Turn One:

The Necrons got to pick the table quarter, and took the castle side. He also go to deploy first. On the castle's side, were 3 Necron warrior squads and behind the castle hid a Tomb Spider. The Destroyer Lord with this Wraiths were at the center of his force ready to zip through the battle field. The heavy destroyers and normal destroyers were on the other end of his force, ready to shoot down any foe in range.

My strategy:

My plan was to use the distraction force consisting of 15 Fenrisian wolves, and 5 Thunder wolves to go towards the left flank and tie up the enemy, forcing the Necrons to go after my main force. The drop pod would later land containing 5 Wolf Guard terminators to aid the Thunder wolves and Fenrisian wolves.

The Trap:

My main Space Wolf force would set up camp down the valley, waiting for the distraction force to do their job as they forced the enemy into my trap. I set up the two Grey Hunter packs on each side to protect the Long Fangs from his delivery squad consisting of Necron Wraiths and Destroyer Lord. The two Grey Hunters would close-in, setting the trap taking out the Destroyer Lord and wraiths. I knew my opponent would target my Long Fangs because of all the AP directed at him. I had enough range to slowly pick him off, so I decided to pull them back closer towards the hill protecting my pack from the range of his heavy destroyers and normal destroyers.

The drop pod landed, and got shot up really good. I was able to save my Wolf Guard from all the shooting, but as the turns went on I knew I was bound to fail a few. They did a good job of distracting my opponent as my Long Fangs slowly took out his destroyers and heavy destroyers, even a few of his wraiths. He killed one Long Fang and shot up my Fenrisian Wolves pretty good!

The Wolf Guard made it into combat, but it was the shooting that killed off the rest of Arjac's pack. He was the last man standing in that squad but took down allot of enemies in combat in the process. The Necron Lord and the wraiths stayed close by the warriors, for a counter attack against my Thunder wolves and Fen. Wolves.

By the end of all the shooting from the Necron's I had but 5 Fenrisian Wolves left and the 5 Thunder wolves. I had forced the Necron Lord to flee off the table because the 5 Fenrisian wolves and Thunder wolves decided to go after the remaining warriors the stood on each of his side, so I forced him to fall back off the table which was fluke because I wasn't even thinking about that. In my mind, I didn't want to get into combat with the Lord against my Thunder wolves and Fen Wolves because of his warscythe.

Long story short.... I was able to get 8 kill points over the Necrons, and he got 3 kill points from me. He was able to destroy my drop pod earlier on, and I ended up killing my last Thunder wolf with a plasma blast that scattered from a Long Fang in the end of Turn 4, killing a few of his warriors also. Only 5 Fen. Wolves made it to combat! but they made up for it in combat. The 5 man Wolf Guard pack slowed down 3 squads of Necrons warriors, got shot up about 40+ times, and saved. It was pretty scary seeing all those dice for shooting, but to wound was another story and fewer dice. I found it funny how my opponent had the one Tomb Spider hidden behind the castle, he was expecting Wolf Scouts to show up.

Anyway so pretty much the distraction force won the game for me! as I still had my main force sitting at a camp fire getting drunk telling sagas of the past while waiting to spring the trap. I got lucky and I thought it was funny at the same time that my distraction force won the day. The game ended in turn 4, the Necron player gave up as soon as the Destroyer Lord fled from the might of the Son's of Russ.

Comments & Thoughts:

It was the first time I've use Thunder wolves, and Fenrisian Wolves. I also rarely use Wolf Guard terminators, I never really used them back in 4th. The 5 man Thunder wolf cavalry, 15 Fenrisian Wolves and 5 Wolf Guard in the drop pod was a first for me. My normal list usually ALWAYS consist of Wolf Scouts and a Venerable Dreadnought.

Having one drop pod in an army is tough, so the purpose of that one drop pod was a kamekazi force to do as much damage as they can until they die, hopefully slowing down my enemy as best they can. It was scary placing it were I did, it was suicide but they had good armour to take the shooting.

The Fenrisian Wolves and Thunder wolves... well, all I can say about them are, I think its better to have the Thunder Wolves behind better armour, like Land Raiders or Rhino's for a good counter attack. The Fen. Wolves didn't really shield them that good as they got shot up. So maybe I could do the same for them. They were just an experiment I wanted to try out. I was surprise of the 5 that made it into combat as they held their own.

I really wanted Ragnar to get into combat with the Grey Hunters. Having a Wolf Guard terminator with a cyclone missile launcher attached to my Long Fangs was fun to use, it gave them more fire power. I think the storm shields on the Thunder wolves was a little to much, I could have used up those points for something else... I'll have to play around with it in the future, I just think storm shields on Thunder wolves is a bit much.

I've never lost to Necron's, in 4th and in 5th. The only army I have problems against with is daemon army. But for Necron's I always try to go after the heavy destroyers, and destroyers first along with his Lord as soon as I can. To me, their the major treat, the warriors can be easily avoided, but their firepower should never be under estimated. So as soon as I take out the treat in the army, their downfall follows when I get into close combat.

another VICTORY for the Son's of Russ!
