I've seen the Forge World land raider and I have an older, pre heresy rhino but I still can't quite tell the difference Any Help? Capt. Lysander
Their models are different, with the Pre-Heresy ones generally being less high-tech. However, after the loss of STCs, it is possible that their was higher-tech gear then there is today: i.e: the Space Marine jump packs. Hyperion
The fluff suggests that there was a gradual improvement in tech over the Great Crusade, as more STC templates were discovered by the space marine legions. The tech peaked around the end of the Heresy and there has been overall a gradual loss of tech since, with the Mechanicus jealously hoarding its knowledge. There have been occasional discoveries of further STC data since the Heresy, but not on the same scale. So current space marine vehicles are generally the version that was developed towards the end of the Heresy and during the Scouring. Having said that, due to the knowledge that has been lost, the more modern builds are simple copies made by adepts who don't really understand what they are doing (with some tech forgotten) and rely on ritual more than science, and may therefore be inferior to older builds. This also explains how some of the older tech (such as Sammael's jetbike) is better than the modern stuff, because it can't be made anymore. If you're looking for the actual differences between the models, then the FW Mk2b Land Raider has different exhausts, large side armour, a different top hatch and different front. The pre-heresy rhino has round side hatches, double armour panels on the front, different exhausts and a few other changes. wolf lord123
So if I were looking to make a normal tank look pre heresy, what would be the first thing that I would do? wizard12
buy a pre-hersy converstion kit? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/190013-ii-dont-quite-get-it/#findComment-2252226 Share on other sites
Capt. Lysander
Convert it using plasti-card/greenstuff. Basing it off images from FW and other websites may help. Pacific81
The other option is to get hold of RT era Rhinos. Although I'm normally the first to complain when it comes to the 'Pre-Heresy is just rogue trader stuff' attitude, looking at Collected Visions, a lot of the Pre-Heresy Rhinos look like the 1st edition version, and it seems to be a pretty common option amongst the PH armies I have seen. One of the main problems is scale, specifically the 26mm of RT vs. the 28mm of later editions, but there are several conversions around and about on the net where people have moved the doors and front paneling (the two most marked features) from the older Rhino onto a newer plastic kit. Lord_Caerolion
There is quite a large difference in the PH Land Raider, in that instead of having the two hatches on the side, one of which is a door, the other a gun, the PH has a large sponson covering both, with the front half being the lascannon, and sloping backwards from there, which is where the door is seperated.
