Marshal Wilhelm
With regards to the HH series, I know that these books should be read in order; 1. Horus rising 2. False gods 3. Galaxy in flames 4. Flight of the Eisenstein How about Fulgrim, Descent of Angels, Legion, Battle for the Abyss, Mechanicum, Tales of the Heresy and Fallen Angels? Do they need to be read in order? and if not in relation to the whole of them, how about in relation to one another - ie, DoA before FA? Thank you for your help. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/189610-reading-the-hh-books/ Share on other sites
Jarl Kjaran Coldheart
past the first four, they dont need to be read in order, except for descent of angels and fallen angels. i would hold off on ToH until after i read the two DA books, but it isnt required. (one of the short stories on ToH is about the clash of new DA and terran DA...i found it better read of the angel books myself.) Donkey Kong
as Wolf Lord Kieran, said, after the first few books, you don't need to read them in order, however, I'll disagree with Fulgrim. As of now, the core series basically goes: Horus Rising --> False Gods --> Galaxy in Flames --> Flight of the Eisenstein --> Fulgrim Some books are paired, I've read Descent of Angels, but found it lacking, apparently Fallen Angels completes the pair. Prospero Burns and A Thousand Sons out later this year are another pair. Just remember to read Descent before Fallen. Legion and Battle for the Abyss are stand alone stories, albeit they surround important events in the Heresy. Mechanicum seems to have come out a little early, or periodically I think it did, considering the events of the novel. Tales of Heresy is a collection of short stories, make of that what you will. I have yet to read it. The Dark King and The Lightning Tower, Raven's Flight and Thunder from Fenris are audiobooks and as far as I am aware, having only listened to The Dark King and The Lightning Tower, these stories are short and probably don't have to be heard in any particular order. swooshfinn
I am having a hard time with Eisenstein, just finding the wording/rhythem/grammar choppy. Otherwise the first three went by fairly quickly for me... I was kind of surprised how well they flowed from one to another despite the different authors Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/189610-reading-the-hh-books/#findComment-2248226 Share on other sites
Marshal Wilhelm
I am having a hard time with Eisenstein, just finding the wording/rhythem/grammar choppy. Otherwise the first three went by fairly quickly for me... I was kind of surprised how well they flowed from one to another despite the different authors The first three were good. I think that the order they came out with coincides with their quality. (1st excellent, 2nd very good, 3rd good) FotE was a bit disjointed as is Fulgrim (which I am reading atm) but they are both around False Gods with regards to quality, imo. Horus was very attractive to me in Horus rising, and I could see why everyone was happy to follow him as the Warmaster in the stead of the Emperor. Reading Fulgrim is fleshing out the moments you see in between Murder and Istvaan 3. I am even enjoying Eidolon and Lucius (even though they act like real tools <_< ) My local Library has them. Pretty sweet way to try before I buy (if I ever do....) Capt. Lysander
The first 3 are indeed part of a more connected series of events, therefore the authors must have spent a lot of time in connecting their stories :P. The other books are, as KingHongKong pointed out, may come in pairs, so should be read that way. Others are just standoffs to represent and depict a certain legion during the Horus Heresy, and before. This gives us a more indepth look about the legions themselves, and their interior workings.
