Russ forgive me

So with the upcoming Tyranid invasion, I made a little research and found an option that has never occured to me before.

For just 32 points and a single Elite slot (I always have one left), I could buy myself an Inquisitor with two Mystics. This unit has one wonderful ability - if your enemy deep strikes a unit within 4D6 inches of them (so within 4-24 inches), the Inquisitor can pick one of your units with at least a single model within 12 inches of him and let it shoot at the deep-striker before he can do anything.

As a bonus, it also works on Daemons and Greater Daemons.

This option makes me a lot less worried about Trygons, Mawlocs, Ravenors, podding Zoanthropes, Gargoyles, Lictors and - what the heck - all other nasty deep-strikers such as Chaos Terminators, Tau Battlesuits, Drop Pods with pretty much anything and so on, since at the moment of their glorious appearance, they are going to get banged with 4 Missiles and a Plasma Cannon OR with bolters and plasmaguns of the babysitting Grey Hunters pack! As most of my friends use deep-strikers and I like the feeling of security and having my Long Fangs all happy and healthy, this seems to me as a steal.

I'm a little worried about the fluffy point of view, though. Wolves don't like the Inquisition. However, they had some good times with the Daemonhunters and even Ragnar fought side by side with an Inquisitor at least twice.

So... what do you think? Is it a good idea to take that 32 pts Elite unit? Is it too much of a sin against our we-hat-the-big-I fluff? Would that unit pay off most of the time?

That's an old trick used by Guard, but they usually used LR (tank, not our Primarch) to do the job, and placing the big pie is IMO better :). Be careful though, since it might be that the old retinue rule (mystics are Inq's retinue) will become obsolete when the joined Inquisition Codex will be out.

Well, it's 32 points and 3 quite cheap models, I'm perfectly willing to risk that :) And five small template could perhaps works just as fine.

In some games he will be useless atleast give the guy a retinue with something to fire at.

I thought it would be better to keep that unit cheap since there are much better things you can spend your points for and get much more killyness in return. However, could you suggest a proper retinue?

heavy weapon servitors, its add more wounds and some punch to the unit, also, take a psychic hood (unlimited range, stacks with runic weapon)

however, if you're just making it for the in game use, convert it up somehow, like a bondsman with psychic ability or something

i decided to dismiss it, but i would suggest a heavy bolter retinue. no plasma, because your servo will die and it's too expensive. about 3 heavy bolters is about right. and the model that blocks LOS would be nice to proteect certain units like long fangs :) from assualt.

thanks

But better to give him TDA and psycannon - no inv saves for demons. And I was not talking about pointswise but rather from the financial point of view :). And then probably Callidus or Vindicare, GK Grandmaster and here we go ;)

Thanks for all the advice but I don't really want a Daemonhunter army .) I'll let him be an old friend of the Wolf Lord who was mercifully allowed to accompany the Great Company on the hunt for whatever I'm going to fight.

I'm not really sure about that. A gun servitor with a heavy bolter costs 25 points which is the cost of a Long Fang with a Missile Launcher. That hardly seems appealing to me.

But I'm seriously going to consider giving the guy a psychic hood. I hate enemy psykers!

i know, i know, but it's a weapon specifically against daemons. I mean how many models are there that aren't daemons and have a normal save that isn't 4 or worse with an invulnerable save?

thanks

Callidus assasin. Some nids IIRC (at least in the old dex).

tons of eldar, ork with cybork body and no mega armour, they work exceptionaly well on the first

Nids? well you just answered the question of what to do with zoenthropes and the doom of malentai, 3+ invuls and 5+ armour, i need more psycannons

Well, You can only get any more by including GK terminators.

eldar i doubt, but the ork cybodies would. i meant with invulnerable saves as well. but if your that close to the nodz, your most likely dead. what's the range of the psycannon?

thanks

antique_nova

to memory its 18 range if fired on the move and 36 if you sit still, and seer councils die quick to psycannons, 3's to hit, 2's to wound, no saves allowed, its awesome

Seriously, please, stop threadjacking. I appreciate all your wisdom but I am not going to field GK Terminators nor I'm going to arm the Inquisitor with a Psycannon.

A reply to the question of the psychic powers would be much more welcome.

sorry, didnt mean to, cant help with the psychic powers though, i'd need to go find my codex to remember what they are

Yes, but in TDA it's 36" all the way.

My apologies, Vlk.

Powers were a bit crappy - not as crappy as IG powers thought. Holocaust was good, the rest - can't remember.
