was washed after years in the bit box, and got a Ironclad banner. Now the question is what kind of weapon to give him....

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/SternguardsWippaint016.jpg

looking great so far, im looking forward to seeing them all painted

i love the fallen hero objective marker, it really does have a special look about it.

the banner guy you have looks awesome, as for the weapon im pretty sure the model came with a bolter pointing down, that what mine has, if not i think a power sword always looks cool on a banner bearer, i dont knwo why though...

keep up the great work ;)

Sorry for the lack of updates my friends, been a lot going on with sickness, family visits and me getting sidetracked by other projects

The last day I've been working on my terminators ( used to be magnetised, but no more )

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/SternguardsWippaint2002.jpg

I've also been greenstuffing at the objective, so he now has a robe ( and a foot! ). Did forget it at the store though, so no pics yet -.-

But there has been some progress! I've done the greens on the first group of 9 ( out 0f 27 ).

Now I'm working on the captain as well as the sternguards, and I plan on doing his scheme a little different ( more white ) so that he stands out more, and can be used besides with sternguards, but what do you guys think about the two sergeants with capes, should I leave them black as the robes, or do them green as the captain ( to make the sergeants stand out more )?

Let me know what you think!

While it may be a bit premature of me, given how little of it's painted, I would recommend you use a darker green for your highlight. At the moment, it gives the models a sort of day-glo look. Now, that may be what you're looking for, but it's just that I'm used to Sally's being darker.
