sgtNACHO
Hello everyone, the recent announcement of Blood angels coming out in April, my birthday month , has sparked my need to paint the boys in red. So as I was painting one of my models I decided to try out a few things. Such as, source lighting i think that's the word, burn/scar tissue, good eyes, and cloaks which I've never done with more than a single color (camo on my guardsman doesn't count) So here you are, the pictures!!! Oh, and please look away from the crappy highlights, I know they need work. http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01509.jpg http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01510.jpg http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01511.jpg http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01512.jpg http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01513.jpg http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01514.jpg http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01515.jpg I tried to get a good scar tissue picture if you need more I can make more. Also I've been working on a red I remember being in the tutorial section. and so far it has been looking pretty good to me. http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01516.jpg http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01517.jpg these pictures are a little dark, if I ever get the chance to take pics outside I will get better ones. C&C please oh mighty brothers of the Bolter and Chainsword! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/189916-trying-out-some-new-techniques/ Share on other sites
winterdyne
Lumpy! I think before you tackle OSL and skin glaze effects you should probably work on getting smooth basecoats on cleaned up miniatures. Otherwise whatever you do will look as rough as your prep work. Thin your paints a bit to get them to flow - you don't want to see lumps of paint - a streaky but not thick coat is fine - just apply more till it's smooth. If you have lumps, you'll never get rid of them. The same goes for those nasty mould lines. UltraRich
I agree with Winterdyne. Are you using the paint straight from the pot. I used to do this but now I give the pot a good shake and then take some of the paint to a pallet (a piece of plasticard or something) and add a touch of clean water using my brush. It wants to be thick enough to cover the surface without running to the joints but you shouldnt be able to see your brush strokes as raised lines. The other problem I had was that I was painting under a 100w lamp and it dried the paint on the mini before I could pull the paint out! sgtNACHO
Thanks for the comments guys. I do water my paints now, the thing was I had base-coated this model a while back but I never got past then, then I got into my IG and learned about watering and stuff and that helped alot. Also the Blazing Orange i got I don't think I watered down enough so its globby Also I did have to hit this guy with a dremel to remove some Templar iconography so a few places aren't silky smooth no matter how I paint. I'm working on a second model from the same Sword Brethren box which only had the white undercoat so I'll see if I can make this be more bedazzling. Also I didn't shave those ridiculous mold lines on that rocket dude because I mainly just wanted to see if the red recipe worked well and it does, so I'm pretty sure I'll shave them off soon. Thanks for the comments guys, I'm trying to just practice a few things while I get my BA skills reworked. If you want to some of my painting you can check out my guard in my sig Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/189916-trying-out-some-new-techniques/#findComment-2251271 Share on other sites
ThirtySixNights
have you tried using an airbrush? They are great for getting on base colours such as blood red. all you have to do after an undercoat of white and a airbrush of red is a wash to give the model depth.. AL.
Judging by the 'cloggyness' of the model i would defo say water your paint down (as others said). are you using GW paints? If you are watering them down (1:1 works for me) and your still getting a debatable result, you could always change to reaper or vallejo paints which i find 'flow' better, make sure you get a good base coat (i find rattle cans the easiest way of doing it) and think about what order to paint your layers in e.g. Base coat, main colour, flesh, gold etc. etc. as this will eliminate any overpainting of one area. I got very little help when i wanted to improve my painting so its great to have access to sites such as this one, use it. Also check out youtube, AGProductions, awesomepaintjob & BeastsOfWar all do great tutorials. It helps to see what people mean aswell. Hope this helps Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/189916-trying-out-some-new-techniques/#findComment-2251794 Share on other sites
sgtNACHO
Update! Alright I spent some time last night painting and I think the results look great. ThirtySixNights- its funny that you mention an airbrush, because I actually got the air compressor I needed to use my airbrush yesterday, I'll probably look up some airbrush tutorials and try 'er out. Alright down to buisness. The lumpy clogged guy got some blood red over his armor and some nicer highlights. He looks much better now, even If the pics can't show it. http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01529.jpg http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01528.jpg http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01527.jpg http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01526.jpg his right shoulder-pad and his gorget were hit by my dremel so I can't really paint over that. The next fellow was the white undercoat only guy. His shoulders are the only dremel damage. http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01525.jpg http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01524.jpg http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01523.jpg http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01522.jpg I used a white/grey mix for the white cloth shading, its alot less contrasting then on the original model. I'm planning on putting a nice big Blood Angels symbol on the large shoulderpad, either a big decal or a freehand attempt. Then we have the rocket guy, I shaved down the mould lines, but the lines were so separated I'd have to do some wierd voodoo stuff to make those disappear, the two halves don't quite line up. But I gave him a nice highlight that is kinda hard to notice and I like it like that. Also his eyes and chest eagle make me happy ;) http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01518.jpg http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01519.jpg http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01520.jpg http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr278/sgtNACHO/DSC01521.jpg C&C please, it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
