Rob_Loken
Coffee all the way I say. Till it's a 70/30 ratio of blood/caffeine that's running through your veins. (I kid of course). I've come to the realisation that painting assault troops in batches is as boring as tank painting, but not as boring as drop pod painting. Which is why the drop pod is still unfinished and getting further back in the to do pile. Might buy a couple of attack bikes (well, three) over the weekend though for a bit of multi-melta punch. vahouth @ eventually I'll get round to freehanding all the symbols. They won't be great but if they're consistent I'll be happy.
Rob_Loken
Hi there, it's been a while since I posted anything in this thread, but I thought I'd show some progress on my Jump Pack Chaplain. Still going for that 2nd Ed aesthetic so red trims and such. Probably give him a golden bolt pistol and some fancy gubbins. http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae63/Astartes_Loken/PICT1801.jpg As you can see he's got a way to go but even slow progress is progress. :tu:
Demoulius
As you can see he's got a way to go but even slow progress is progress. cant argue with that -_- also ive been trying this coffee suggestion you made and it isent working...im awake alot more and brwosing the forums the majority of the time, but my models arent getting painted up it seems
BrotherMoses
I love your marines!!! I'm definitely going to start using the mechrite red as my basecoat. Did you freehand all the shoulders and knee emblems? Thats really cool. Knee emblems were something I left out because I just coudn't think of a good way to do them, especially on the knees w/o 'kneecaps'. I'm going to use your marines as a reference for my own. Also, what sealant do you use? Do you seal them?
AdeptusTerminautus
Okay question to BrotherDuncs, i bought mecharite red, and its more of a purple-red and its really thin, is this how all of the mecharite reds are or did i get a bad batch?? Because i really like your marines and wanna use them as inspiration.
vahouth
http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae63/Astartes_Loken/PICT1699.jpg That sergeant looks Fantastic! It reminds me of the old days... Also I really like the yellow of your RAS I think, I may go for something similar. Keep up the good work.
Rob_Loken
Cheers for the comments guys. Demoulius @ I can only apologise. Perhaps you've mastered the painting Red Thirst? Like some sort of painting Mephiston? BrotherMoses @ Any freehand on these guys with the exception of the Rhino is freehand, I just chose a simple geometric shape for the knee pads or a block of colour. As for sealent, I don't use any at the moment but I might invest in some hardcoat to make them a bit more durable. I used to use hairspray on my older models as a lacquer but looking at them now they are a bit to shiny. AdeptusTerminatus@ Have you shaken up the bottle? I know that sounds like a stupid question but Foundation Paints are constantly having to be mixed up to achieve their full potential. I found especially with Mech Red and Iyanden Darksun that the paint tends to seperate into it's different elements when not in use. So give it a shake and see how that goes. If it's not that then I would say it's possibly the paint and you got unlucky, nothing a trip to the store wouldn't solve. Hope that helps. Vel'Cona
Good to see you're back to work, Duncs. Been mimicking your technique a bit on my own stuff, as you know. Not a fan of yellows, though I'm feeling like black rims on the shoulder pads may be a better look that the flat red I've been using. I love the darker scheme, though. Definitely have to bring up the point that foundation paints settle out very quickly. They need a good shake before any painting session, especially if you'll be using them as mixing agents to get different color shades. I don't think you'll need to bother with lacquer/sealant on your stuff. It looks great with the nice matte finish; shiny generally ruins the effect of good highlighting, which you have (in spades). Maybe a flat sealant just to protect your detailing/freehand.
MasterOfDisaster
I actually have just recently started my blood angels back up as well (after the pdf came out, i decided to stop till a paperback dex was made) When i finish the details and highlighting on my brother marine, i shall slide a picture onto this topic. But here's what i did for mine. Step 1 Undercoat: Chaos Black Step 2 Basecoat: Mechrite Red (sprayed) Step 3 Drybrush: Blood Red (gives a nice ballance between dark and light) Step 4 Wash: Badab Black (in the armor joints) Step 5 Highlight: Blazing Orange

Rob_Loken
MasterofDisaster @ go for it mate always good to see other peoples BA. Vel'Cona @ Cheers I felt I should get a JP Chaplain as on the table top they're much better than the Termi Chaplain. I think I'll probably use him as Lemartes count-as. You're right about the Sealent/Laquer tho I may find a matt one like 'ard coat (or is it purity seal) because I'm finding the paint is chipping quite a bit on the Chaplain. Demoulius @ I'm the same at the moment just searching the forums for tid bits about April and such, plus nothings funnier than a forum. Nothing on tv? Go read the forums, comedy gold. Here's a pic of some of my work tonight. Given the crozius some attention and started the bolter. http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae63/Astartes_Loken/PICT1803.jpg edit - *posted the wrong picture  *

Rob_Loken
Yep know the feeling Demoulius. Damn computers. Finished up the Lemmy stand in today. Again nothing fancy about him, he's just a TT piece so I didn't go nuts on the detailing. Though next time I paint a chaplain they're going to have less parchment. I hate painting parchment. I really should change the title of this thread it's definitely gone past a test marine. :D So without further ado here is the ace of spades (worst pun ever) in the army : Lemmy! http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae63/Astartes_Loken/PICT1812.jpg

So when i make my next GW run, (which should be soon, i need more primer and spraygun propellant [and a few games]) it'll be ready!
Rob_Loken
I agree Devlan Mud can be the bees knees. Though I'm currently experimenting with using Leviathan Purple. Not so great on reds but very good in the recesses of anything yellow. Cheers for the comments maties, I have many paints that just dry out. Some I find are more prone to it than others, for example my Boltgun Metal has a horrible tendency to start drying out really quickly. But I've still got old Citadel paints from the 90's that are fine. I painted up two Assault Marines without Jump packs last night, bringing the squad up to seven in total. Three more and it'll justify the rhino (I hate taking a rhino with only 5 occupants, there's tons of room!) And made a start on Brother Leon from Space Hulk. He's done differently to Brother Omnio but I've decided I want to use them in games so I'm gonna get the painted up and based on 40mm bases so they get some use. http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae63/Astartes_Loken/PICT1815.jpg http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae63/Astartes_Loken/PICT1816.jpg http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae63/Astartes_Loken/PICT1817.jpg http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae63/Astartes_Loken/PICT1818.jpg

Rob_Loken
Wow cheers man. Praise indeed. I definitely feel that my army painting is improving. I'll be focusing on character painting when we see the new models I reckon. I just finished up Brother Leon sans base. Not sure whether to attempt a removal of his current "army man" base or use green stuff to smooth out a transition from base to base. http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae63/Astartes_Loken/PICT1820.jpg http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae63/Astartes_Loken/PICT1819.jpg http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae63/Astartes_Loken/PICT1821.jpg
MasterOfDisaster
I know!!! Seriously, he has the "Furious Charge" of the painting world :D (...but he must obviously pass his Ld checks as he finishes the models before starting a new one, unless he fails and gets Rage and has to immediately start on something else :) ) Man, a great phrase and i didnt' say it :/ lol He may have furious charge, but if he fails on the first round of combat, he gets twin linked rending power fists on his blood angels models Mwahaha, i have matched fire with more fire! now to put this out *slaps myself* Wow cheers man. Praise indeed. I definitely feel that my army painting is improving. I'll be focusing on character painting when we see the new models I reckon. I just finished up Brother Leon sans base. Captain_Thane
I already have 3 Assault Marine units and half an honour guard squared painted. Since the release of Space Hulk and my painting has got better, Im going to be redoing all my marines when the new kits come out and repainting them in the style of this brand new Venerable Dred, I've painted for my local store. http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=192321
BrotherTim
Wow there're some great looking models in this post...i used to play with just an all red army how ever i tried something different. I know a lot of people go with the black accents but i went the other way...white. I think it turned out really well, what do you think? I also used blazing orange to highlight and i don't think they turned out too "orange" Notice the Ork head on the base of the pf...My friends get a kick out of it :)

Rob_Loken
Some veryy nice models there BrotherTim, I like the white accents, like you say it gives them a unique look. I like the Ork head too, does your mate play Orks? Always good for a little bit of friendly antagonism. :D Captain_Thane - That Dreadnought is ace nice painting. I didn't realise quite how versatile that thing was. Oh well I guess the wallet will have to take another hit.
