World Serpents

Well, after flitting between 5 odd colour schemes (including one that looked like Father christmas in power armour) I've decided to get painting all my old and disused models. I'm not even getting a legal force out of this project, unlessI find some more boltguns, but I just want to get all the horribly painted miniatures from the start of my career whitewashed and given some coherency.

Now, the models are pretty badly clogged up with paint so i needed a scheme that used as little paint as possible to avoid having an army of colourful blutac blobs. As such I sprayed them white (easier said than done, damn you Halfords and GW for your pathetic white sprays ;) ) and then set about the paint scheme I had decided. A wash of Asurmen Blue, followed by a rough wash of thraka green to give the sea like colour and also a random consistency, and then details. Its quick, I like the outcome (much brighter than most of my other paint jons) and gives me time to do the things I love about painting, the little hand details. As such I picked quite a complex chapter symbol and paid special attention to markings. Anyway enough chit chat and life stories. On to the test model:

Some of you may recognise it from another thread, but I decided to move it here. Of all those pics I didn't take a single close up of the badge ;)

I painted up two more, only one of them doesn't have a backpack. I guess that can help some schemes, as you can get to the back of the torso, but its more a nuisance when your doing a wash scheme and its going to end up there anyway. And in addition, I've lost the picture. I'm doing well today!

Some work in progress

And the reason I need a minimal-paint scheme: 5 years of miniature abuse

I'm also writing up background for these guys, even if I'm not writing up an army list. Its only a start, but you can find it here.

And cheers Ferata for giving it a proper header!

Comments and crits welcome on all fronts.

Aye, Codex Space Marines. i'm not buying a new codex for what is essentially a way to clear old models.

Special characters will have the same basic shceme, but I'm going to apply more care to the little details. Specials... I have none floating around :tu: I've got a tactical squad, a devastator squad, one commander and perhaps another tacitcal squad or a command squad for the commander. I have some running marines but I've lost the jumpacks to the throes of time, so they may be 'aggresive' tactical marines. That would give me a legal list at least.

Oh and I just noticed the mould lines on that guy, and some of the other guys I've done. I am suitably ashamed, I tried to get them off, but I tend to miss stuff

Anyway, after just a few hours I've done those 5 men, and put the finishing touches on 3 others. Except for No-Pacs back pack. I'm thinking of doing a custom one, simply because the oppurtunity has arrisen.

First up, close up of the chapter badge. Probably the best one I've done, I don't have a very steady hand.

And group shot of the completed lot.

Finally someone else who has stuck to the traditional 'Father Christmas' version! down with Santa Clause! haha

I really like the ssheme, very worn look, much like I imagine power armour to be during a fight

well done

i love the looks of the armour, its dirty and gritty aswell as having a colour scheme thats simple and not to complecated, your doing great!

cant wait to see some more

Santa Claus is the American name. As a self respecting englishman (okay, teen) I say Father christmas.

Glad you all like them. Judging by the rate I done these guys, I should get done a squad a weekend, depending on how long spraying takes. I'm up converting the sergeant and force commander.

As am I a self respecting englishman/teen. I know that Santa Clause is american, but over the past few years the number of English who say Santa is frankly annoying me! This year in particular I was the only one in my college who said Father Christmas!

But back to the models, cant wait to see the commander and sergeant :)

well i dont hear it alot so its words like "candy" and "bum(homeless person)" and (@$$) rather than the varient with the R annoy me.

yeah i cant wait for the commander either, wondering whether you will go commander bling or keep with a more simple battle scheme. :)

Well you just had to be different didn't you.

It's pretty much all washes. Spray white, asurmen blue, thraka green. Trim, eagle, pouches and 'metal' are washed black. The hand detail is fortress grey trimmed skull white, although i actually paint skull white and fill fortress grey but hey.

The commander has been done with 'heavy' in mind. I've given him two very stalking shoulder pads and an old school back pack. I'll put pics up when he is white washed (probably tomorrow)

Well I said I would wait till I whitewashed them, but I thought I'd get some pics now so you can see what a mess they are before I paint them. Forgive me, I was only 11!

It's amazing how quick you can end up on the second page...

Anyway, got some more work done. Spent most of the day undercoating white (poor spray and a rather hectic day) but I managed to get some blue on them. The guy to the far left is the final bolter for the tactical squad, currently at the green stage. Then there's sarge, two lascannoners and the captain.

Enjoy!

Nice conversions. As always, impressed with your unique colour schemes.

I didn't know anyone was ever impressed with my schemes :)

Converting up some scouts out of the assualt marines, that way I will have a legal force I can play with. Also going to convert the few DA veterans I have hanging around into 'Swords of the Sea', a special unit which I will explain later. Basically, counts as vanguard veterans.

Well I've cut off the head, jump pack and arms. The head and arms have been replaced disembodied scout bits I have lurking around, and I've filed down the thigh armour and going to paint it as cloth, unless it needs some additional GS work. The backpacks have been exchanged with Catachan vox casters.

The concept of the swords of the sea is that the hierachs of the chapter select the most noble and bravest battle brothers, and induct them into the ranks of the swords. To prove they are worthy, they must travel from the chapter base at the top of the planet, and travel down to the rather dangerous seas of Jormungandr (if you want to know more read the background). To cross the sea they must construct a ship, using the skin of the Jormungandr coast seals as the sails. They must then pilot this alone to an island perilously close to the unpassable equator. Here they must slay a (insert monster here) and bring its head back to the chapter base. Once they have set out on this mission their identity must remain secret. Upon arriving on land they turn the sails in robes to hide thier identity, bound by sailing cord. They then present thier gift to the hierachs. They receive unique weapons and training, and are inducted into one of the chapters elite squads.

Chaplains also follow the same trial, although thier identity remains known. As such, most sword squads accompany chaplains rather than fight on thier own.

Why does this thread get buried so quickly?

Anyway, some WIP scouts. The fourth member broke so I'm still gluing the torso back on. The sarge's lightning claw is going to be a counts as power weapon. I just wanted him to have a lightning claw :)

I'm particularily proud of the raised sword guy, looks like he's really about to slash at someone. Some mould line hunting needed.

And the green stage of my commander and lot, done yesterday. Its been all converting today, no painting. Hence the heavy glue smell following me.

Decide to add a bit of 'shock factor'. My current World Serpents army. As it stands (or lies, due to lack of bases or disemodied limbs)

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr344/Captain_Mike_Parker/P1010043.jpg

Cue woman screaming 'what is he doing to those poor miniatures!'

you can see my attempt at paint stripping with nail varnish remover (worked quite well, but I think the paint protected the model cos I tried it on another one and had no model left). Assualt marines form when I started the hobby, my only red templar (thank Emprah) and some other dribs and drabs from my hall of shame.
