So to set the scene Im playing about with a unit of 5 Thunder Wolf with Thunder Hammer, as yet they have been a little disapointing, LD8 isnt great and they are a big target, so what are people success with these big bad wolves? are they a competative unit? Competative enough for Tornements?

They add a higher level of planning needed. You cannot have a bunch of wolves in the open. But its good to have them as a threat. If your opponent is shooting at them he is scared of them. So have acouple threatning units and make them choose. To make them survive you need multiples.
present other juicy targets like Vindicators or land raiders.

its not the shooting that kills them, maybe i expect to much,

I use 2 Land raiders to give nice cover saves and distraction,

thats not to say I dont do well, with the games I have played I have come out the victor. maybe its just the dice but sure fire things and they flop. the worst so far is hitting a dreadnought, I lose 1 wolf to ID penatrate with the rending to imobilise and then the TH flops I lost combat and flee.

the best they did waskill a unit of Blood crushers and Lord on blood crusers although they all died leaving a prone Wolf Lord.

Maybe they are working buy alouing my army to do its job effectively.

am i expecting tomuch for them to go on a rampaging crusade?

I'd say it's about how you tool them up. If you're charging a dreadnought then you hould have at least one t-hammer or power fist in the unit and another with melta-bombs. While rending is a possibility if your lord has a frost blade then he'll be 6-7 attacks at S6 which also have a chance of penetrating

Aye, my wolf guar battle leader on thunderwolf with frost blade, storm shield and saga of the warrior born, always does the best out of my characters. He is affectionately known as the 'tactical squad killer' as this seems like the only target he wants to fight.

you'd have thought that after 24 attacks at 3's to hit, 2's to kill he'd manage to do them away...but no! the emperor was obviously with them as he realised my stead was really an eldar cat with a gretchin's pet's head glued to the front of it rather than a true wolf of Fenris

*Sigh*

Against the Tau last night my twc was rock solid. Canis was rubbish after I split him off, but that's to be expected I guess. I'm thinking about chopping off the WC's for a FB/SS set up and running him as my lord. I am however a fan of the WC's/FB over the TH simply because I5 can eat alot of things.

I'll let my TH TWC deal do his job vs dreads and the like. Maybe try changing up your load out.

If you want to have an invulnerable save, high strength weapons, and initiative, give the wolf lord a belt of russ, and two frostblades, as in the FAQ it clarified they stack the +1 str, which means he would be Str7, I5 power weapon attacks.
